Title: San Diego Battletech
Post by: Valkerie on 26 September 2018, 23:49:42
New thread for us gentlemen.  Last one was getting a little long and maybe the new title will garner some more attention.

At any rate, I'm busy for October sadly, so I'm looking at the first two weekends in November for the next game.  My stepson was quite bummed he missed this last one, so he's making a commitment to make this one.

Any thoughts on a scenario for our next meeting?  This last one was Dark Age era, so I would be up for a different era this go round.  My two votes would be for either Fourth Succession War or Civil War time, but as always, I'm open for other ideas.  It's all about having a good game first and foremost.

And I would like to keep it at Game Empire.  Having all those buildings and terrain there make things much easier. ;)

New thread!  :D

Well, I'm not sure what exactly to do for a scenario or a timeline. Civil War could be neat.

I do have a Clan Wolf Mech Trinary I'm working on.  Beta Galaxy colors.  Does that stir any ideas?  We haven't thrown any Clan Mechs out on the table yet.

Lyran lapdogs, or true Wolves?  >:D

True Wolves all the way.  They are a Clan Invasion trinary and were built to stomp on anyone who gets in the way. :D

And they have the Dire Wolf to back that up... ^-^

SLDF vs Rim World's could also be fun.

Hey, I like that.  And I've got units I can throw at that.  And I just started reading Reunification War, so that would tie in nicely.

Got a battle or scenario in mind?

Hi. I just saw this post I'm in San Diego and would like to play if possible. I've only played 2 AS games but have been playing Boardtop since the 90's. My wife might want to play as well if you don't mind another beginner.

You are both most welcome to join us!  We've been playing at Game Empire roughly one Sunday a month.  Next game isn't set yet, but we're looking at one of the first two Sunday's in November.  Try and get one in before the holidays hit.

And we are by no means Alpha Strike masters.  We're still learning as well. :)

Sounds like we're leaning towards SLDF vs. Rim World's for the next game.

Howdy all.  So dates that we're looking at are either November 4th or November 11th.  After that, I might have one weekend in December free, but I'm not holding my breath at this point.

Sounds like SLDF vs. Rim Worlds is ok with everyone.  Any thoughts as to when it takes place?  That will influence what units will be available.

I can do 11th but can't do the 4th. I have work on the 4th. If its Rim Worlds I say Age of War 2573ish. My thoughts anyway...
Title: Re: San Diego Alpha Strike Association
Post by: koalabirb on 03 October 2018, 00:49:32
I'm not opposed to pulling something from the Invasion of Terra.

I haven't had the opportunity to read too deeply into that book yet. The tech and timeline is the far opposite as the stuff I know well.  :))
Title: Re: San Diego Alpha Strike Association
Post by: Valkerie on 03 October 2018, 23:02:44
I'm good with either.  2573 is right about the start of the Reunification War wasn't it?  We could start there, and work our way forward through the timeline with the next few matches for bit.  This one starts it off, next one is around the liberation of Terra, then First Succession War, and so on (or something like that.)  Might be fun to stroll through the earlier eras.

Any thoughts or opinions on force size?  And which side would folks like to be on?  I don't have a preference, so I'm happy playing on either side.

Title: Re: San Diego Alpha Strike Association
Post by: JamesPryde on 03 October 2018, 23:55:13
I good with playing either. If nobody chooses I would play SLDF. I'm familar with tier tactics. I know very little about the Rim Worlds Republic. Though I have no problem reading up on them if I'm going to play as them. I have the PDF for age of war if that helps. I checked the timeline and most of the "fancy" Star League era stuff is in development. Double heat sink have been perfected. But should be very rare still. I know the SLDF did battalions of the same mech. So though a bit repetitive they sould be easy to set up. I'll see what else i can dig up.  >:D
Title: Re: San Diego Alpha Strike Association
Post by: Valkerie on 04 October 2018, 08:49:06
Yeah I skimmed timelines and intro dates on the MUL last night as well.  Not a lot of flashy tech quite yet.  Some of the classic 3025 mechs are available, some aren't (no Battlemaster yet).  I say we set this during the Rim Worlds campaign of the Reunification War.  That should lend itself to a good SLDF vs. Rim Worlds showdown in that time period.  How's that sound?

And after reading a bit more, I'll throw my hat in on the Rim Worlds side.  It'll be fun playing the underdog. 8)
Title: Re: San Diego Alpha Strike Association

Sounds good. I don't think I have the reunification ears book but I'll check.
Title: Re: San Diego Alpha Strike Association
Post by: Valkerie on 05 October 2018, 22:50:05
I have Historical: Reunification War, so if anyone wants to know what is on the RATs, I'm happy to oblige.

If we want to give this match some historical flavor, the Rim Worlds raided the planet Alarion in the Lyran Commonwealth in 2581.  Gave the LCAF and the SLDF a surprising bloody nose.  It was a mostly mech battle, so that would work nicely for anyone who hasn't played Alpha Strike much, or who has.  That would also lend itself to multiple scenario options.  For instance, the Rim Worlds did have to fight a running battle back to their dropships, but that was after a very successful attack.  What type of scenario do you guys feel like playing out this round?

