BACK IN THE COCKPIT!

After a long hiatus it's time to get back in the cockpit Calgary! Come on out to Myth Games for a good old fashioned smash and bash to wreck some 'Mechs!

A new Mercenary Company on its first contract are settling in.

But on their first patrol, will there be something lurking?

The balloon goes up at 1300 hrs (1pm) on March 28, 2015 at Myth Games.

All materials will be provided although if you have a lucky instrument of writing and set of dice, feel free to bring them along.

Hope to see you all at Myth after this long hiatus!
-Regard  your solders as your children, and they will follow you into the deepest valleys.  Look upon them as your own beloved sons and daughters.
And they will stand by you, even unto death.

It's been awhile but with the rise in players due to the KS and the computer games as well as the pandemic shutting things down I thought I would nudge this thread and give a quick rundown on things here including an upcoming Alpha Strike event run by a Shadowrun Agent here in Calgary who is branching out into AS though he is not yet on here.

We have three Battletech Agents in Calgary now as well as this agent who is crossing over. Events are slowly starting up again as spring approaches. Some of which I will be running and others with be run by The Colonel and the other Battletech LorianSunrider.

However for starters we have this event:

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2023 AT 2 PM MST
Alpha Strike, MRC intro and Battles.
@ Ogre's Den Gaming Club (#23, 3220 5th Ave NE, Calgary, AB, Canada)
Hosted by Craig "Dralzen" Alpen Agent #675

Intro to BattleTech Alpha Strike and Regular battle as well.
- lists will be 400PV
- 4-8 mechs
- can have
- 1 mech can have a skill of 0
- 2 mechs can have a skill of 1
- rest will be between skill 2 or higher
- 10 points for Battle Field Support (BSP)
- 1 mech can have an actual pilot card.
- you can buy pilot skills also.

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 19 AT 12 PM – 4 PM
Battletech: Alpha Strike Beginners Day
Imaginary Wars (10233 Elbow Drive SW #135, Calgary, AB)

Battletech Alpha Strike is the rules system that allows Battletech players to play out larger-scale battles in the same amount of time (often less!) as a small game of classic Battletech!
We'll be running potentially TWO tables on this Sunday:
TABLE #1 - MISSION: CAPTURE THE FLAG
- we'll be aiming at making teams for the scenario (3v3 is a possibility!)
PLAYERS' FORCES DETAILS:
- Bring one Inner Sphere Lance or Clan Star (max: 200pts)
- Up to 1 veteran pilot (Skill Value of 3)
- All other units will have Skill Value of 4.
- Special Abilities *will* be in play.
- No Special Pilot Abilities, Special Command Abilities or Force Organization Special Abilities will be used.
PLAYERS BRING:
Battlemech models, Pencils and Alpha Strike Unit Cards
(Players can use the Master Unit List to generate their cards; restrictions of technology will be up to the Clan Invasion of 3049 and no further).
TABLE #2 - LEARN TO PLAY ALPHA STRIKE
This will be a straight-up battle game, geared towards new players, and we will focus on the basics of Alpha Strike.

Welcome ‘Mech Commander, you are one of several who have been selected to showcase your talent, to achieve your aspirations, and leave your own unique mark upon the Universe as we know it. You will compete to earn a place within a mercenary unit. However, let it be known that only three of you will be selected to join the ranks from this location.

These are the dates and times where you can test your mettle and the rules that shall form the standard for that particular slot in this competition. Specific details will follow the dates.

Thursday 23 March 2023:
- Battletech Total Warfare. Begins at 1 pm MST. Ends at 4 pm.
- Alpha Strike. Begins at 1 pm MST. Ends at 4 pm.
- Battletech Total Warfare. Begins at 5 pm MST. Ends at 8 pm.
- AlphaStrike. Begins at 5pm MST. Ends at 8pm.

Friday 24 March 2023:
- Battletech Total Warfare. Begins at 1 pm MST. Ends at 4 pm.
- Alpha Strike. Begins at 1 pm MST. Ends at 4 pm.
- Battletech Total Warfare. Begins at 5 pm MST. Ends at 8 pm.
- AlphaStrike. Begins at 5pm MST. Ends at 8pm.

Saturday 25 March 2023:
- Battletech Total Warfare. Begins at 1 pm MST. Ends at 4 pm.
- Alpha Strike. Begins at 1 pm MST. Ends at 4 pm.
- Battletech Total Warfare. Begins at 5 pm MST. Ends at 8 pm.
- AlphaStrike. Begins at 5pm MST. Ends at 8pm.

Sunday 26 March 2023:
- Battletech Total Warfare. Begins at 2 pm MST. Ends at 5 pm.
- Alpha Strike. Begins at 2 pm MST. Ends at 5 pm.

