Why not make it a Star League protectorate planet?

 20 March 3068
  New Avalon

Archon Prince Victor Steiner Davion had been looking over the operational plan's for the next set of targets of the AFFC's moves into the Free Worlds League. He had kept the pace extremely slow to give the fractious states within the Free Worlds League ample opportunity to make a wise choice instead of having to invade and fight over every world. Also by focusing on major manufacturing worlds, he was denying the WoB their war making ability.

He looked up as his secretary knocked on the door frame "Highness, a courier is here with a fax." Victor just waved her to send him in. When the courier had departed, he read the simple message:

To: Archon Prince Victor Steiner Davion
  From: Duke Scott Mitchell

Prince Victor, we have taken Detroit from the WoB. Several of the factory complex's sustained heavy damage. But this now has me at a disadvantage. What do I do with it now that I have it? If I leave it to itself, it is bound to either return to WoB control or be a major battle ground over control of it. The Taurian worlds were easy, once the threat was removed, return them to Taurian control.

Detroit is different, it belong to no one in particular. I need some guidance as soon as you can give it. Please.

  Scott

Victor had to admit he was not fully up to steam on Detroit or even it's true location. Calling up the relevant data was easy though. As he studied it's location and intel estimates, he knew his father would have claimed it in a nano second and dared anyone to try and take it from him. But he could not allow himself to do the same. Scott was right, this was a sticky situation. Might need to make a trip and see Katherine about this.

  30 March 3068
         Terra

As Archon Prince Victor Steiner Davion walked towards First Lord Katherine Steiner Davion's office, he had to think to himself, nice thing about being a House Lord, command circuits on demand. If not for the massive increase of Jumpship production, even this little trip would have caused major headaches for shipping companies and even the AFFC. Now, the Federated Commonwealth had several full time Command Circuits in operation at all times. Not to mention the 3-4 Star League funded Command Circuits.

As he was let in to see his sister, Victor saw she was with someone and as the elderly man turned Victor smiled broadly "Quintus, I had forgot you were still on Terra. It is good to see you. Making progress?"

"Highness, it is good to see you to, I was just bringing Katherine up to date. It has been a massive undertaking. Plus, I have learned a great many things about our good friends Comstar in the process. I should have let your father destroy them long ago. The things they let happen, the things they did. Evil incarnate in my opinion. But your not here for that." Quintus replied

"No, I have another problem but I think Katherine can help us out of it. Not sure how, not yet, because someone is going to get their nose bent out of shape over it no matter what we do." Victor stopped and looked at Katherine "Forgive my manners Katherine, it is good to see you again sister. Your looking radiant as always."

"Thank you Victor, your always forgiven. Now, what is this problem you have gotten yourself into?" Katherine said moving to the sofa in her office and taking a seat

"Not me, I am innocent this time, I swear. But seems Scott has gotten himself into a potential political nuclear bomb out in the periphery. His Task Force has taken Detroit from the Word of Blake, well 3 Regiments of the Sirian Lancers they swayed to their side. Now, he has no clue what to do with the place now that he has it. He is sure that if he leaves it as is, it will be retaken by the WoB or turn into a battleground from other states that would want it. No matter which way this goes, someone is going to be pissed probably." Victor said as he took a seat opposite her and Quintus swiveled his chair around

"Tell Scott to park a spare warship battle group over it and dare someone to come take it. Pretty sure he has one stashed somewhere." Quintus could not help but quip

"Let's not give him any idea's Quintus. Scott can be a tad hot headed if you remember. We have worked hard in making him think before he acts." Katherine said

"Please, as much as I enjoy our time together and the joke making, I think it best we try and come to some sort of help for Scott. He has asked for help in coming up with a solution. That alone is some serious progress. So let's bounce some idea's around." Victor said but silently thinking to himself before Scott does exactly that and starts some huge war out there.

you know it would make a nice little honey trap.... it would draw in all kinds of flies from pirates to small to medium sized WoB units that have lost their mothers (if they had one in the first place)  it would be a Roach motel  >:D   called Detroit.... yes my wife is from MI

If Detroit becomes a SLDF protected planet, not only can it act as a magnet to eliminate any bandits or WoB units.  It can act as a hub to network any nearby inhabited worlds and make the area to where any refugees seeking peace can settle outside of any house or periphery power.