Since we could end up with as many as six players, I would suggest one company for each side.  Mechs and combat vehicles will be it for this run (sorry koalabirb, no battle armor available yet  :( ).  500 PV  for each side should be good as well.  That will leave plenty of PV for unit and skill choices.
Title: Re: San Diego Alpha Strike Association
Post by: JamesPryde on 06 October 2018, 08:09:21
Sounds good to me. Are the units going to be rolled or are the players chooseing them?
Title: Re: San Diego Alpha Strike Association
Post by: Valkerie on 06 October 2018, 11:08:29
We've always chosen so far.  If you want to start toying around with SLDF lineups, please do so.  I can start messing around with the Rim Worlds.  We've got plenty of time to get the two teams ironed out.  If anyone has suggestions for units or lance combos for either side, shout them out.  I'm all ears.
Title: Re: San Diego Alpha Strike Association
Post by: worktroll on 07 October 2018, 03:46:07
Provided you're OK on point balances, the SDLF players could use single-model companies. A company of Locusts, a company of Griffins, and a company of Archers. It's very SLDF. Or maybe, for more fun, use lances of the same type.

Rim worlders, you just want to make the world burn. Flamer city!

The MUL is, as always, your friend.

That makes two for the Rim Worlds.  My stepson is fine playing either side.  Giovanni, any preference for you sir?
Title: Re: San Diego Alpha Strike Association
Post by: Giovanni Blasini on 09 October 2018, 01:50:30
SLDF all the way. I should hopefully be able to hit storage this weekend and see if I can put together the minis for a full company of 55-tonners (mostly Shadow Hawks with Griffin support, and maybe a command Wolverine).
Title: Re: San Diego Alpha Strike Association
Post by: Valkerie on 09 October 2018, 22:43:43
All right then.  Let's call the teams this way then:

Rim Worlds: Valkerie (+stepson) and koalabirb
SLDF: Giovanni Blasini and JamesPryde (+spouse)

Any preferences for scenario type?  Stand up fight, breakthrough, objective based, what would you guys like to play?

Keeping with the era, my personal interest is either in an objective type, or a running fight scenario.

I saw a pretty cool warehouse terrain piece when I was over at the shop last, we could use that. Rim Worlds need to capture the warehouse in X turns, or destroy it. Destroying it is worth like...a quarter of the points.

Just my off-the-top.
Title: Re: San Diego Alpha Strike Association

Proxies are perfectly fine.  I always strive to have the mini, but that just isn't always realistic. ;)

Hey, that would fall in line with the whole Alarion raid idea.  I can write up a scenario with that as a basis.  Any other objective/bonus ideas for either side?  I would add an extra building/depot for the Rim Worlds to take out as a bonus option.  Or stick with the one objective, but give bonus points for getting back out with 'X' amount of units surviving.  Something similar for the SLDF, but in the reverse of course.
Title: Re: San Diego Alpha Strike Association
Post by: JamesPryde on 15 October 2018, 15:40:40
Well for a follow-up scenario. If Rim Worlds captures we can do a swap and Rim has to defend the convoy on its way outto the Dropship. If they fail or blow up the warehouse then I say a reprisal attack from the SLDF. Would be in order. That way both sides play offence and defense. Just a thought. I never liked single scenarios. People then have no care for self preservation and will fight in a state anyone would withdraw in that condition.
Title: Re: San Diego Alpha Strike Association
Post by: Valkerie on 15 October 2018, 22:36:13
I think that is a great idea.  I agree with you that stand alone scenarios don't lend themselves much to self preservation.  That'll be fun to have a follow up.  I'll try and put something together before the week is over.
Title: Re: San Diego Alpha Strike Association
Post by: JamesPryde on 19 October 2018, 07:43:28
So to improve the desire for self preservation maybe the 2nd scenario you get to add 25% or 50% of the points remaining at the end of the 1st scenario. Basically they both got reinforcements so to speak. Plays into the succession wars wipeing out all the resources by just repeatedly fighting till one side had nothing. Or use the points on support like tanks VTOLs arty infantry etc...not sure if everyone does combined arms or not.  Just some thoughts.
Title: Re: San Diego Alpha Strike Association
Post by: Valkerie on 19 October 2018, 10:21:46
I was thinking something similar, borrowing from the Chaos system a bit.  Each side has a total force size of 'x', and then able to deploy a percentage of that force in each scenario.  I was also thinking no salvage between scenarios, but surviving damaged units would be repaired between scenarios.  I would reccomend upping the force size for both sides to a reinforced company, but still keep the PV at 500.  Thoughts?
Title: Re: San Diego Alpha Strike Association

I like the square company idea, I may be tight on models that fit the era though. Good idea though.

Post by: Valkerie on 19 October 2018, 20:30:55
Ah, I'm not worried.  A regular Archer or Orion can easily stand in for their more primitive versions.  And my Mad Cats kind of look like a Talos... ;)
Title: Re: San Diego Alpha Strike Association
Post by: JamesPryde on 19 October 2018, 21:45:55
Actually I'm looking and there are alot of options for that time period. Also are we just useing cannon mechs or will the RWR use customs? I figure SLDF are SOL on customs as they do homogenous units. I did some testing on Solaris Skunk Werks and it will generate AS cards.

Hmm, I'd be curious to know if Skunk Werks has the new point value update.  The MUL does now.

As for customs, I hadn't planned on it.  At least for me, there is usually enough canon material to satisfy my needs.  But if other folks want to, I have no objections.  As long as they aren't equipped with Ludicrous Speed or something to that effect. :P

Good day all.  Hope everyone had a good weekend.  I've got the rough draft for the first scenario attached.  I feel like it is still missing something a little, so if anyone has ideas, please throw them out there.

