BattleTech Adventures Modules Canonicity
« on: 12 January 2025, 21:31:34 »
So, to be clear, just how canon are the BattleTech: Adventures publications? To get the obvious out of the way, of course there is no true canon outcome until if and when a future publication establishes one—which is unlikely in most cases. That being said, the following comment got me curious:
Additionally Battletech: Adventures units are not added to the MUL
Considering the MUL is meant to be (at least, as I understand it), the definitive source for all canon units—including many units mentioned only in passing, as background details in fiction, or sometimes even alternate brand names for the same unit—this blanket inclusion feels notable. It's a pretty glaring rule of exception for what is otherwise an astoundingly comprehensive list. Even the Swiftstar Mk. 20, which does exist on the MUL based on its description in Historical: Liberation of Terra I, chooses to omit its record sheet in Ghosts of Obeedah.

This all leads me to ask—are the context and facts laid down in Adventures publications canon? Is the existence of The Broken, or the fate of Obeedah canon as described? Or are they merely "what if" scenarios? Or, hell, just a big ol' writer's shrug until an established author comes forward with a really cool idea for a story that uses them?

Hi pokefan548. Now that I get the context, can you boil this down to one or two questions?

The root question is: what is the canonicity of the facts laid out in BattleTech Adventures publications for A Time of War and/or MechWarrior: Destiny? Are they explicitly canon or non-canon, or nebulous until referenced or contadicted by a future canon publication?

"The facts laid out" is in reference to the context, circumstances, and worldbuilding created for the publications in question—the existence of the Broken, the fate of Obeedah, et cetera.

It would be a per specific product, if anything. Unless there’s a specific product in mind, they’re all canon to my recollection. Ghosts of Obeedah for example is canon.

Got it, thanks. Out of curiosity, are you privy to why MUL policy has Adventures units not being added to the list?

Revisit that question when the new MUL is up.
