I had seen one about conviction, it did not include about the name being the server default.
arstechnica had that detail: https://arstechnica.com/security/2024/09/sailors-hid-an-unauthorized-starlink-on-the-deck-of-a-us-warship-and-lied-about-it/

I wonder, was that during an exercise, or just underway?  If the former, the sub crew deserves a **** load of beer for getting past the escorts to take hull shots.

Does anyone remember a movie starring Kelsey Grammer(Sp?) called "Down Periscope"?  I'm pretty sure that movie was at least inspired by actual USN exercises and incidents in the cold war past.

It's widely regarded as one of the most accurate US Navy movies ever made.

I do remember that movie... but I'm less sure about the "widely regarded" aspect...

I am sure China will have toasted for Mr Musk and hos internet services in their admiralty meetings.

Quite amazed the main culprit only got degraded one level instead of put in jail and licenced with dishonour.

I liked that movie. It was pretty good when it came to certain things. The jokes are all great, and after a while get stale.

Fun movie, and the sub it was filmed on,  the USS Pampanito, is a museum ship on Pier 10 in San Francisco, CA.  The tour focuses more on the ship's exploits during the war and very little mention of the movie is made.

Toured it at least twice and wouldn't mind visiting it again.

Of course a number of liberties were taken with the sets, as the aft Torpedo room and the galley were alot smaller than the movie suggested.  Lt. Lake's quarters and the Buckman scenes.

That assumes in the clutter of the Internet with its main composition being various stripes of bullshit, that the PLAN was even paying attention (and didn't have better, more accurate sources inside the Pentagon.)

THE major problem isn't the installation of a wireless hub on a Navy ship-it's that it was unauthorized, and intentionally concealed from the chain of command, and was as a result porous from a security standpoint.  The bigger issue to ME as a filthy damn civilian, is that the entire thing suggests problems within that boat's command structure, including major collapses of discipline and probably morale all up and down the chain.

aka the Captain of the boat needs to be facing an inquiry to find out how they managed to wind up with an entire NCO chain of responsibility that violated regulation, ethics, orders, and law-because that shit doesn't happen in a vacuum.

IOW, the commanding officer was clearly not in command of their subordinates, or paying attention to the ship or the crew.  THAT is a MAJOR problem throughout that chain of command.

Curious damage to the light cruiser USS St Louis after a hit from a torpedo has resulted int he bending of her bow, 5 July 1943.

honestly if you look where they put the line through you can kind of see the 'rip' in the bow.  IMO it looks like the torpedo might have barely hit the bow right at or depending on sea state "above" the normal waterline.  With the force of the blast being channeled along the easiest path- out front.

Explosives can be used to bend metal, you just have to channel the force to push the metal in the direction you want.

With that much deformation, I'm surprised they have any lines on those forward bitts (even if they're slack).

You can read more about CL-49 here. Hell of a career she had, and went down on her own accord rather than get murdered by the breakers, just like a stately old lady should.

It is telling of the era that at almost no point in any history I have seen does that damage get more than a sentence of explanation.
Thought I might get a rocket ride when I was a child.          We are the wild youth,                                And through villages of ether
But it was a lie, that I told myself                                          Chasing visions of our futures.                   Oh, my crucifixion comes
When I needed something good.                                         One day we'll reveal the truth,                    Will you sing my hallelujah?
At 17, I had a better dream; now I'm 33, and it isn't me.      That one will die before he gets there.       Will you tell me when it's done?
But I'd think of something better if I could

I suspect the bending was caused by the water if the ship was under way. The torpedo damaged the structural integrity of the hull which bent as it pushed through the water.

It's unfortunate,  but If it keeps up they may have go back to wah they used staff to military.   Which won't be to popular.  The country has to be defended.

That'd be the Draft. Unpopular is an understatement. Barring national emergency (and low enlistment numbers are NOT an emergency) it's not gonna happen.

Yeah.  IIRC there was talk about reinstating the draft in the late 90s and it turned out to be political suicide fro the ones who supported it.  If they want to boost the amount of people in the armed services, they're going to have to offer more enlistment incentives.

This is the FDNY fireboat John J. Harvey, she was launched in 1931, she had long career and was decommissioned in 1994 but saved from the scrapyard by volunteers who turned the boat into a museum.

On Sept 11, 2001, the boat was rushed back into service to pump water in lower Manhattan after the fire mains were damaged in attack. In 2018, the John J. Harvey was given a paint scheme inspired by dazzle camouflaged to mark the centennial of WWI.  Pretty neat looking!

I'm not a Navy guy, I see this: https://www.popularmechanics.com/military/navy-ships/a43646315/navy-decommissioning-uss-nimitz-uss-eisenhower/
and wonder "why"? They've literally got unlimited legs: just keep upgrading them until the hull is nigh worn thru from water friction?

on a side note: the Phillippine Navy has the former Sierra Madre (LCT?) aground on Second Thomas (Ayungin) Shoal. (to the annoyance of the PRC)

Other than as a museum ship or the scrap pile, I think giving the former USS John F Kennedy CV-67 to the Phillippines, so they can park it in the same area, for the same effect: would be a GREAT idea.. I'd consider it to be hilarious.

the nuclear reactors on the Nimitz class are hitting their end of life period. and the technology involved in the ship, including big stuff like structural design, propulsion, etc, have hit a point where it would cost more to refit them onto an older hull than it would cost to build an all new ship. some of the structural stuff literally can't be refit into an older ship without literally dismantling it entirely and rebuilding it.

and sadly because of the lingering radiation hazards from the reactor spaces, they can't really be retired as museum ships.

No one would wany to pay to yank the cores out of a nuclear powered vessel now. Heck, there appears to be not enough interest in the US pool money to purchase a recently retired vessel. I've been told that the Navy has blocking some museum ships that are newer in fear of stuff slipping in wrong hands.  I'm not sure about that.