I'd also like to know what you would rather see as follow up to this one, a running fight with the RWA having to protect a cargo convoy of their ill-gotten goods, or the SLDF paying a return visit to the RWA units home base.  In either case, the scenario would use the surviving units from the first one.  Or if you have a totally different idea, share it as well.  As always, the goal is for a good game.

Title: Re: San Diego Alpha Strike Association

I think the 2nd senario (which is the one I can make it to) should be based on the result of the first. If RWA takes the objective they have to hold it. If they bolw it up then they run... If they fail well the SLDF has the resources to punish those who poke the bear so to speak...actions like attacking someone usually ends with a reprisal attack...

SSW’s AS calculations have other calculation errors as well. And that was before errata that made it out of date (like the introduction of 0*).

That all sounds excellent to me.  I'll do a little rewrite to the first scenario with all this in mind.  Though I'm a little confused.  Are you unable to do November 11th now, or am I misreading that?  That was the date for the first scenario to be played.  No date for part two yet.

Good morning all.  Did a little rewriting on the scenario.  Should be good to go now, and it sets the conditions for the second scenario depending on the outcome of first one.

So November 11th at Game Empire.  Figure we'll do the usual and start between 12:30 and 1:00 unless anyone needs that adjusted a bit.  Looking forward to a good game everyone!

Date: Sunday, November 11
Location:  Game Empire, 5037 Shawline St, San Diego, CA 92111
Time: Some time between 12:30 and 1

I'll be there a little after 12 to claim a table and start setting up.  Safe travels all!

Gentlemen, thanks for the game yesterday.  It was a blast!

Attached are the remaining forces for each side after the battle.  All remaining units will be able to be deployed in the next scenario.  The weekend of December 15 is looking like the likely candidate for me, but that could still be iffy.  I'll know better once I have the schedule for work done.

This next one will play like the 'Hold the Line' scenario that is on page 164 of the AS Companion.  I think victory conditions should be point based for this one.  Points awarded for completed objectives, kills, and some bonus points for special conditions met.  And would you guys be up for what would be urban combat?  I'm seeing the map laid out with buildings and machinery across the whole thing to represent the space port.  Any other thoughts or ideas?

Thanks again guys and looking forward to the next one. 8)

Good afternoon gentlemen.  My wife's surgery went down on Thursday and everything came out great.  Doc said it couldn't have gone any better.  We were able to come home on the same day.  She's recovering nicely now.  Still sore and tender of course, but she should start feeling normal again in about a month here.

On that note, I find myself off for the next week with more free time than I expected.  Looking past our next game, what would you guys be up for?  Another mini-campaign, or something a little longer?  I could start putting together the skeleton of something this week and get a jump on it.

Something to mull on, what would you guys like to see from an Alpha Strike campaign?  What's long enough, but not too long?  What era would you prefer?  How difficult would you like the scenarios?  I would love all your thoughts on this.  I've run D&D campaigns back in the day, but never a BattleTech campaign (of any type).  Thanks guys!

I am the type to play a single campaign for literally years. So I can go with the flow, personally. lol, I enjoy a challenge, but I don't like being "GMs Wrathed" into oblivion because the campaign is swinging in the players' favor. "Your reinforcements miss-jumped, too bad..." has happened once or twice in the same game year.

I'll be alright for the second week of January, any day of the week barring that Tuesday.
Work schedule went official today.  I'm off every Friday and Saturday for the next five weeks.

Few things to consider.  Game Empire was considerably busier on Saturday vs Sunday.  I have no idea what they look like on Fridays.  I'm OK with starting earlier on Saturdays if everyone else is.  I would rather avoid playing during the day on Fridays as traffic just plain sucks around here anymore on weekdays.  Don't suppose if anyone knows if you can reserve tables with GE?  I'm also OK with hosting games up here at Pair of Dice or my humble abode, but I know that is a long drive for everyone else.

First and foremost, I will never intentionally "GM Wrath" someone.  My vision for an Alpha Strike campaign, for the players, is something that does present a challenge, but can be overcome with planning and good decision making.  However, this is Battletech, so we all have to be prepared for the dice doing some crazy ass BS now and again.  And as a first run Alpha Strike campaign, I'm thinking probably something along the lines of planetary conquest or defense.  If all goes well, perhaps then spinning the involved units off into something bigger.

Having player units disappear due to a mis-jump? Twice?!  That's some pretty petty BS is you ask me.  Did the GM get beaten?

A Friday would be good for me. As for location, I'm good for pretty much anywhere. I don't think you can reserve tables anymore. I know you could a while ago.

I prefer earlier starts, as a rule.

Haha, no they didn't get a machine-gun beating. However, it was certainly a sour moment. Dice just didn't go their way and got wrecked in a big way-way faster than expected.

Fridays I generally don't get out of the office before 6. Sometimes, before 7.

Well, James doesn't come back until the 10th, so how would Saturday, January 19th sound?  I'm willing to run down early to Game Empire and jump on a table when they open.  Other options could be Sunday evening (I can be there after work, so around 6:30), or Friday during the day.  Their calendar looks pretty busy Friday evenings.

I should be good for the 19th. Sunday is a no-go for me. I've got an event with the wife that evening in Anaheim. Friday is also doable.

Sounds good.  As far as time goes, I'm leaning on the earlier side.  They were super busy at 12:30 when I got there on that last Saturday.  Is everyone cool with an 11:00 start?  I'll get there before that and stake a table claim.

Anyone need a refresh on where we left off?

You would be correct on that point.  All things being equal we would have been done by 2:00 most likely.  But we actually got blown out of there by a Magic release.  Couldn't even set up shop they were so busy.  We tried going up to At Ease games, but that was the same story.  So we actually ended up at my house, but we were still done by 3:30.