Furthermore, each day there will be an open non-competitive match for those Mechwarriors who wish to come out to enjoy the atmosphere and participate in this launch party to either learn the skills they need to pilot a ‘Mech (learn to play Battletech) or to continue to hone their skills in a friendly environment. The units you will cut your teeth on will be Clan machines and technology. The times that this will be open for participation will be from 2 pm to 8 pm, Thursday through Saturday, and 2 pm to 5 pm Sunday.

Please arrive early so all matches may begin promptly at the time listed.

Also pizza and pop will be provided to participants so they may compete at optimal levels. There is a fee to enter this competition as laid out by the host venue Ogre’s Den Gaming Club. There will also be some level of recognition of participation with swag that will be given out as outlined by the venue.

Basic Rules and Expectations:
- Wil Wheaton’s Rules of Participation are expected.
- All participants competing to earn a slot in the mercenary unit will be expected to sign in and register their ‘Mech of choice including the variant being played(explained below) upon arriving.
- Each participant may compete in more than one event but they will use the scoring they earn in the last event they competed in and must use the ‘Mech variant they have registered in the first match they played if they choose to enter in more than one match.
- All players are asked to bring a pair of D6s, a pencil, a record sheet for each slot they plan to participate in, and an official Catalyst Game Labs/Iron Wind Metals BattleMech miniature for the competition. Specifics for the limitations on units available for choice will be listed below and will use the Master Unit List.

Battletech Total Warfare Grinder: There will be a stack of twenty-four BattleMechs and an appropriate chassis miniature to represent the ‘Mech as it is pulled by the player from the stack to compete with. Each player will earn points based on whether it is a solo kill or a shared kill. To share in the kill, you must do at least twenty (20) points of damage to the opposing unit. This will be recorded on the back of the receiving unit and be initialed by the player who has done the damage. Each player will put their name on the sheet they pull in the Mechwarrior slot.

At any point either at the start of the match or after one of their ‘Mechs has died, a player may field their personal unit of choice. The match will end either at time or when there are no more units able to be fielded. At that point, all sheets will be turned in and the points tallied. The scoring of the points will also be weighted based around the number of participants at the table.

Each table will host a maximum of four players and if we have enough participants during a slot multiple tables will be opened for play. At the end of all events, the scores will be compared and the winners determined.

Personal Unit: There will be no customization allowed. It must be a stock, canon ‘Mech that is not a unique or a named variant. The unit must be Tournament Legal and use only Inner Sphere Technology from no later than but including the Jihad Era. You may use the latest stable versions of MegaMek Lab, Solaris Skunk Werks, or the Master Unit List to determine your unit of choice. Record Sheets can come from the official Record Sheets available for purchase but I would recommend using one of the two mentioned programs as they are current with any errata corrections and will make adjusting for skills easier. The Adjusted BV2 cap for the unit with Piloting and Gunnery must fall between 2300 – 2500.

Alpha Strike Three-Rounder: This event will consist of three rounds of play in various formats which will begin with each player controlling a pair of ‘Mechs that they will randomly pull and compete against another opponent. The second round will vary but the third round, each player may bring in a personal unit from the Master Unit List with the following filters. Skill will remain at 4.

     Personal Unit:

http://www.masterunitlist.info/Unit/Filter?Name=&HasBV=false&MinTons=60&MaxTons=100&MinBV=&MaxBV=&MinIntro=&MaxIntro=&MinCost=&MaxCost=&HasBFAbility=&MinPV=50&MaxPV=53&Rules=4&Types=18&BookAuto=&FactionAuto=&AvailableEras=13&AvailableEras=247&AvailableEras=14

AS PV: 51 to 53. Rules: Standard. Type: BattleMech. Availability: Clan, Civil War, Jihad.

Winners: After scoring is tabulated, the top player of Alpha Strike will be awarded one of the slots in the mercenary unit. The final two will be the top performing commanders in the Battletech Total Warfare Grinders.

As mentioned for the Grinders, you do not have to play every day as participation and point scoring is not cumulative. If a player chooses to participate more than once or cross over between Alpha Strike and Battletech than only their last game played will be counted for scoring. So, you are rolling the dice on whether you can do better or will end up coming out worse. That’s your choice when you risk taking the field yet again.

The top three winners for each location will be given their opportunity to make a unique mark on the BattleTech universe.

Good luck ‘Mech Commander. Prove your mettle to earn that opportunity!

Let the Metal Hit the Floor.