Looking forward to the next update!

what I was thinking about was making an press release that it belongs to the SL and then let word "leak" that all of the fleet units had pulled out.  keep a good sized unit hidden in system and pop anyone unwanted quest.

He would be traveling to Graus in the next week to deal with protests against having any heavy military defenses on the planet. He was not sure yet how he was going to deal with this. Having no military of note stationed had not worked out too well during the Clan invasion. It irked him that he had to travel via commercial Jumpship, so he had slated 20 Billion C-Bills for 15 Royal Class Jumpships to be used inside the Protectorate from Mitchell Aerospace and Shipyards Demeter operation.

I think the best thing for Graus would be to just ensure their police force is well equipped and trained. Maybe a good SWAT team with battle armor available.

But the key is "on the planet" - park some Capitol-class space stations in orbit

For several hours Archon Prince Victor Steiner Davion, First Lord Katherine Steiner Davion and Quintus Allard had weighed the pro's and con's over who should take control of Detroit. So far, they had come up with nothing that would work in the long term. Every option they discussed seemed to lead to a war within 3-5 years over Detroit.

After breaking for dinner, they had just returned for another round of discussions when Commanding General Alexander Cocus knocked on the First Lord's office door causing everyone to pause and turn to look, it was quickly apparent that something dreadful had occurred. "What has happened General." Katherine asked

"We have a message from Alphard. The planet has been secured by Clan Wolf in Exile with assistance from Clan Nova Cat and SLDF forces. During the fighting, the Word of Blake detonated several nuclear weapons and possible neutron bombs in Nova Roma, the capitol of Alphard. Civilian death toll is estimated at 50 million plus, everyone in the capitol city was killed. We lost the 19th Striker Regiment in this incident." Commanding General Alexander Cocus said

Katherine was in shock at what she had just heard "They killed over 50 million people? What sort of people are these?"

Commanding General Alexander Cocus continued "Once we realized that the area was decently secured we re-extended out HPG relay ships into the region and the next message reports 3 former Marian systems have been hit with an extremely deadly and contagious Bio weapon. Stafford, Addhara and New Venice have been placed under quarantine by Admiral Jackson Daniels. Death tolls are currently unknown but believed to be in the millions already on each planet."

Quintus looked as though he would throw up at any second "Jesus, there will be a special place in hell reserved for members of the Word of Blake."

"General Cocus, why don't you join us. Maybe you will have an idea on a situation that has come up that we have not thought of yet. I will make an announcement tomorrow about the WoB actions." Katherine said

"We have been trying to come up with a solution for Detroit, which has been liberated from the WoB. Every option we have come up with seems to end in a major war inside of 5 years time." Victor said and then went on to explain each option in detail

After thinking the situation over for a few minutes, General Cocus finally said "Well, there is an option that none of you seemed to have tossed around, why not make Detroit a Star League Protectorate for say 10 years or such time as the people on Detroit decide to hold a vote on what THEY want to do?"

Victor, Katherine and Quintus just looked at each other and each silently thought to themselves "Now why didn't I think of that."

"The SLDF has 3 Divisions on Robsart along with a Pursuit Squadron, a Reconnaissance Squadron and a Transport Squadron. If the decision is made, they could be on station by the end of next month. But there is also another matter I need to discuss since I have everyone here. The SLDF also has 2 Divisions in the Lothian Palatinate. If you study a Star Map, you will see that Alphard is roughly 7 jumps from Gibson and the heart of the Free Worlds League. Archon Prince Davion, I have been tracking your Duke Mitchell's progress and by my calculations, his forces could be at Alphard in roughly 180 days if they cut thru the Magistracy of Canopus.