Plans for an Alpha Strike campaign are in the works, something at the start of the Jihad, so stay posted.  Sorry we missed you. :-\

Yeah, that was a thing.  They still were at it at 3 PM, along with a couple D&D tables.  It was a total madhouse of people in there.

Excellent.  There is always room at the table for more players.  The gist of the campaign is mercenary forces hired by the Isle of Skye to go wreck havoc over in the Free Worlds League.  Players are the merc forces.  I'll be running the on planet defenses that consist of local militia conventional armor, a reinforced company from the 1st Marik Militia, and an unknown mercenary group.  As you haven't had the chance to play Alpha Strike yet, you are welcome to partner up with me for the next round and get a feel for it.  We can get you worked in with your own force after that if you like the style of play.

And as for the next meeting, looks I'm free from work all the Saturdays again.  I am playing golf on the 3rd, but other than that I'm free.  I'll be sure to call ahead to the shop this time and make sure there isn't an event planned again.

Not yet.  I would personally like to avoid the aerospace rules if at all possible (they make my head hurt  :bang: ), but I don't know how the air-mech mode would work.  If they operate like VTOLs, then it's not a big deal.  I do like the idea.  Definitely a cool image. 8)  Let me do some research on this one.

WiGE movement rules in AirMech mode, per the AS Unit of the Week: Wasp LAM article:

https://bg.battletech.com/forums/index.php/topic,48321.0.html

Edit: If WiGE proves to be a bit much to handle, for extra amusement, and depending on point value for the forces, I can run all Shadow Hawk LAMs (http://www.masterunitlist.info/Unit/Details/5040/shadow-hawk-lam-shd-x2) for now, sticking to BattleMech mode, which means the Bomb ability gets skipped anyway.

How many points are everyone's forces?

WiGE and such won't be a problem.  Just no aerospace for this run (maybe in the future?)

Total PV for the defense is a little over 2500, with unit skills being 2 or 3.  With three players I figure around 900 PV for each will be fine.  koalabirb is out for 8 weeks with training, so he will be coming in when he gets back.  JamesPryde got his forces to me already and he was in just over 900.  Mechs, vehicles, battle armor, and infantry are all allowed. The defense is only Mechs and vehicles.

We will be using the Chaos Campaign system with Standard Alpha Strike rules and special abilities. Year is 3068.  There won't be any way to replace units once the campaign starts, other than salvage, so plan accordingly.  Starting Warchest points is 1000, plus 3000 support points for each player.  The campaign will start with the players' forces on planet and making their first moves away from landing zone.

How does February 16th sound?  I can also do the 9th or the 23rd if needed.

James, Gio just asked this in lieu of finding his stash, and I wanted to pass on my decision.  Any units that have not been deployed already, you have one last chance to swap them out for something else.  Still has to fit the time period, and must be within +/- 5 PV of the previous unit.  Any and all units deployed today must remain.
Title: Re: San Diego Alpha Strike Association
Post by: Giovanni Blasini on 09 February 2019, 21:27:21
Is that +/- for each individual unit, as in 'Mech or vehicle, or overall?

For the individual unit, whatever that may be.  Being the first campaign for us, this will be a fluid work in progress as the kinks get worked out. ;)

OK, ran into a bit of an oddity.  Found a case where a unit, before factoring skill, was 4 or 5 points above the unit I'd planned to replace, and after applying skills, was 6 points higher.  To confirm, is the +/- 5 points before or after skill mods, then?

I was thinking in terms of final cost of the new unit versus that of the unit being replaced.

Also, don't forget to bring a medium and a heavy mech from the 3025 era for some classic play if we finish up the Alpha Strike game quickly.  I'll have the new box sets with me plus the maps from the WWE this year.  See ya guys Saturday.

I will have the next phase ready shortly.  You'll have some options on where to go from here.

But before that, I'm looking at starting to sprinkle in some of the advanced rules if everyone is interested.  So if there anything in particular you would like to see, please let me know.

Good eve all.  Next round is looking like May 25.  Just waiting to hear back from everyone.

Also, don't forget you guys have two options ahead of you: head for the city and spaceport, or make a run for depot #2.  Once you all make your choice I'll get everything written up.

As to advanced rules getting worked in, I'm looking at mines and some alternate munitions.  If that's a go, you as players will have access to it as well (especially since you raided the first depot).  Also considering putting the smoke rules into play.  If anyone has any thoughts or objections, please do share.

Good day everyone.  Proposed date for our next match is June 22.  James will be gone until the end of the month, so the AS campaign will be on hold until July.  For a change of pace, we'll play a round of classic BT.  Free for all style.  Last mech standing (and still mobile) wins.

How many units everyone can bring will depend on how many players we have.  No more than one lance/star regardless.  I'll figure out BV limits once I know how many folks are coming.  Units produced up to 3075 will be available, but no experimental tech.

Have a good one all.
Title: Re: San Diego Alpha Strike Association

Howdy all.  Here is the setup for the classic game on Saturday, June 22.

Number of units: 4  Units may be mechs only and may not be unique or custom (i.e, must be a known, produced variant.)  All units will be gunnery skill 3 and piloting skill 4, with one exception.  You may assign one unit to have gunnery skill 2 and piloting skill 4.
Battle Value Limit:  7500 BV  (please use standard battle values that are found on the Master Unit List, http://www.masterunitlist.info/ .  Do not adjust for skill)
Era Limit: Mechs from TRO 3075 or earlier
Rules Level: Standard
Tech Level: Inner Sphere or Clan (mixed unit groups are ok)

Victory Conditions:
The player with the last operational, and mobile, mech standing wins.  If the game is called due to time, the player with the most mechs left wins (same conditions).

