Anyway, would it works too? It' have good armor to soak some punishment. Perhaps it's not so powerful than a single manticore, but its amphibious nature as well as flexible MML-3s would allows it to adapt the battlefield better.

An alternative take, that reduces the armor in return to one more MML-3. Despite of reduced armor still survives from two hits of AC/20 no matter where it struck. Normally it's better to reduce the rear armor but its amphibious nature means I cannot cut down any non-turret armor for obvious reason.

A C3 Master version of just above, trying to make it less different in looks with its normal variant.

Maybe it's possible to cut even more armor and make it 61/41/41/48 on front/sides/rear/turret but is it good enough for only single more ton? With this small spare tonnage it's hard to add more weapons so perhaps keep the armor would be the better idea but what do you think? In such designs I cannot let the rear weak for all four non-turret locations are required to be keep safe in order to keep its amphibious ability or it sinks. Yes it's true that an ammunition explosion blows off the rear armor and ruin it anyways....

a lot of the differences in these designs showcase what people think an MBT is.  Some think it has to be 'The Biggest Baddestest thing out there!!", others think "Well, we got 'mechs so let's make some scout vehicles instead" or "I'm never going to try to fill a multipurpose role with a vehicle when I can have 'mechs, so let's make a purpose urban ambush unit!" while others actually read the assignment.

It has to fill the multiple roles a Main battle tank needs to fill, in the absence/shortage of proper 'mech forces.

That means needing to do jobs that in 3025, most states want to battlemechs for, in particular, most states want to use TROOPER battlemechs for-which is different from Assault Battlemechs (Sorry Lyrans!)

The core roles and assets an MBT needs to fill, in the RFP posted? well...you're going to lose some. It's a guarantee, there's no "Protagonist Immunity" involved here.  So the tank has to be adequate to do main combat damage, it needs to be cheap enough to be disposable/to have acceptable losses, flexible enough to fill many roles  (and modular enough that you can adjust the production line to create variants to fill specialist roles like artillery, recovery vehicle, or Combat Engineering track), fast enough to not need to be pre-staged at the defensive point when and where the Bandits/Pirates/Clan Wolf are about to arrive, mobile enough to actually get somewhere in a reasonable amount of time...

and heavy enough to actually FILL the Trooper role.

In tabletop terms, it needs to be able to play both defense, and Offense.

Because that's what is implied in the original RFP.

Basically, I'm going ot argue that you need to keep the Tanker's Holy Triangle in mind:

                 Firepower.

An MBT, ideally, needs to balance all three as close to balanced as possible, due to the variety of missions it can be expected to perform Adequately, not superbly, or with superiority, but Adequately.


Within the context of THIS setting, there's a 'fourth' leg: Reliability.  Because nothing says military superiority like having half your force deadlined with repair issues.

ask the Germans of the 1940s.  They made superior Assault vehicles, the only problem, was that said superior assault vehicles had issues getting out of the lager and staying functional...even in the absence of enemy forces.

There were TWO  MBT's that were reliable enough, hit hard enuough, and wre armored enough to fill the MBT role for most of that conflict-both were 'mediums' for a reason-they could MOVE fast enough to actually get into position in armored warfare without needing a tow.

Yes the T-34...and the Sherman.

Quick enough to get to a useful position, tough enough to actually hold and exploit that position, with enough firepower to kill enemy tanks that were NOT assault tanks. (and sometimes were.)

I agree with everything except reliability. Combat performance is far more important, because reliability is how we really make our money after producing the machine - those sweet sweet exclusive maintenance contracts off the battlefield.

More seriously, in my opinion, the most important trait of "offense" is actually survivability, for vehicles in BT. Going 10/15 isn't going to help against a fortress you can't backstab - conversely, going 2/3/2 with a weapon that can cross continents (hyperbole detectors go off now) means you can handle most problems and engage most threats - from fortresses to Savannah Masters. Battletech tank combat is not like world war 2 tank combat - fuel is not a concern for fusion engine'd tanks, and ammunition is exchangeable between weapons, friend and foe.

If the enemy wants to evade your slow mover, so much the better. Winning wars isn't about destroying armies, it's about going to where the enemy's cities, families, and infrastructure are. 2/3/2 can outmaneuver a city and is immune to motive crits (though of course not Engine Destroyed crits).