If I issue orders right now, I could have the Pursuit Squadron and a Division from Robsart link up with your Duke Mitchell's forces for the trip to Alphard. They could then literally rip right thru the middle of the Free Worlds League straight to Gibson and the surrounding worlds which also contain some of the Free Worlds Leagues major shipyards. Your AFFC forces currently have a long ways to go to get to Gibson. Take Gibson and we really put the Word of Blake in a bad position." Commanding General Alexander Cocus said

"But that would leave that entire force possibly cut off in the middle of the Free Worlds League. It could easily be a suicide run." Victor replied

"I calculate the odds as low on that happening. If they pull back forces from facing your AFFC troops to defend Gibson, your forces pursue them. If the First Lord releases my SLDF for action, I can put together 2 Armies in short order with warship escorts to further assist in a drive for Gibson and relief. We might be surprised at some reactions after the First Lord informs the Inner Sphere about what the WoB has done." General Cocus said

instead of trying to take the system why don't they just destroy the shipyards and factories and bombard any defensive positions on the ground as well as doing the same to the factories. in effect they are doing a more effective Doolittle raid.

First Lord Katherine Steiner Davion was standing in the Star League High Council chamber where numerous holo camera's were set up. This was going to be a live Inner Sphere wide broadcast. Even into area's using WoB controlled HPG stations, since they were still using the old Comstar standard coding. When the director pointed at her, she began.

"Fellow citizens of the Inner Sphere, I come bearing horrible news. On 7 February of this year, during fighting on Alphard in the former Marian Hegemony, Word of Blake forces detonated several nuclear and neutron devices destroying the planet's capitol Nova Roma. An estimated 50+ million people perished. Innocent civilians. To prove to mankind that they are the absolute worst since Stephan Amaris, Word of Blake forces also used a most evil and deadly biological weapon on the planets Stafford, Addhara and New Venice also in the former Marian Hegemony. This virus or biological weapon is so contagious and deadly that SLDF forces have been forced to declare an absolute blockade of all three systems.

To the Word of Blake and their supporters, before the SLDF was being used in a limited manner, now, after the multiple atrocities you have committed, you have forced me into a position that I would rather have avoided. But now I see that the Star League Defense Force must now be used in greater numbers. The Star League cannot stand aside and allow you to continue the use of weapons of mass destruction with a total disregard for civilian casualties. You have shown yourself to have nothing resembling human compassion, therefore you will be treated as such. You have but one chance to surrender, you have until 1 June of this year to surrender to the nearest SLDF or Star League members forces. After 1 June, expect the exact mercy you have shown others.

To the Free Worlds League, these are the monsters you have been harboring and supporting. I have consulted with Archon Prince Victor Steiner Davion and he has agreed to suspend offensive operations until 1 June of this year. I call upon the people and forces of the Free Worlds League to rise up and cast out the Word of Blake. You will not be alone, for we are coming for them. We do not wish to fight the people of the Free Worlds League, our fight is with the Word of Blake and those that support them. Let your voices be heard and we will listen.

I have also been informed that the world of Detroit has been liberated. I have declared that Detroit will be a Star League protectorate until such time as the people have a chance to vote on their future."

When the little green light turned to red, Katherine walked off the small stage and headed for the nearest bathroom for she felt sick to her stomach.

Back in First Lord Katherine's office, Archon Prince Victor Steiner Davion, Quintus Allard, Commanding General  Alexander Cocus and Commanding Admiral Alan Beresick were working on planning.

"How sure are we of the loyalty of the SLDF units?" Victor asked

General Cocus and Admiral Beresick exchanged looks and then both looked at Quintus Allard who spoke up "Highness, there will never be a sure thing. The SLDF is still 75% former Comstar. All the time we have spent reviewing and interviewing people, we have only scraped the surface with over 125,000 interviews conducted. We will just have to risk it."

"Okay, General Cocus, what do you plan to deploy?" Victor asked

Commanding General Cocus clicked the remote he held and a wall monitor displayed a listing of the various SLDF Armies.

Both deployed Divisions in the Lothario Palatinate are fully equipped with Tarawa LF Transports. I have already dispatched warning orders to all units." Commanding General Cocus briefed

Victor sat back and studied the wall display. He would have to send a fax to Scott, Victor would not order him to go for Gibson, but he doubted he could hold Scott back if he suggested it.

Bummed I missed so much while I was at work!

General Cocus has earned his pay for the year, and probably a couple of years after that!