If there are any questions, please let me know.

As far as time goes, with this being classic, setup will be a breeze.  I would like to start playing by 10:30 if that works for everyone.  I can hang until 4:00, so that's our time limit, though hopefully we'll be done before that.

Looking forward to the game!

Cheers!

Alpha Strike aside, I've talked/emailed you all on playing another round of classic.  July 5 at Game Empire, start playing by 10:30 or earlier.  Sounds like we've got 5 players for sure.  I haven't heard back from Giovanni yet.  So, here is the game plan:

Number of units: 3  Units may be mechs only and may not be custom (i.e, must be a known, produced variant.)  All units will be gunnery skill 3 and piloting skill 4, with one exception.  You may assign one unit to have gunnery skill 2 and piloting skill 4.
Battle Value Limit:  5000 BV  (please use standard battle values that are found on the Master Unit List, http://www.masterunitlist.info/ .  Do not adjust for skill)
Era Limit: Mechs may be chosen from any era
Rules Level: Standard (Standard and Advanced Tech are ok.  No experimental tech.)
Tech Level: Inner Sphere or Clan (mixed unit groups are ok)

Victory Conditions:  The player with the last operational, and mobile, mech standing wins.  If the game is called due to time, the player with the most mechs left wins (same conditions).

There you have it.  I'm planning on bringing the battle mats again, unless there is another map folks would like to use.

Hit me up with any questions you may have.  See ya all Friday.  Have a great Fourth of July!

Game time will be July 20 at Game Empire, starting at 10:30.  If there are any questions, send them my way by all means.

Not entirely sure I'll be able to make it. We've got a big upgrade of our electronic health record system at work kicking off the night before, and since the team of four I'm on manages the 120 or so production Windows servers for the software, we're working round-the-clock shifts starting that night.

We just got our schedules, and I work from 6 PM on the 20th to 7 AM the next day, then Monday I start a midnight to 1 PM shift for the next 7 days after that. I'm not sure yet if I'll need to be asleep during the game or not.

Howdy all.  Game day fast approaches.  Hope you are all ready for this final showdown of the campaign.  I look forward to discussing where the next one goes.

And as always, should anyone following along like to check out the action:

Have a great week everyone!

Guys, great game today and a good close to this first campaign.  I learned a lot running this, and I hope to take those lessons into the next campaign.  I'll get the closing details out to you players.  I do hope everyone enjoyed this.  May the next one be even better.

So in that vein, we'll take next month off for the campaign and throw down with some classic again.  I should have the next campaign ready to go for September.  As for August game dates, I'm looking towards the end of the month.  Have to double check the schedule when I get back to work tomorrow.

Thanks again guys.  It was a ton of fun! 8)

Cheers,
Valkerie

Hi guys.  At this juncture, the two Saturdays I'm free for August are the 17th and the 24th.  Let me know what works and we'll set the date.

I'm also free the following weekend, but as it is Labor Day weekend, I think we'll steer clear of that.

Ok, change of plans.  Work, in its infinite wisdom, has left me only one Saturday free and that is the 17th.  At this juncture I am still free the 31st, but that's Labor Day weekend and I'm sure Game Empire has something going on then.

Apologies for the limited availability next month. :(

Howdy all.  All right, game is Saturday, August 17th at Game Empire.  We will be playing out the classic portion of the 2018 World Wide Event.  Copies of it have been emailed out to you.  Hit me up with any questions you may have.  Hope you all can make it!

After this, we will start up the next Alpha Strike campaign. 8)

Hello all.  Unless there are any objections, will be moving forward into the new campaign on Saturday, September 14th at Game Empire.  Please have your force list into me by Tuesday of that week (if you haven't already), even if you can't make it.

Had enough interest in the contract along the Ghost Bear border, so that's the where we're headed.  Prepare accordingly. :)

As always, any questions, send them my way.  Enjoy the weekend guys!

Well it looks like most of my free time for gaming will be curtailed starting in September due to wife's medical issues and the need to ensure my wife does her rehab safely!!!  Of course additional rehab appointments may be added to the calendar.  Also need to be around to ensure she does not fall as she recovers and rehabs.

September Appointments:
9/9 Knee replacement, then medical appointments: 9/11, 9/16, 9/18 GI Procedure, 9/19, 9/20 Stress Test, 9/21, 9/23, 9/24, 9/26, 9/30

October Appointments:
10/3, 10/7, 10/10, 10/15, 10/28 Ear surgery

November Appointments:
11/21, 11/25

First, thanks for the heads up and I hope everything goes as smoothly as possible.

Add this to the other schedules conflicts we're having, and I'm thinking we hold on starting the campaign for now.  Plus this will give everyone plenty of time to work on their teams and get that all squared away.  I say we start the campaign off in December or January and and play some stand alone stuff till then.  We'll still play out the contract that puts you all on the Ghost Bear border of the Draconis Combine.

So on that note, anyone up for playing the Alpha Strike portion of the 2018 World Wide Event?  Part II of the Green Ghosts vs the Marik Protectors.  I can do Satudays (I'm free all day) or Sunday evenings after 5:30 in September.  I'm usually off Fridays as well, but the traffic stinks on the weekdays.  Let me know what works.

