tell me about: the 32nd century Tikonov Guard
« on: 08 August 2017, 16:50:47 »
Looking through Campspecs i stumbled over the 1st through 4th Tikonov Guards, units i was not familiar with. checking Sarna, it turns out that while the name was based on long dead Age of War units, the forces in question are from the Dark Age, and formed from pro-capellan dissident groups on Republic worlds.

i'd never heard of these guys, and i wish i had because they seem a far better fit to my attempt to build an Alpha Strike Liao force than the background i had already done, which required the invention of a new type of unit.

While they are named for the Age of War era formation, the Tikonov Guards are an entirely new formation. There are four augmented regiments, raised from pro-Capellan insurgents and defecting RAF planetary guard units from across Prefectures IV, V,  and VI. They were equipped initially with both stolen RAF equipment and 'Mechs supplied by the CCAF. Following their reorganization, they have preferred to use Tikonov-built designs like the Kosheci, Thunderbolt and Cataphract in their ranks.

Their units are painted Dark Green and Goldenrod. I suspect this scheme is based on the MWDA Liao miniatures.

The 2nd Tikonov is the most gratutiously Soviet-flavoured unit I can think of in CBT history. I love it.

do we know when they were created exactly? Sarna just says "after grey Monday"

would they be likely to make use of Fa-Shih Battlearmor?

FM 3145 has more info, though not much. No solid date of creation is given, but they were reformed as proper units (rather than rebels) as the CCAF proper took their planets. So I'd guess their formation  as late 3130's, maybe 3140.

As to equipment, Capellan gear is being phased in as quickly as possible, so they'd probably use a lot of Fa-Shih, but also have a high percentage of whatever the Republic was using.

i just have a ton of Fa-shih (have a pack of them from IWM, and i will probably be using single suits to a base), while most of my other BA are MWDA figures and most are earmarked for other faction units.

i'm not sure i want to rework my current force to incolude those example designs, but maybe i can relabel to an existing CapCon unit and build a 2nd capellan mech force with lower tech (to save points) thunderbolts, cataphracts, Vindicators, etc. maybe just expand the civilian force i already have to represent a unit in transition between insurgants and formal military?

All FM3145 says is "The regiment flies dark green banners from their mechs and vehicles"

The 2nd Tikonov Guard is made up largely of ethic Russians and other Eastern Europeans from Tikonov and surrounding worlds. Their insignia is a yellow hammer on a five-pointed red star. The unit's members break boards and bottles over each other to prove their strength. You tell me.

I'll agree that the 2nd Tikonov sounds thoroughly Russian.  I'll even nod that they'd surely win a "Russia-Off" but that wasn't the standard here.  It was a "Soviet-Off". ;)

When it comes to unit insignias, the 2nd doesn't have an honest-to-goodness Soviet Sickle-n-Hammer as their insignia.  Or (at one point) manned by honest-to-goodness commies socialists.  Or is called "The Red Horde".  I'm gonna stay with the 4th Donegal on the measure of "Most Soviet". YMMV of course.

Pins as the struts, green construction paper for the banners?

If the banners are just being flown off the back (say, from the middle of the back), you can make a banner out of green stuff and attach it there.  You could also try a thin line of CA glue and a banner made out of a short length of ribbon or fabric.

You could also use some of the Lego flag pieces (e.g. the streamer flag), snipping and filing to get a clean edge.