All of those extra transports floating around are about to pay off!  Scott (or rather, the Boss) was truly visionary in seeing the eventual need for them...

There are another 30 Buford II Corvettes working in pairs scattered across the Inner Sphere conducting patrols along mainly Periphery borders of member states. A further 4 Falsane Yardships are positioned in strategic locations in support of the Star League command circuits but also where they can provide support to shipping in general. Most Armies have 4 Tarawa Transports assigned to them to provide them with strategic mobility."

Victor held up his hand "When did the Star League add Combine produced ships?"

"First Lord Katherine Steiner Davion in conjunction with Coordinator Theodore Kurita authorized the purchase out of the First Lord's emergency funds. It made since for ease of maintenance of shipping to use Combine built ships within the Combine itself." Admiral Beresick replied

"Well, if Katherine thought it was a good idea, I will not raise a fuss over it." Victor said

   Mackolla

Boss had just finalized his newest design. He had taken the Clan Cameron Battlecruiser that he "stole" the design specs for and had played with it. He enlarged the engine to give it some more speed, increased it's fuel tanks to 10,000 tons, added a bunch of AMS and point defenses to, increased it's fighter compliment, slotted in room for 75 Battle Armored Marines and maxed out it's armor and changed it to Lamellor Ferro-Carbide Armor which greatly increased it's armor. He used all Clan Tech on the ship too, he had just enough Harjel for 3 of the new Battlecruiser's. He needed to lay his hands on some more of that magic goo.

It was expensive at 22 Billion a copy, but he had run the numbers and they could produce these in exactly 11 months time. He had all 3 of the Battlecruisers slated to begin construction in the Shipyard's 29M, 30M and 31M recently vacated by the 3 new Farragut II Battleships. Sadly. only 2 of them were fully crewed and 1 had a skeleton crew aboard.

   Sudeten

Clan Wolf in Exile's large fleet had finally arrived in system and a literal flood of Dropships began making the journey to the planet's surface. While the huge Potemkin Transport Full Moon headed to place itself into orbit around Sudeten to facilitate the unloading of it's vast cargo bays full of material.

On the continent of Holcomb, Clan Wolf in Exile's granted enclave, the attitude towards Clan Wolf in Exile had slowly gotten better once Loremaster Daphne Vickers, in conjunction with Duke Jaime Wolf, began hiring large numbers of locals to assist in preparing for the convoy's arrival. Massive amounts of concrete were used setting up roads, laying out foundations for incoming Mech Bays, barracks, housing, plumbing, electrical lines, clearing ground for the incoming factories which promised even more jobs for the local's. On the continent of Jarho Islands, a joint Clan Wolf in Exile and Dragoon expedition were laying the groundwork for the joint training center.

Time estimates placed rebuilding the incoming factories to production at just over a year before they began production, 2 years before the Iron Wombs were fully back online and producing sibko's.

  Persistence

Russ Clark, manager of the Persistence Munitions complex was breathing a little easier, because over the last 8 months the 1st MDF Garrison Brigade had been steadily arriving on station and was now completely on the planet and had assumed control over security of the massive complex. Hitching rides via combined AFFC and Star League command circuits had made the trip fairly quick.

Russ had, upon getting word that they were on their way, hired a local construction company he had used in the expansion of his factory to work on permanent quarters for the incoming troops, complete with repair bays for their equipment, hangers and runways for the incoming Aerospace Fighter Wing. He wanted everything to be ready for the 1st MDF Garrison Brigade and he had completed 85% of the tasks that needed to be done before they arrived.

  Demeter

Aboard the Command Station of the massive Mitchell Aerospace and Shipyards complex, Luval was watching the last ships of the AFFC order being completed for their 5th Fleet. But what was surprising, the AFFC had just sent an order in for 10 of the little Survey ships. This was not a problem, but it was out of their normal purchasing. Luckily, he had the designs already loaded in his computer systems. It would only take 5 months to complete the order.