Cheers,
Valkerie

Next game is Saturday, September 28 at Game Empire.  Start time will be 11:00 AM.

Scenario will be the Alpha Strike portion of the 2018 WWE.  Green Ghosts vs. The Marik Protectors and the Stotzing militia.  I will be playing on the side of the Protectors.

If you want to be a part of the force creation for either side, please let me know which you would like to play by the 18th.

Have a great one all.

Hey everyone, just got word that Game Empire is doing a Magic release on Saturday, so that knocks us out of there.  Most of the other game shops are doing the same thing.  I'm willing to host at my house instead, unless someone can find a venue that's not doing a Magic release.  Info sent to your emails.

Sorry for the change of plans everyone.

Howdy all.  Thanks to everyone who made it for the last game.  I know life got in the way for several folks last time.  No worries, this campaign was built with that kind of thing in mind.  Still plenty of game for those who missed.

And on that note, next dates I have free are December 14 and 21.  I know this is a busy time for everyone, so if need be we can do a one off next month and pick the campaign up after the New Year.  Let me know what works for you.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

December 22 - Can do an evening game after 6
December 27, 28 - Free all day
December 29 - Can do an evening game after 6

Sorry about the change on the 21st.  Didn't expect my brother to cruise into town for our mom's birthday.

Let me know what works and we'll make some scrap metal.

Merry Christmas!

If you are interested, please let me know.  New players are always welcome!

And for anyone who is interested, there is potential for back to back game days.  Our Orange County friends are running an Alpha Strike game on Sunday, March 29th at Comic Quest in Lake Forest (roughly 40 minutes north from here in Vista).  If you are interested in joining that game, let me know.  I'll be going, so I'm happy to carpool.

We've been scrambling the last week to get as many staffers as we can to be able to work remotely, but also to set up the COVID-19 testing "cabanas" at some of our hospital sites.  Which resulted in this little ditty we came up with at work:

At the COVID (CO!) COVID Cabana (COVID Cabana)
The hottest spot north of Wuhan (here)
At the COVID (CO!) COVID Cabana
Sickness and fever will always deliver
At the COVID we all get ill

I don't want to get in the cart!

I've literally been coughing and having mild shortness of breath issues since mid-March.  I can't get a COVID-19 test, though, because I've not been running a detectable fever, and I've actually been sick too long.  My doctors aren't sure if I've got shiny new allergies combined with my existing reactive airway issues, or if something else is going on, but if I did have COVID-19, it wasn't considered severe enough to test me at this point.

Good evening all!  If things continue to go well, I'm looking to host some Battletech on my patio the end of June.  Specifically Saturday, June 27.  Tough to play without being in some kind of close quarters, so outdoors we go for maximum air flow. ;)  The awesome local pizza will be provided again.

The hope would be to get a couple of quick, linked games in, so Alpha Strike will be the game rules in play.  Exact scenarios will be forthcoming, but I will likely be running something set in the Dark Ages.

Let me know if you're interested.  Till then, stay healthy all.

Hi all!  Been far too long.  With the good news of things opening up again, it's high time to throw the dice again.  Anyone who is interested, 2nd Dragoon and myself will be a Game Empire in San Diego on Saturday, June 19.  No decision yet if we're playing Classic or Alpha Strike.  May do both depending on time and table space.  Tables are first come, first serve, so we'll be there at 10:00 AM right when they open.

If my schedule allows, I can go by to watch.
Nevermind, I am available, I will see you all there.

I am fairly new, for I played classic on megamek and I had not played alpha strike yet, and am in progress of painting my first lance.

How many BV/PV for classic and/or alpha strike? I can bring a 100-200 PV lance for a few alpha strike skirmishes.

Welcome aboard!  8)

Thank You, I appreciate the welcome. As often as I read the rules and watch others play online, it does me no good if I cannot play with others. I can only go so far playing a scenario out myself or against a bot on Megamek.

Here is my Death Commando lance for alpha strike:
(and maybe classic if time permits since need to leave at 3pm for work)

Mechs     PV     BV
CPLT-C1     32      1399
VND-1R      27        1024
WVR-6R      30      1101
RVN-4X      24        820
Total PV:113; Total BV:4344

Gunnery/Piloting for Classic are 4/5 and Alpha Strike skill is 4. We can adjust skills based on what BV/PV you want to round up to. I am staying with introductory variants and lance is themed post 4th SW.

I have a few other mechs with the base paint coated at the moment: Locust & Cataphract. I have the cardboard and paper standees as proxies for any mechs I do not have.
I prefer McCarron's Armored Cavalry; however, I am experimenting on mixing a suitable metallic blue for the 2nd MAC. For now I am painting Death commandos.

Looks like I'll be able to make it this time, though I was looking at something a wee bit different for my force.

Skills are AS 4, TW 4/5.  Total PV: 115, Total BV: 3763

I'm kind of surprised how much lower the BV is compared to yours, @Baijiu, given how close the PVs are.  Also, I may swap the J. Edgar for an SHD-X1 Shadow Hawk LAM (http://masterunitlist.info/Unit/Details/5039/shadow-hawk-lam-shd-x1) (which would only end up operating in 'Mech mode), and has a PV of 22, and BV of 828.

Those will be perfect for a first run in either system.  A lance game in Alpha Strike can go very fast, so we'll start with that and then see what time permits us.  And I totally understand, I learned best by playing.  It is one thing to read the rules, it is another thing to see the nuances of the game play out on the table.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask away here or PM me.

Looks like I'll be able to make it this time, though I was looking at something a wee bit different for my force.

