I am definitely in to fund this.
I'll pledge $150 to help make this happen.

I'd love to do more, but con season is around the corner, and I need to re-check the budget first.

I can pledge up to $200, which should cover what is needed to cap this off.

I will be able to be more specific around the 15th, but about $150-200. Will update this when I know 100%.

I can do $200, however I do not have an active paypal account.

If I am counting the posts right, I think the "conservative" options places us at $900, with $25 extra in "maybe" money.

Nope! I think you're right, wraith. The money is there!
(I think I missed the change in Mike19k's pledge, taking us up to 950-975, 1000 with my slight bump.)

At this stage, I think I can kick in the last bit to take us over. I'll update my main post, rather than adding it here. *Hopefully* that will avoid confusion.

I don't mind coordinating the payment, since it doesn't look like too many people are involved, and I do have a PayPal account, but I am also happy to defer to somebody else.

I have wanted these things, like, forever.  8)

Having a few extra people pledge won't be a bad thing, some might have trouble transferring the money. Or if we had a real excess, I think that some of us would be willing to shift our share to the riflemen.

Behrle Hubbuch has been one of, if not the main BT sculptor for many, many years, now for IWM, before that for Ral Partha.

Look, I don't usually self-arbitrate any threads on here, but there is a rule and a discussion thread right here in this sub-forum. Let's get with the FF sculpts in question, shall we? ;)

Behrle, the one question I have is - can we get you to go really small, tiny and cute with these? And to channel as much of Aliens as possible for the wheeled APC and as steampunk-ey as all heck for the tracked one? O:-)

Sure, 21mm long is the dimension I'm starting with.  The wheeled APC was definitely inspired by the one in Aliens.  The other two idano, I'll generate some orthos and let you see what I have in mind ASAP.

Alright folks, I have to communicate with B-3 first to make sure I fully understand the PayPal portion of this.  Once I hear back from him I will send PM's to each of you with my info and announce in this thread that I have done so.  I ask that from this point forward please keep all replies to this thread to a minimum, and on the topic of the APC funding.  The only members who need to be posting are those who have pledged, are doing the sculpting, or are running Fan Financing.  I have a day job and work long hours so I would like to make this as easy for myself as possible.  Financiers, please be patient with me.  I will do my level best to reply to any questions once per day, after work.  Thank you!

This is what I have down for financiers and funds:
$200   klarg1
$200   ]mike19k
$200   jymset

I have to confess, I was king of hoping this would come out a little oversized for 10-ton vehicles, so they'd look like 7 guys would fit inside. (Normally, I'd be right there with you on the tiny size.)

The notion of 28 troopers cramming into the old Maxim model is a little... improbable.

Oh well. I'm sure I'll be happy with the result.

I don't have the miniatures handy to measure, but I think cache is suggesting something around 18-20mm in length, while I am suggesting more like 25-27.

I'll try to actually measure some existing minis and post better numbers by tomorrow, if nobody beats me to it.

Paid.

And forget scale B-3. make em a bit smaller than the heavy APCs so we can get at least a Platoon's worth (4) in a pack. otherwise they'll be almost as big as a manticore.

One thing to remember is that once the money is paid to B-3, this is going to the QCC where they will decide on the dimensions.  I'm posting my opinion with as much data as I can to justify it.  Whether or not they listen is up to them.

That being said...

The 5 ton Savannah Master is 7mm wide x 12mm long.
The 20 ton Blizzard (with 6 tons of cargo space for up to 56 troopers) is 15mm wide x 25mm long without the spoiler.

I think 25-27mm long is way out of the ballpark.  I don't think we should be looking to set a new scale standard with these.  They should fit with existing vehicles.  If the largest Maxim infantry variant (crew + 81 troopers) were sized properly it would be almost the size of the Leviathan warship.  That just doesn't work.

