One of few Star League era Tripods, the Triffid is a heavy-end reconnaisance mech in a similar vein as the Phoenix Hawk. Intended to replace the aformentioned 'mech, the collapse of the Star League saw the original design becoming extinct by the 2nd succession war, with only downgraded -3Ds still present in the Inner Sphere.
Most of the original TFD-2Ds left with Kerensky in the Exodus Fleet. Many of those are still intact but stowed away in dry storage, as the Clans generally dislike the concept of a Battlemech with a second crewman whom they may have to share Glory with.