  • CGR-1A1 Charger  PV: 18, BV: 981
  • WSP-1A Wasp  PV: 14, BV: 384
  • WSP-1W Wasp  PV: 12, BV: 373
  • WSP-1 Wasp  PV: 11, BV 314
  • Scorpion Light Tank (Standard)  PV 11, BV 306
  • Scorpion Light Tank (Standard)  PV 11, BV 306
  • Goblin Medium Tank (Standard)  PV 15, BV 555
  • J. Edgar Light Hovertank (Standard)  PV 23, BV 544

Skills are AS 4, TW 4/5.  Total PV: 115, Total BV: 3763

That looks fun to play against, though that may be best for a second game.  First game is going to be a quick mech lance game so any new players can get their feet wet first.  Here's what I'm bringing for that.

Thunderbolt TDR-5S
Shadow Hawk SHD-2H
Phoenix Hawk PXH-1
Jenner JR7-D
Total PV: 118
Total BV: 4315

2nd Dragoon is looking to play classic, so maybe we get two tables going.  One for classic and one for Alpha Strike.

Howdy all.  So starting to work on plans for next month.  Game wise it will be Alpha Strike.  Era will be in that nice little window just before the Clan Invasion, probably 3048.  Setup will be the Free Worlds League going over to poke the Lyrans for "reasons".  Likely a raiding type mission, but I haven't fully decided on that.  I have some other folks interested in playing as well, so we could have a decent size game going.  Once I have a tentative head count, I'll get the force info out.

Thinking July 24th at Game Empire for this.

Cheers all!

Excellent.  July 31 at Game Empire.  As before, I will be there at 10 when they open to grab a table.

Scenario will be a breakthrough on a dense city map.  Marik forces will be trying to get though to reach their target.  The Lyran forces will be deployed throughout the city in an effort to stop them.

Force info will be coming.

Howdy all.  Here's what we're working with for the next game and what you need to bring.

Year: 3048
Tech Level: Intro, Standard, and Advanced.  No Experimental tech.
Factions: Free World's League vs Lyran Commonwealth (technically FedCom at this point)
Scenario: FWL units on a breakthrough against the Lyran forces
Map Type: City
Force Size: 600 PV for each
Minimum Skill Allowed: 2

At this time, we have four committed players, counting myself.  My plan was to run the Lyran forces, and 2nd Dragoon wants to play them as well.  Baiju, I have a another player who will play on the FWL side if you'd be willing to join and balance the sides out.

For now guys, build up a lance that you would like to run that fits the bill. Aim for around 200 PV.  One note, you may not have more than two of the same unit, and if so, they must be different variants (yeah, I borrowed that from WolfNet). Once those are in we'll go from there.

Cheers all!

I have no objections playing FWL. Once I have my list is posted and approved; I will paint some forces (most likely Marik Militia).

Looks like early September is the best shot.  So, to get your mech juices flowing, this next round will be set during the Clan invasion.  OpFor will be Clan units.  Player forces will be IS.  I'm leaning towards Ghost Bears vs Draconis Combine.  If there are any other preferences, by all means, shout them out.  As for scenario, I'm open to suggestions.
Title: Re: San Diego Alpha Strike Association
Post by: Valkerie on 27 August 2021, 00:59:37
Howdy all.  The work schedule has started coming our for September.  At this juncture, here are the dates I'm looking at to run our next game at Game Empire:

9/10 or 9/11
9/16 or 9/17
maybe 9/28 (work schedule doesn't go out that far yet)

While 9/10 - 9/11 is a bit auspicious, I'd rather get us all going sooner rather than later, as I had to skip any gaming this month.  Let me know what works.

Scenario is a straight up head to head match of Clan Ghost Bear vs the Draconis Combine in 3050.  OpFor are the Clan Forces.  I'll have the rest of the details out shortly.

Cheers all!

Edit: Had the second September dates wrong.  Corrected now.

Howdy all.  While most of this has been communicated through email, wanted to post everything here again for anyone who may be watching and interested in checking out the action.  Game is this Friday and Game Empire, starting at 10:30 AM.  Scenario info:

Year: 3065 (FedCom Civil War Era)
Factions: Lyran Commonwealth vs Federated Suns
Max Force PV: 600
Max Force Unit Count: 16
Units Allowed: BattleMechs, Combat Vehicles
Lowest Unit Skill Allowed: 2
Tech Level: Standard and Advanced
Scenario: Objective Point Capture

There will be 5 objective markers on the board that can be captured by either side.  To win the scenario, there are three ways to do it:

1.  First side to capture all 5 markers
2.  First side to capture 4 markers and hold them for one turn
3.  First side to capture 3 markers and hold them for three turns
(The turn the marker is captured does not count towards the time needed to hold it)

Looking forward to a great game everyone!

Cheers,
Valkerie

Howdy all!  Thanks again to everyone who could make it out last game.  It was an excellent battle.  And for those who could not make it, hopefully you can make this next one.

And as to that, here are the dates I have available to run a game next month at this time:

November 12 or 13
November 19 or 20

My preference would be for the 13th or 20th (less traffic on Saturdays), but I can swing the two Friday dates if need be.  Figure the game being at Game Empire unless they're busy for some reason.

The game itself will carry on our march through the BT timeline and will be in the Jihad era this time.  I have no real details yet, other than the OpFor will be the hated Word of Blake and the other side will be Devlin Stone's Coalition.

After this, I would like to get back to running a campaign for everyone.  Ruleset would be Alpha Strike, but era and location would be up to what you players would like to enjoy.  Figure that starting after New Years.