Main battle tanks are the centerpiece of the battle. If your enemy wants to decline the battle, that's their prerogative - they won't win the war by declining the fight; a more mobile force can win a battle by outmaneuvering a slower force - but like Hannibal in Italy, if you can't take a city / break a city, then you can win all the battles forever and still lose the war if the enemy goes to where you live and drops a 150 ton tank with jump jets on it.

On the debate of what constitutes a proper MBT I just want to say....

Nothing.

Okay, that's not true. I do want to say the wide variety of designs and discussion and differing interpretations of the challenge has been both cool and thematically appropriate, as the Vandenburg Pact in this setting functions very much as a cooperative effort rather than a centralized state. They don't have a central military authority to put out clear defined guidelines or even necessarily select a single definite winner, they have to operate via consensus.

(And if that gave you a cold chill just now, that means you're paying attention)
Good news is the lab boys say the symptoms of asbestos poisoning show an immediate latency of 44.6 years. So if you're thirty or over you're laughing. Worst case scenario you miss out on a few rounds of canasta, plus you've forwarded the cause of science by three centuries. I punch those numbers into my calculator, it makes a happy face.

It's no secret that the definition of MBT is not an axiom, so you will expect no cold chill either.

Anyway I don't think that a single vehicle would solves everything, but we all know that beggers can't be choosers and the resource to distribute to the facility is always limited, while focus on small numbers of models results great efficiency on maintenance and supply so they needs to have around 3 or less types anyways, apart some prototypes given by the manufacturers(if there are any of).

My vandenburg and your escudo both took the same cue for a 75 ton wheeled tank.  The plasma is a great weapon choice, I forgot about them but its a great multiple role weapon.

So I tried out that threatened ICE Omni. Getting the 16t pod space of the Jaguar was not happening; it would have meant going down to 8t of armor, which is just not enough for the role. Optimal 4/6 ICE movement would have meant a 60t machine and a heavy vehicle bay; not worth it, in my mind, but it would have allowed 10t of armor and a 16t pod space so that's an easy exercise to extend from the Jaguar. On the Lion, besides the obvious wonder of the Plasma Rifle, you end up losing organic artillery capability and the option for headcap weapons. Personally, I think that the extra million cbills is worth spending, but YMMV.

EDIT: Did the 60-tonner. Feels unsatisfactory.

...because the requirement suggests that the client needs for the heavier one. For the fast things they can bring some vedettes instead so why bothers? Rather the requrements says that they don't even had the manticore.

Also remember that the word MBT we know is where the meta largely lacks light tank, nor heavy tank. The MBT of our era in our world is the medium tank that is also expected to be the heavy tank as well. It's the ONLY tank they may think. The single type of tank we could think, almost 90%+ of tanks.

Anyway I am agreed on that the 'trooper' type is sufficient. Also it's the minimum requirement for the weight class. And no one would deny the fact that 4/6 would gives more tactical/strategical advanatage than slow 3/5 vehicles. That 16.66% difference in speed does matters, especially for the strategical maneuver. Also the speed is same as manticore too, and perhaps something toe in toe with a manticore is already enough. So I won't deny the fact that your idea of 70 tonner is still quite competitive and is also ideal as well.

To me, that's one of the reason why I consider artillery weapon for that, because it still supports nearby even if they are not there yet but, still it's not as good as a fully battle ready tank just beside of yours. However, as someone in Battletech universe dare enough to call a 100 tons brick tank with standard 3/5 speed for its weight as a MBT, I think that it's safe to say a 100 tons tank a MBT. :p Although they are far, farrrrrrr away from the pact. Perhaps the FS gives some hints for them instead of lyrans, huh?

Anyway, to OP, how the speed matters? Is the required MBT needs to fill the assault mech role as well, or it is actually expected to be vast majority of their armored unit assets? Just the multi-role would be already good enough(as the requirement it needs some degree of speed in this case, though) and the others are up to us and your taste and/or feeling on overall purpose on the each unit? The first requirement means it needs to fill the heavy mechs role at least but I think that manticore is too light to be a 'heavy' weight and it's more like the medium class - as the medium class is end at 55t and it's 60.