You don't need to add a lot of size just to get 7 troopers on board.  Take the real-world M1117 Guardian for example: It's listed at 3 crew and 1 passenger with an APC variant having 3 crew and 8 troopers.  The standard length (according to the wikipedia) is 237 inches and the APC variant adds 24 inches to the length for the addition of 7 troops.  That's only a 10% increase.  The percentage size increase for larger numbers of troopers grows considerably.

I'm suggesting the wheeled and tracked APCs should be 12mm wide x 16mm long and the hover APC should be 13mm wide x 16mm long.  Also, B-3, I have high resolution images of each of the APCs taken out of TRO: 3039 that I can email to you.  They're too big to post.

Sounds like I guessed high on the size of a savannah master, although I was basing it on your earlier suggestion that the end result come out between it and the blizzard.

I'd agree that 25 is too high based on that, although B-3's original guess of 20 or 21 might be in line with modern sculpts. (Width will depend on B-3's interpretation of the proportions suggested by the art.)

I'll wait and see how the QC thread comes out.

Sounds like wheeled and tracked APCs 12mm wide x 16mm long and the hover APC 13mm wide x 16mm long are good size(s) for these three.  I think I have the book that has these in it but thanks for the offer.  If I can get any more art and/or screen shots from MW3 of these it will really help solidify the designs.

While I'm not part of the founding, I agree with the 11 mmm option, it looks better.  I have a question regarding the back area, in the picture it seems that it becomes wide and that the grill panel is angled in a 60ยบ from the main body line and the back is as wide as the cushion. Is this correct or a perspective mishap?

I prefer the 11mm option, too.

Is there any way of fitting a 2nd (rotary) MG into the turret, as per stats? The second one may be obscured by the way the turret is oriented in the illustration.

Looking great, Behrle!

I also think that 11mm would look better.

However I am a bit concerned about the air-intakes on the sides of the center body, I see them on the original and the side perspective, but they are missing on the top view.

Orthos are generally used in the QCC process foe just getting the general shape and size of the mini established. The aren't meant to be detail complete but rather provide a guide to be used when scaling and sizing the mini. Have no fear, B-3 is excellent at getting all the details.

I think the 11mm looks better as well; not a fan of equally square vehicles myself.

Could we do a dual MG turret though as suggested above? Not sure that would show up that well at this size...but could it work?

Agree with 9 mm, though at that width, the tracks should probably be narrower. Also, the snout could probably be lower-slung, and vertically thinner. The angle of its top glacis should correspondingly probably be more severe and as a result, the whole body of the vehicle somewhat lower.

That said, the ortho is looking fantastic and this is exactly why I pledged my contribution. {>{>

Just chiming in.

I agree w/ 11MM & 9MM options that most suggested.

Also agreed w/ 2nd MG for the Hover, it appears your looking at the turret in profile/at angle & so you only see the 1 MG in 3026.
At least that is how I'd always figured it.

Finally, I 2nd the suggestion that these be 4 to a pack.
They are smaller & should easily fit & it just makes sense to have a "Platoon" of infantry sized package.

I'm torn between the 10mm and 9mm versions mainly because at that size the difference will hardly be noticeable.  Assuming minimal shrinkage through the master to production mold process, either is fine for me.

Shrinkage is 1-dimensional, and as such, this thing will be losing height, not width.  Keep that in mind.

Seems like the Beginner Set/Lance Pack minis shrunk all around, not just along the mold lines.  Those were near completely metal masters.

Question.
Why are the turrets off center?
And on the wheeled one, why does it appear to be over a side door?
That just doesn't seem like how the internals would be laid out.

I would guess that has a lot to do with IRL the sub-components of the turret that are in the body.