Lastly, for December, if folks are available, I would like to plan a game of Classic Battletech.  Figure that to be in early December before the Christmas madness gets a hold of everyone.

Let me know what works.  Till then, have a great weekend everyone!  8)

Cheers,
Valkerie

Howdy all.  Sorry the last game had to be cancelled.  Hopefully we can get together this next month.

December 11 is shaping up to be a good day for a game.  Three of us are in already.  As far as to what we're playing, votes are for Classic this time so far.  I'll give it to the end of the weekend, but unless a slew of votes for Alpha Strike come in, figure on this one being Classic.  Details will be out after this weekend.

Hope everyone had a great Turkey Day!

Title: Re: San Diego Alpha Strike Association
Post by: Valkerie on 30 November 2021, 00:37:16
Well, with no votes going any other way, we're playing Classic on Saturday, December 11.  Everyone bring a lance.  Details below:

Lance Composition: one mech of each weight class
BV limit: 6000 BV (Final unit BV must include the cost of skill upgrades)
Year Limit: 3080
Tech Level: Intro, Standard, Advanced (no experimental tech)
Mechs Allowed:  Canon Mechs only (no customs)
Lowest Skill Allowed:  Gunnery 2, Piloting 2
Game will be played on my new 4' x 6' neoprene hex mat and with some hex terrain as well.  I'll be at Game Empire at 10:00 that day to grab a table.

As to the game scenario, figure on a mix of objective points and points for damaging/killing mechs.

Depending on how many folks show, we may have to adjust forces a little to keep the game within a reasonable amount of time.

Send any questions my way.

Cheers,
Valkerie

Good game today.  My Loki's right torso and right arm armor was held together with bailing wire and chewing gum with just a little bit of duct tape.  One more hit on the right side and he would have lost the right side.  The other mechs had little or no damage...    Sorry no pictures, hope someone else took pictures.

So good game everyone.  Some fun times, and nothing like an Urbanmech putting a head shot into a Royal Highlander (good job Baijiu!) While it was a team game, it quickly boiled down to some one on one brawling.  Between objective points and general slaughter, 2nd Dragoon and my buddy from up north won the day over Baijiu and myself.

We’ll get something going again next month.  I would like to start a new campaign, so let me know your thoughts on that.

Howdy all.  Game details for the 29th below:

Year: 3078 (Word of Blake Jihad)
Factions: Devlin Stone's Coalition vs. The Word of Blake
Max Force PV: 600 (this is per side, not per player)
Max Force Unit Count: 12
Units Allowed: BattleMechs, Combat Vehicles
Lowest Unit Skill Allowed: 2
Scenario: King of the Hill

Devlin Stone's Coalition has access to these factions (from the Master Unit List): IS General, All Houses (except Liao), Mercenary, Clans Wolf, Ghost Bear, Diamond Shark, and Nova Cat.

I will be running with the Word of Blake.  Let me know what side you would like to play and I'll get all the assignments out.  At this juncture, we're at four players.

Map will be city/industrial with a big fat hill in the middle.  Send any questions my way.

For the next group game, I'm looking at March 26 at Game Empire.  Game will be Alpha Strike, but the exact scenario will depend on how many folks are able to make it.  Map will be a city setup regardless.

Once I have a head count, I'll send the scenario out and the team info.

Looking forward to another good game!

Cheers,
Valkerie

Oof, been a bad boy and not updating this.  Back to it!

Howdy all!  Next game is going to be Saturday afternoon on July 30th.  Exact time TBD, but figure somewhere around 1:00 or 2:00 at Game Empire.  This one is going to be set in the current timeline, so get your ilClan on.

I will send out game details by the 16th.  For now, expect the OpFor to be the Lyran Commonwealth.  Player side will be a faction yet to be determined, but will likely be a mix of mercs and local forces.

Let me know if you can join in on the fun!

Cheers,
Valkerie

Howdy all.  For the July 30th Alpha Strike game we're going to keep things simple.  If you are coming, bring a couple of 150 PV lances.  Era is open.  The rest:
Tech Level:  All but Experimental
Units Allowed: Battlemechs, Combat Vehicles, Battle Armor
Skill Limit: None
Location: Game Empire, 11:00 AM

Game type will be determined on game day.  Not sure how many folks are coming yet, and we may have multiple new players this time.  Looking to make things easy as possible.  Figure on going head to head, or a simple objective game.  I will be bringing extra lances that fit the bill if anyone just wants to show up and roll dice.
Map won't be anything crazy.  Few hills and forests, with a little bit of shallow water mixed in.

Looking forward to another good game day!

Cheers,
Valkerie

Not sure yet on the 30th, but I did have another question: is anyone going to Comic-Con?  I noticed that there's going to be a group running Battletech there, at least on Thursday (the only day I have tickets for).  Also, if everything goes well with the painting phase of things, I'll be dressed as a Griffin.

I am not going.  Can't speak for anyone else.

Looking forward to seeing that Griffin costume.  8)

Game is still good to go.  Game Empire at 11:00 AM.

Extra lances and dice will be available if anyone just wants to step in and play.

Good game today.  Only three of us  made it, but we had a good battle, and had a new player step in and join us today.  Decided on a simple objective point capture scenario with four different players fighting over it.  My whole force bit the bullet, but I did win the title of most mechs to die on the objective without capturing it.  ;D

Next month’s game will be at At Ease Games this time.  Date to be determined.  Till then, stay frosty all.  8)
