Canopian Variants of the Succession Wars
« on: 26 March 2024, 09:36:11 »
There are two SW-era variants of common Mechs (the Shadow Hawk and the Stinger) that have been on my mind recently. Uncharacteristically for me, those are straight-up combat variants with no (ok, little) gear beyond introtech. As both Mechs are produced by Majesty Metals and Manufacturing throughout the Succession Wars, I've decided to fluff both variants as Canopian in origin.

So let's get to it! First up, the Shadow Hawk SHD-2MC. Build (or at least refitted) at the MMM factory on Dunianshire, the SHD-2MC attempts to draw on the Shadow Hawk's robust heat dissipation system to provide more concentrated fire power. The long range missile system is removed to upgrade the medium laser to a heavier model. In the years prior to the Andurien Secession War, MMM more often than not used Helion-a III laser imported from Andurien and usually seen on Stingray ASF.  This variant is intended to be more effective in combat against enemy Mechs, especially medium and heavy designs.  (It's also an homage to the huge laser on the unseen Shad)

Up next, a Stinger, of sorts. This one is inspired by Giovanni Blasini's Wasp NL and ideas about a potential Stinger NL, as well as the original fluff text of the Phoenix Hawk. Namely the part where the Pixie resulted from Orguss engineers realizing that they could just strengthen the Stinger's chassis to add another 25 (!) tons of mass...

Now what if desperate people at Majesty Minerals and Manufacturing sometime during the lull between the Second and Third Succession Wars decided to reproduce this feat, although at a more modest scale. Increasing the weight by 50% to 30 tons while keeping the 120-rated engine and original gyro or the Stinger slows down the Mech. But it frees up enough weight to copy the Phoenix Hawk's weapon suit and drastically improve the armor protection of the resulting 'Stinging Hawk'.

In the end, it is a modest Mech for a modest threat range. If you want something cheap with plenty of spare parts and a respectable firepower, this is for you. Something to garrison a periphery world, provide some heavy laser fire to a light lance or plug a hole in a heavier force. Don't expect any miracles. But treat it like you would a Panther and it will work.

Since the Shadow Hawk isn't getting to a 20-point roll anyway, it might be better off with an AC/2 and PPC combination... ;)
