Request for Proposal: 260 powered Aerospace fighter.
« on: 17 December 2024, 22:14:59 »
Tech Level: Introtech as a baseline
Acceptable variation: Double Heat Sinks, XL version

Weight: could be anything in the ASF range that fits.

Fuel Tank: Minumum 5 ton fuel tank, more is better if it's possible.

Role: Dogfighter or Ground support, possible interception

May not Use: ER energy weapons, Ultra autocannons, Streak-anything or Artemis IV.

RFP does require the ability to mount a minimum 1 Alamo or other significant antishipping payload externally.

Sounds like a Lucifer variant to me.  I'll work one up after work tonight.  I'm envisioning a "brick" version with a Blazer Cannon, of course... ;)

Given my own personal dislike for the Lucifer, I started with the Stingray, made it five tons heavier, then redesigned the armament around a pair of PPCs (both mounted in the nose to make it easier to keep both on target) and some backup medium lasers. Making sure it's heat neutral on the two nose mounted PPCs meant four more tons of armor protection, which isn't exactly "brick" but it's competitive with what's in the field.

260 is a really *really* weird niche to force a fighter into.  The only factors are 20, and 65.  And with two 65 tonners on the block already that leaves...

I mean, it's fast!  And there's no reason why, with an engine that big, it can't physically lob an Alamo at a target.  But it doesn't meet the fuel requirement-so here's an XL version that does.

May not Use: ER energy weapons

So NOT happy about the inability to use ERLL which are super common.
I wanted to have way more Fuel/Armor.

The S22 is a blend of 15, 16, 20, & 16K/R models with a bit of it's own flavor as well.

It has the SFE of the S models combined w/ the 6/9 speed of the K line.
It uses DHS to compensate for boosting speed AND armor of the K & 20 line with only a slight decrease in long range firepower instead of completely removing it.

I just realized something.

The Blazer sucks in AS stats since a bay of LL is actually still better unlike mechs where headcaps are a thing.

Hellraiser remember that only dropships and jump/warships get bays. Small craft and fighters don't this thread is fighters so the blazer has some worth in that It can threshold 120 standard armor vs 100 for the PPC.

Valid point, I wasn't thinking.

Not many 120 point armor sides in Fighters but quite a lot of them in Dropships, useful for critting those.

I have a cheeky design.  Using a 52 ton fighter, we get the smallest fighter able to carry a 10 slot Alamo missile that also packs a 260 engine.  The design mounts 320 armor, mimicking the 'Immortal 32' that reinforced the Alamo.  Using a rear trio of small lasers, and paired trios of small lasers in each wing, plus the armor, the Kimble should be able to ride its Alamo to the target despite interception by enemy forces.  For long range intercepts, the design packs an LRM10 to ensure it can hit far away targets in the absence of ER weapons, while also not going into dangerous heat levels when alpha striking all lasers and the LRM10.

The design mounts no advanced tech, so no doubles or ER lasers.  With doubles, Ferro, ER lasers and other helm tech youd have a very different design, so this is an early era rugged design trying to squeeze that 260 engine for all the performance it can muster.

Can you have 1-ton increments in ASF?    I know you can in Vehicles but I thought Fighters/Mechs were only 5 ton Increments.

I suppose anything is possible with Fractional Accounting, and if there's ANY faction that lives and dies by FA, it's Kowloon... ;)

My basic proposal, the standard engine model. It will engage the enemy in distance by salvos of LRMs, then shoots the lasers if the enemy is close.

The front armor is enough to be withstand 12 damage point and the rear is able to withstand 10 points, so it won't be so easy to be melt into a mere metal scrap in a moment unless the enemy had a star of rifleman IICs, and even so this brick would draw some meaningful fire before finally fallen which is not a bad news for the rest of the wingmates.

An expensive XL engine variant, which is expected to be the dropship hunter. With good range and punch, the groups of this fighters can deal with the enemy dropships well. The only problem is its low ammo count but you better run the hit and run tactics against such a big target.

Puppy, those have both got to be the craziest variants of a Fighter that started out w/ Twin PPC & Quint-SRM ever, LOL.
I'm all for making room for armor but those are extreme.  Reminds me of the Triple-HPPC Thug only more extreme.
That said, I like the LRM5 swaps to boost range.

PS.  The OP said no ER so the 2nd model doesn't fit.

OOPPS!!!! I was only think about ER LASERS so I didn't noted the problem. Perhaps change it to the normal PPC or replace the missiles to LRM-15 or something would be better, then.

This also works as well, although it cuts down the armor greatly but it still provides proof against 10 points of damage on the front/sides, so it still have the better protection against most of high powered anti air guns.

And only for the high power long tom cannon does works as well, although it weights hefty 20 tons. Nonetheless it would be a good attack craft for CAS, however.

Perhaps something like this?

And yes, I am also wonder that is the first one really balanced since it have two barrels left and right, but perhaps the most of the one side with the medium PL have the other equipments to fill the gap and weight.... Anyway it is possible that the result looks somewhat weird and unbalanced.

I love LTACs, but that's not really enough ammo for aerospace combat.

It's mainly because of its hefty weight but in overall I'd keep its survivability over continual ammo feed, for its high powered shot means it's usually aim for long ranged shots and/or anti-dropship fight, so it needs to be get away as soon as possible anyways and need for rearmored. Still only five shots isn't so good, that I have to concur.

I think you could easily drop a DHS for another ton of ammo.  The LTAC outranges the PPC, after all.
