Just watched Bullit
« on: 27 January 2011, 23:11:51 »
I just finished Bullit. Friends have been bugging me for years to watch Bullit, mainly for the car chase scene. I have to say the movie itself is fairly boring, but the car chase scene is awesome.

I think it's the sound of the engines the Charger and the Mustang makes. It just sounds sexy as hell.

Anyway, if you've seen the movie let me knbow if you think it's overblowem, or allright.

I've been hearing the praises of Bullit for years, and apart from a rather splotchy car chase; I thought it was rubbish.

Now Vanishing Point is a different story......

Good Lord, I remember hearing this exact same arguement on Top Gear. As I recall, Jeremy Clarkson was for Vanishing Point.  :D

I though Hammond was Vanishing point, since he's the Challanger guy.  Either way...

I think all men know in their hearts the Bullit is terrable, except for one perticular bit in the middle, which makes up for all of it, and every chick flick we ever have had to sit through as well.  But, we can't say that (except on the internet, with the protection of anonimity that it gives us) because we can't let on that we're not just barbarians who like cars.

It's an ok film the story itself is pretty weak. But that car chase is the genesis of the modern movie chase scene. Before then car chases were generally pretty boring pan and cut affairs. Everything from Vanishing Point to the Italian Job through a dozen Bond movies to Ronin and a hundred others, they all owe a debt of gratitude to Bullit.

Now if only they'd edited out that damned green Beetle....  :D

Between Bullitt and Mad Max, the modern action car chase was born and then matured.

When speaking of car chases, one must _never_ overlook Blues Brothers. :D

That said, Blues Brothers does owe a lot to Bullit, and some things to Mad Max.

Can't stand Bullitt, but I love the original cheezy, indie feel of Gone In 60 Seconds by Hablicki.

In my opinion, Bullit is a meh movie.  The car chase scene is pretty damn good.

Some little details about it though -

Steve McQueen really wanted to do all of the driving, but he could not handle the car on the streets and had to bring in a professional driver.

Because that chase was filmed at actual speed, they had to pump up the Mustang and detune the Charger to keep it following the 'Stang.

If you look real close at the scene in the city, you can see the worlds fastest Volkswagen Beetle. :D ;D

Have to agree with everyone else. A very meh movie with an incredible car chase sequence. This, the original Gone in 60 Seconds and the French Connection (car chasing subway train) were great starting point for what was to come. The Blue Brothers, Mad Max, The Italian Job, Ronin (I think that has the great chase early on) all owe a debt to those movies.

Naturally. Mention car-chase movies and someone is going to invoke the holy Australian Trinity.  >:(

**rewind a few years back**
There I was, 4 years old and couldn't sleep so I ventured out into the living room and found my Dad watching some cheesy movie.

'...wait Dad, why is he handcuffing that man to a car and then...OH MY GOD!! "   :o

I'm not sure I've seen those sorts of movies the same since...and don't even get me started on "Soul Train on the Aussie outback", otherwise known as Mad Max Thunderdome.

Well, gee. I have to admit I liked Road Warrior and bought it a few years ago, but never thought much of Mad Max. I figured it was just yet another cheesy 1980s car chase/crime-out-of-control movie, any of a dozen of the kind produced in the same era.

But it's a car chase icon, huh?

The opening chase is the good one in Mad Max; Teh Last of the V8 Interceptors never really gets to show off until the opening of The Road Warrior; The rest of the time it's a form of Deus ex Machina: No one can do anything about it, 'till it's OSKed . . .

I believe Car and Driver declared Ronin to be the new number one card chase, for Our Heros inthe Peugeot . . .

The best part of Bullit is the fact they let the cars do the sound track. No music to get in the way of those lovely V-8s.
It is rumored Khan Pryde shot the first scientist she saw after laughing nonstop for ten minutes.

The rest of the Fast and Furious movies were really kinda bland, too much sex and chest thumping. TD was different and it felt good.

1968 Dodge Charger for the win! 8)

The Charger real smoked the Mustang which had to be modified to try to keep up.  Steve insisted in driving the car himself and you can see that he spins out in one turn.

GOOSE YOU'RE ALIVE!  #P

Seriously, the thing about Mad Max was that noone had really done the seriously in-your-face car chases before.  Yeah, the opening one is the big one, but the sheer amount of crashyboom as well as all the onboard camera work was new.  So was going all-out with the stunts; the Pursuit Special at the end needed much more time to shine but the biker rundown should be noted.  There wasn't any kind of safety breakaways or whatnot, they just went straight up for the look and feel.  It doesn't hurt one bit that the producer was a doctor and treated all kinds of injuries from crashes on the highways, so he had an idea of what he was looking for.

But things like "oh, bikers take a spill, now watch the second guy's cycle hit the first one's rider in the head" and "okay we're goingto drive these bikes over a concrete abutment, down 30 feet into a river, and if you don't break your neck it's in the final cut" sort of filmmaking were new.  That's why I bring up the first Mad Max film.  The second was great, and the car chase with the tanker (and the plot knife-twist) was one of the best ones filmed in my opinion.

They're not great movies.  They're good movies.  But there are great elements in them, that in 1979 and 1981, were still revolutionary.  Just like what Star Wars did for miniatures filming and special effects camerawork, the first two MM films did for car chases.  Sure there was groundbreaking stuff before it, but they really changed the way people looked at such stunts.  And they did it in a very visceral way, which we don't get anymore with all the CGI detachment from the real thing.