Alpha Strike Tournament at Ogres Den.
15$ entry fee to be paid at Ogre's den
May 28, 2023 at 10am starting around 11am.
Rules for force creation.
The BTCC uses the Alpha Strike: Commander’s Edition (AS:CE) ruleset. Unless otherwise noted, only
rules from that source are legal for a BTCC AS event. The BTCC does not, by default, use Optional Rules
(136-179, AS:CE) unless listed below. The BTCC does not use Special Command Abilities (102-109, AS:CE)
and in addition, only the Forced Withdrawal (126-127, AS:CE) section of Scenarios (126-135, AS:CE) is used.
Additionally the following rules are used in the BTCC:
● Optional Special Abilities (82-91, AS:CE)
● Alternate Munitions (143-150, AS:CE): Please note that Copperhead, Inferno IV, Smoke,
Thunder, Thunder-Active, Homing Arrow IV, and Inferno(Bombs) are not allowed.
● ECM/ECCM (161, AS:CE)
● Practical Line of Sight (171, AS:CE)
● Understrength Formation: Under force construction rules you must field full formations. This
rule allows one of your formations to have less than its full number of units. Remember if you
have less than 3 units in the formation you do not gain the special ability for that formation.
Additional Materials
Players track damage and effects on AS Unit Cards. Players must bring the cards for their units to the
event. Players must have enough cards for every round of an event. Only the unit cards listed on the Master
Unit List (MUL) are considered official for a BTCC event.
In addition to their unit cards, AS players will need Templates for many of their weapons and Battlefiled
support and should have them readily available during the game.
Force List
For Alpha Strike (AS) games:
● Each player brings a single force list of 5 to 12 units to the event.
● When building an Alpha Strike Force, only use Steps 1-6. Step 7: Special Command
Abilities are not used for BTCC . Any faction or era may be chosen in Step 2 of this process.
When building formation, you must attempt to build a Company, Binary, or Level III (124,
AS:CE). This means any required formations must be selected as your first formation before
selecting optional ones.*
● The units in your Force list are bought using Points Value (PV) and may not exceed 500 total PV
for the whole force.
● You may only have three of the same chassis in your list regardless of the variant.
● No unit in your list may be Unique or have the Solaris VII tag.
● You must use canon units.
● All of your pilots must have a skill no lower than two (2) and no higher than five (5); 50%, round
up, of your units must have a skill of three (3) or four (4).
● As per step 6, Only one unit per 12 in your list may be assigned non-formation SPAs. SPAs for
this unit are assigned based on that unit's skill (92, AS:CE).
● You may spend no more than 5 BSPs (these are selected before each game begins).*
*See AS FAQ below for more information on building an AS Force.
Players select Battlefield Support and Alternate Munitions after determining attacker and
defender but before deployment. These selections can change from round to round.
the Scenario's will be:
First Contact
Take and Hold
Send them packing.

There are two groups on Facebook, one for general Battletech with pick-up games for Alpha Strike and events posted by our CDT Agents for all forms of Battletech.

The Calgary Battletech League which is its own thing also has a group and runs the aforementioned Discord related to the League though other events are posted there as well including affiliated games for the MRC.

September 9, 2pm

Playing at Ogre's Den, Calgary.

Force Construction
The default force size is between 5 and 12 units, with a maximum PV (including all Pilot Skill
and Special Pilot Ability upgrades) of 500. This provides a comfortable budget for generating a
Company-sized equivalent force. For a quicker game consider a PV limit of 350, with a
maximum of 8 units in each force. Whatever the game size you agree on with your opponent,
the following rules for force construction are strongly recommended, and should be followed
unless otherwise agreed upon with your opposition.
● All of your pilots must have a skill no lower than 2, and no higher than 5. (p. 29)
● At least 50% of your units (rounding up) must have a skill of 3 or 4.
● Step 1 through 6 of the Force Building rules should be followed. (p. 110)
○ Remember to choose units for your Force that are available to your chosen
Faction in the era of your choice (Step 2, p 110).
○ Players need not choose the same Era as their opponents, but they should
ensure that their Force is Era-appropriate as a whole.
● Per Step 6 of the Force Building rules, only a single pilot per Company (or Binary, or
Level III) may have SPAs assigned beyond those granted by a Formation.
○ The number and total point cost of those SPAs is limited by the pilot’s Skill Rating
(limitations described on p. 92. Skill Ratings defined on p. 29.)
○ Forces less than Company or equivalent strength may not select SPAs for any
pilots beyond what are granted by their chosen Formations.
● All units must be organized into Formations (Lance, Star, Level II, etc. p 116).
● Up to one of your Formations is allowed to field less than the required number of units.
○ Remember that formations with less than 3 units remaining generally lose the
benefit of their Formation.
● For games at or above 500 PV, your Force should be organized into a Company, Binary,
or Level III.
○ Ensure any required formations stipulated as a result are included in your Force.
(p. 124)
● You may not have more than 3 ‘Mechs or Combat Vehicles with the same chassis,
regardless of which specific variant is chosen.
● You may not select units with the Unique or Solaris VII tags
