Nintendo Switch 2
« on: 16 January 2025, 10:38:13 »
Nintendo officially announced the Switch 2 earlier today; you can see the intro video on their official YouTube channels.

As with the original Switch, this device is a "hybrid" handheld/console system. Not much has been formally detailed about it thus far, though it is noted that many - if not quite all - physical and digital Switch games should run on the new platform.

A Nintendo Direct is to be posted to YouTube on the 4thEDIT: 2nd of April, with more in-depth info on what the Switch 2 has to offer.

EDIT: The 2nd of April actually, not the 4th.  I hope it'll be better than the Wii U from 2012

the wii u was less a failure of design than marketing (which was catastrophic in badness). i actually quite liked it.

it was getting to the point that third party products and leaks were going to completely reveal the specs of the switch 2 before nintendo said anything.

I fixed the Direct date in my opening post; apologies for not caching this when I first posted it...

One aspect I'll be curious to learn more of is whether or not the ZL and ZR buttons on the new controllers - or, indeed, those on a would-be new version of the Pro Controller - have analogue or digital triggers.

After getting used to the analogue "trigger" buttons on the Steam Deck OLED (when playing in handheld mode), and on the DualSense controller (to use when the Deck is in docked mode), it would seem like somewhat of a step backwards for Nintendo's new system to not have this feature.

That said, this would likely be more of an issue for certain third-party titles (such as driving games, perhaps?) that end up on multiple platforms; I would not expect this to be a problem for first-party Nintendo games made with the Switch 2 in mind.

I got into the Switch game rather late.  What does this mean for being able to get new games and controllers that will still work with a Switch 1?

cheers,

Gabe
So, now I'm imagining people boxing up Overlords for loading as cargo.  "Nope, totally not a DropShip.  Everyone knows you can't fit a DropShip in a WarShip!  It's...a ten thousand ton box of marshmallows!  Yeah.  For the Heavy Guards big annual smores party."
--Arkansas Warrior, on the possibility of carrying Dropships as cargo in Warship cargo bays.
