Miniature of the Fortnight #46: Cyclops
« on: 03 July 2018, 23:15:35 »
The Cyclops is another 'Mech that has been with us from the good old days of Technical Readout 3025.  It's another one of those 'Mechs that is out of production but tends to pop up just about anywhere, kind of like a bad penny (with an AC/20 or Gauss Rifle).  The 'Mech of the Week article is a good resource for learning more.

(Although, with a 'Mech like the Cyclops, I'm surprised we don't yet have a reference to Ulysses from the FWL.)

The Cyclops has had four sculpts:
  • The no longer available original sculpt (20-863).
  • The beginners set sculpt, based on the original sculpt (currently available in the Assault Lance Pack from IWM).
  • The resculpt (20-863).  I'm not sure how this differs from the original sculpt other than the arm positioning. (For some reason, going to the link for this mini on CSO returns an error.)
  • The plastic sculpt released by CGL in the modern intro box and the Command Lance Pack.  This appears to be based on the beginners set sculpt like many of the other modern plastic 'Mechs.

If you have any Cyclopses painted, please share them!  We'd love to see!

Thank you for reading and a special thank you to those of you who will post.

Our next three fortnights will be: (Dates are approximations)
  • Clan (7/16): Clan Wolf Sourcebook part 2: Linebacker and Naga
  • Special (7/30): Artillery vehicles (both Inner Sphere and Clan)
  • Inner Sphere (8/13): Warhammer

Ach, I just primed a beat up old 20-863 this week... now the question is... can I get it painted and posted within the fortnight?

Two old sculpts.
First one is a very old paintjob. As it resembled the Donegal Guards camo, it was placed in my Donegal Guards (later...). I have to admit i need to take some new photos as this miniature also features an adequate base in the meantime.
Second one was painted a lot later. This one was slated as command mech for my 4. Arkab Legion.
I think, the advances in painting skill are obvious...

Original sculpts on the top row. funny story about the one on the left, it was the only miniature to survive the 1991 Oakland hills fire from my collection at the time.  The second one is modified to represent the CP-10-Q missile version.

Second row are the resculpt versions.

Here are my two entries.  First one is the resculpt.  It was my first crack at arctic camo (haven't tried again since).  Second one is one of the AS plastic minis from my Illician Lancer battalion.

My Cyclops from 2002 with the eye of Sauron.
I like that.  It's a neat idea.

Here's my one painted Cyclops in what's supposed to be a forest camo pattern.

A command unit for the Capellan Hussar's Prefectorate Guard.

Box set plastic rebased on transparent hex.

Commentar:
Considering the Mech was supposed to have a command console at one point, I keep on thinking of modding one of these with a Dark Age Ghost cockpit glass.  Aside from the head, the rest of the Mech looks neat.  That goofy head just throws me.  Supposedly, these Mechs had been modified with ineffectual armor baffles for the head.  I take it that's what the funky helmet is supposed to be, and I can't help but wonder what it would look like without it, or if the original would have been drastically different.  Whaddayall think?  Would it've been more like a BattleMaster, or even Zeus?