After all it's true that the slow speed hurts its offense capability, so if the multi-role is also the factor than at least it needs to be as fast as the manticore at least....

I actually made a Jade Falcon player storm out of the gamestore once doing it.

If you wanna be REALLY funny, and you just HAVE to have it be a slow crawling turret?  top it with an LRM or MML feeding semiguided.

I would've mentioned Artillery cannons but by the time those hit print, I was in one of those funks of "I don't want to play anything".

One of my favorite vehicles in the game is the Schiltron for this reason.

Self-spotting tagger with Arrow IV and ECM to boot. it has "light armor" (that nearly matches a Von Luckner bubble for bubble) but has TWO arrow IV launchers. Oh, and C3M if you need your friend's TAG to hit a closeby foe

Or maybe they can buy an army of them and make the Taurians pay for it, who knows. :P

(to be fair, you could probably submit a modified Schiltron for this very challenge; the only thing you'd have to do is find the weight to swap the XLFE to a SFE and probably change the size downward to a 2/3).

So I'm operating on the assumption that the group buying the tanks would value cost control and standardized parts. So I present the Guardian Main Battle tank. 60 tons to keep cost down. 3/5 rather than 4/6 for reasons of cost and tonnage. Both ICE and fusion models. 15.5 tons of standard armor. 80 front and turret 33 on sides 22 on rear. This means it can take an AC-20 from any angle but it is expected to control the facing to take advantage of it's armor. The Guardian is expected to be the firm rock which other faster lighter units can hide behind or pivot around to do their jobs.

Guardian ICE - The easier to produce budget option obviously uses and ICE.  Cheapest unit at a bit over a million C-Bills. Armed with an AC-10 and 5 tons of mixed shells. These are not the only designs possible the guardian in lore is designed with a roomy turret and extra wide turret ring. This means new turret loadouts can be pioneered and new turrets accepted. vehicular grenade launchers and if used chaff pods are simple bolt on so can be removed or added as desired.

Carrionwerks presents the Termite Multirole combat vehicle, perfect for burrowing holes in your opponents defences.  The Termite chassis is built around flexibility, with a top speed of over 80 km/h it offers excellent mobility comparable to the ever popular Vedette series.  The Termite, with it's 9 tons of FF armour, boasts almost twice the resilience of the aging Vedette. 

Comparisons have been made between the Termite and the Myrmidon and understandably so, the Termite is 10% lighter, allowing it to achieve the same speed with a 180 rated engine, designed for the clients established logistics chain and carries the same weight of armour (although the Termite's armour is of a more modern design).  The key drawback of the Termite is the lighter weapons payload but that has been turned into a feature by eschewing explosive ammunition in the A and B variant, significantly increasing crew survivability.  Minor quality of life upgrades in that the Terminate has limited Amphibious capabilities, giving it more confidence around bodies of water, and a trailer hitch for towing your Carrionwerks branded combat trailers or assisting less capable vehicles as they inevitably get stuck.

The Termite comes in multiple variants to make the best of it's 8 tons of weapons load while sharing a common chassis. 

The primary combat variant - the Termite A - rolls off the line with a Plasma Rifle and storage for 20 rounds of fire.  This excellent all round weapon will serves as a capable weapon against mechs, vehicles, infantry and battle armour at a medium range profile allowing it to perform confidently against any threat

The Termite B brings a pair of LPPCs to bring a little added range to the group and also boasts a 2T infantry compartment to allow supporting troops to ride into battle, a real boost to city fighting capabilities.

The Termite C is the engineering variant, bringing a dozer blade and MML-5 to clear minefields, deploy smoke, bombard fixed positions or generate defensive minefields, backing that up with a pair of ERML for defence.

Many things can be placed on the Termite chassis, from bridge layers and backhoes to flamers and EWAR and at a higher price point an Omni variant is available for rapid switching, but starting out on your Termite journey a lance of 2 Termite A, 1 Termite B and 1 Termite C is a great place to start for a mobile, flexible mainline combat unit, every vehicle guaranteed to fit in a light vehicle bay to ease planetary and interplanetary mobility.