Talking about doors, will all the APCs have them on both sides? They are a bit ambiguous now.
Title: Re: 1st Quarter 2015 Funding - Armored Personnel Carriers - FUNDED!!!
Post by: B-3 on 04 March 2015, 16:52:00
The APC in Aliens had a sliding door on only one side and a driver door on the other and the turret was on a track and moved around the hull and had no internals. The Hover will have a big hatch/ramp on the back.  It looked to me that the guns on the turrets or the whole turret were off to one side on the tracked and wheeled APC's, just my interpretation of the art.  No waitaminit I have it! It's so they can depress the guns lower on that side to better cover the troops as they are coming and going.  :D

Loose's art took a lot of liberty with physics.  For example, how does a wheeled vehicle whose front wheels clearly have no wheel wells make turns?  Trying to translate some of that stuff into three dimensions must be a challenge.  I'm really liking what I see so far, and look forward to the finished product on my painting desk.

Yeah, I suppose rear-wheel steering is a possibility.

I like the compromise size at 6.5mm.

Man, I missed a lot in this thread.
On the one hand, I regret dropping out for a while and not keeping up with the updates.
On the other hand, I agree with all of the decisions made so far.  ;D

I do still kinda wish they could be slightly larger. (Forgetting how other Battletech minis scale, at a "generic" 6mm scale, the wheeled version is now only about 7 scale feet wide.) I know I'm in the minority though.  :-X

Hi guys, this is my first contact with the fan financing of BT miniatures.

How does this work? Is it like kickstarter? The guys that "pledged" get the figures / money they spent as credit and then the mass production run begins? When can I as a non-pledger get my hands on the miniature? Can you say this in a general way? Is there an overview of what figures I could support or of the figures that were fan-financed during the last months? I read something about a Black Knight with a sword somewhere but lost the link. Is this the only place where figures are "kickstarted"? I only saw 1 kickstarter entry by IronWindMetals concerning some Comstar LAMs.

Thanks in advance for answering these dozens of questions :D

Quad MG here: http://ironwindmetals.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=4638

(Yeah... the archive bit hurts a little.)

;)
I think that B-3 can create better quality. And we won't have to deal with the extra junk. ;)

This had made me hopeful:

Finally, after all these years I can sense the great void is about to be filled.  Thanks you so much!

No problems, happy to be of service (as always). I am sure we should be able to get a decent sized order together with Fletch, especially if they get released at roughly the same time as the primitive Rifleman.

I have to say that these look much cooler than I expected. I help fund it because that we did not have them, but now seeing them I may have to get a bunch of them.

I would like to say that 3026 was the first BattleTech book I ever actually bought (though I had been tangentially been involved before that) and since I became an infantryman much later in life, these three AFVs have always had a very special place in my heart and mind.  So I heartily thank everyone who has been involved in this process; the models look exactly like what I have been looking for all these years.

I would also like to mention one additional tidbit:

Loose's art took a lot of liberty with physics.  For example, how does a wheeled vehicle whose front wheels clearly have no wheel wells make turns?

This is actually a bit of a misconception; many real-world wheeled vehicles (and some fabulous military ones) can make turns without actually turning the wheels, such as the French AMX-10RC (and a prettier AFV you won't likely find, other than if it had four axles, perhaps):

They use skid-steering, which is essentially how tracked vehicles turn (short version:  they stop one side's wheels and continue moving the other side's to accomplish the turn).

Anyways, thanks to all who were involved at every level; I only wish I'd gotten here earlier to be involved somehow.  Hopefully, given their finished dimensions, they will be priced in accordance with similar microarmor kit allowing them to be procured in numbers commensurate with their usage in-universe...   ;D

intriguing.  I never knew such a thing existed.  Kind of cool, actually. Thanks for the enlightenment!  :)  Now, if you can explain the Typhoon's front end (SRMs, headlights...), I'll give you double credit!

Not Origins, GenCon I am hoping some of the pending web only stuff is out. First the new LE and 2nd quarter releases need to get through the mold room.

They are not a con special so as soon as molds are done and Mike give me the green light I will put them up on the web store.

Way smaller than 1/6th the size of the Rommel, as I feared, but beautifully sculpted.

Overall, a win.  O0