  New Avalon

Marshal of the Armies Morgan Hasek Davion was tired, between overseeing the expansion of the AFFC Navy, near constant crisis always cropping up and the almost monthly battles with Marshal Nondi Steiner, he was just tired. With the steady upgrading of AFFC units to Clan Spec, the AFFC was finding itself with a glut of near top of the line equipment. So, Morgan, with Archon Prince Victor Steiner Davion's blessing had found a use for all of that equipment. After checking around, he had found that he had roughly 4 RCT's worth of equipment on Bamburgh and another RCT worth on Crofton.

  He was re-activating several units:

10th Donegal Guards RCT - destroyed during the initial Clan Invasion (equip from Bamburgh)
12th Donegal Guards RCT - destroyed during the initial Clan Invasion (equip from Bamburgh)
33rd Avalon Hussars RCT - destroyed during the initial Clan Invasion (equip from Bamburgh)
41st Avalon Hussars RCT - destroyed during the initial Clan Invasion (equip from Bamburgh)
2nd New Ivaarsen Chasseurs - destroyed during the initial Clan Invasion (brand new equip)
8th Arcturan Guards RCT - destroyed during the initial Clan Invasion (equip from Crofton)
24th Arcturan Guards RCT - destroyed during initial Clan Invasion (brand new equip)
1st Lyran Regulars - destroyed during initial Clan Invasion (brand new equip from Bamburgh, enlarge to RCT)

Maybe giving Marshal Nondi Steiner's Lyran States Command 5 new commands to the Sun's State Command's 3 will get he to shut up.

Well.... i just cant wait for michell and company to figure out how to make drone fighters and assaulthships, will  help a LOT with the constant personell problem. And can store tons of them at each shipyard or other orbital facilities. And oooo boy will they be able to pump them out in crazy  numbers. He should also decide to keep them as a mitchel only thing to!

   Sudeten

Duke Jaime Wolf had received word that Duke Scott Mitchell was returning Clan Wolf in Exile's Liberator Cruiser and Cameron Battlecruiser recaptured at Mackolla. He had already forwarded that news to Loremaster Daphne Vickers, but the most surprising was Duke Mitchell's message informing him that he was also sending his Dragoons the Congress Frigate, Aegis Cruiser and Essex Destroyer captured at Sterope. The 3 ships from Sterope were already on their way to Demeter for repairs and extensive refits with caretaker crews aboard all 3 warships.

There was a non-stop fleet of shuttles and Dropships entering and leaving the planets atmosphere shuttling material from the Full Moon Potemkin Transport, Jade Wolf, Aegis Cruiser, Killing Blow, Vincent Corvette and Night Warrior, Carrack Transport to the planets surface. Word had also arrived that a large Clan Diamond Shark convoy would be stopping at Sudeten to deliver material to assist in upgrading and repairing the planets factories on their way to Twycross, they were 2 jumps away.

  Harris

Clan Ice Hellion forces under saKhan Conner Rood had taken possession of this planet abandoned by Clan Wolf as their staging area for the invasion of the Inner Sphere. Khan Asa Taney believed it would be a swift and victorious invasion with the Federated Commonwealth's attention directed on their war far from where the invasion would occur. Most of Clan Ice Hellion's Touman were assembled. Currently assembled:

  Beta Galaxy

200th Attack Cluster (Lithe Kill Keshik) - 4 Trinaries
  90th Striker Irregulars - 4 Trinaries
  121st Hellion Lancers - 4 Trinaries
  2 Flurry Clusters
  Chaos Sailor - Aegis Cruiser
  Pack Leader - York Destroyer

  Delta Galaxy

  2nd Assault Cavaliers - 4 Trinaries
  33rd Striker Irregulars - 4 Trinaries
  45th Striker Irregulars - 4 Trinaries
  53rd Striker Irregulars - 4 Trinaries
  1 Flurry Cluster
  Coterle - Potemkin Transport
  Taney - Aegis Cruiser

  Zeta Galaxy

  3rd Hector Cavaliers - 3 Trinaries
  7th Hector Cavaliers - 3 Trinaries
  45th Hector Cavaliers - 3 Trinaries
  150th Attack Cluster - 3 Trinaries
  2 Flurry Clusters
  Moore's Honor - Essex Destroyer
Cold Hunter - Lola III Destroyer

  Zeta Prime Galaxy

  52nd Hector Cavaliers - 3 Trinaries
  175th Attack Cluster - 3 Trinaries
  176th Attack Cluster - 2 Trinaries, 2 Flurry Trinaries
  1 Flurry Cluster
  Impaler - Lola III Destroyer
  Radiant - Lola III Destroyer

Khan Taney would be accompanied by Alpha Galaxy and Cages Pride, McKenna Battleship with their arrival at Harris mid July 3068. Theta Galaxy and 3 Fredesa Corvettes along with 3 Flurry Clusters would assist in guarding Clan Ica Hellion's Home World possessions.

