Title: Era report 3052
Post by: ds9guy on 12 April 2011, 00:09:43
Would this book be a good purchase for soemone who doesn't have alot of the old sourcebooks or novels that cover the Clan Invasion?
Or is it good for players who have alot of the old stuff?

It looks like an overview type of work that covers old ground in a new way.

I wan't sure from the product description who this is really meant for in terms of audience.  Is this to fill in new players on the Clan Invasion?

Both, honestly. New players will get most of the info they missed from older books, while it's presented in a new format with new tidbits thrown in to give older players interest or help them gain new insight on the era. It's actually of great interest to me, since I got into the game when 3058 was new, and aside from the two trilogies dealing with the Invasion, much of that time period is actually a mystery to me.

Definitely yes, alot of info on factions, units and battles. Also, the Era Tracks allow for quick fights to simulate the time period and the fighting styles of the Clans and the Inner Sphere.

Yes and No. As a returning player from the 90's, I still found a bite of information that I had not really known about from back then (Like Rasalhague and the Diamond Sharks) but other things were simply repeats of info found in other books which cannot be helped since I already know alot about certain factions, units, characters, etc. However, I am definitely glad I bought the book and plan to buy the 3062 one whenever it comes out.

Okay, at first I was a skeptic because I have all the old FASA stuff from the 90s.  But it's worth it for the campaign alone.  So if you like playing Battletech and are looking a new campaign, this is it.

Just picked this one up this weekend from the FLGS and love it.  We're getting back into the game, playing through the Starterbook: Sword and Dragon system which uses a slightly simplified version of Chaos Campaign and takes you up through 3049, right to the brink of the Clan Invasion...making this book a perfect bridge.  While it picks up the campaign in 3052, which is historically accurate for McKinnon's Rangers, it also accounts for setting things in the early clan invasion era.  We're itchin' to move our campaign into it!

Incidentally, I know bits and pieces about IS's first contact with the clans, involving an Explorer Corps Jumpship that made one jump too far.  I haven't read any of the novels from the clan era; which novel/sourcebook covers the events surrounding that initial contact with the clans in the greatest detail?

Inner Sphere perspective: read the Blood of Kerensky trilogy by Michael Stackpole.

Clan perspective: read the Legend of the Jade Phoenix trilogy by Robert Thurston

I found the stuff about the gradual introduction of tech to be both fun and useful. The character art is fun just for the sake of how terrifying most of Clan Smoke Jaguar is.