  Bamburgh

Under heavy guard, 7 Steamer Dropships were heading to the Zenith Jump Point to link up with 2 MDF Odyssey Jumpships. Each Steamer Dropship was loaded with just over 20,000 tons of rare earth minerals with 4 going to Versailles and 3 going to Sudeten. Escort for this valuable cargo would be provided by the repaired Cameron Battlecruiser, repaired Liberator Cruiser and 2 Tortuga Destroyers. The 3 Steamer Dropships going to Sudeten had been ordered by Duke Scott Mitchell to accompany the design specs and any other material bound for Sudeten. Crews for the Cameron Battlecruiser and Liberator Cruiser had been drawn from one of the Farragut II Battleships much to Boss anguish. They would be ferried back via command circuit.

 18 May 3068
         Detroit

Duke Scott Mitchell watched the SLDF General walking across the tarmac to greet him. The SLDF 10th Army had arrived along with most of the SLDF's 1st Fleet. The 1st Transport Squadron carried the 302nd, 303rd and 304th SLDF Divisions. The 301st Division was still a month away along with the 1st Support Squadron.

When the SLDF General reached his location, she drew herself to attention and said "General Cynthia Byrd commander of the 10th SLDF Army. I presume you are Duke Scott Mitchell?"

Scott returned the salute "Not sure who should be saluting who General Byrd, but yes, I am Duke Scott Mitchell in command of this Task Force. Glad we got notified ahead of time of your arrival, because that emergence wave was massive."

"I bet it was, but judging by the size of your collection of ships, yours is probably just as massive. Anyway, my orders are to do one of two things. First, if you are not going to accept the idea of going to Alphard and then on to Gibson, my 10th Army is to garrison Detroit as a SLDF Protectorate. Two, if you are accepting the idea of hitting Gibson, me and the majority of the 10th Army along with the 1st Pursuit Squadron and 1st Transport Squadron will be accompanying your Task Force. My 301st Division, 1st Reconnaissance Squadron and 1st Support Squadron will garrison Detroit. Any idea yet which it will be?" General Byrd explained

"Not yet General. I have looked at the Star maps, and it is very tempting. With the SLDF's warships joining my own, we probably have the mass to take Gibson and surrounding systems and stay alive in the process. We are 6 months from Alphard if we left today." Duke Scott Mitchell said

"Well, I for one would love the chance to kick the crap out of the Word of Blake. My vote is we do it. There are 2 Divisions in the Lothario Palatinate that would be falling under my command which would give me 5 full Divisions. Pretty sure your Task Force could be considered an additional 4 Divisions. No way the Word of Blake have that many Divisions on Gibson. Even if they do, I am sure Admiral Jackson Daniels would love to apply a liberal dose of orbital love on any and every troop concentration they might have for us." General Byrd said

"You make a valid point General, but let's get off this hot tarmac and inside where I can gather my commanders and we all have a discussion about this." Duke Scott Mitchell said as he gestured towards several large buildings and started walking that way.

  Alphard

News of the virus outbreaks and subsequent blockades on Stafford, Addhara and New Venice had spread across the former Marian Hegemony/Clan Wolf in Exile worlds causing some panic on those worlds. On the Clan Nova Cat held worlds, where several million people before had wanted to migrate to the Tortuga Dominions, now there was a massive cry to migrate to those worlds.

On Alphard, home to over 3 billion people, there were now some protests about the lack of freedom of travel. In orbit, Admiral Jackson Daniels was awaiting orders from SLDF High Command on what to do next, same as General Winston and General Bradley. Everyone was awaiting Duke Scott Mitchell's decision.
