Title: I just replayed Mechwarrior 2, Ghost Bear's Legacy ask me anything.
Post by: warriorsoul on 10 December 2023, 11:20:17
I probably haven't gone through this campaign in a solid 20 years. In some ways this feels like a hidden gem, in others it's frustratingly rushed and broken. "Raid on Jeannette" has this awesome color palette and you gotta deal with unusual IIC 'mechs and even a Stone Rhino. The Alshain missions always feel like the appropriate thing to play in winter/around Christmas.

But then you've got the dreaded "Underwater Strike" and the nail-biting finale against an orbital platform. Both of these needed a lot more playtesting and nothing in the campaign prepared you for jump-jetting your way through a small hole blown in a space station in zero G.

After 28 years a lot of the key-bindings don't work. If you're really serious about it, you probably want to rebind a custom configuration. Also, if you're trying to get to the Bloodname trial, you're gonna need to "Flee to Dos"/exit out of the game anytime you're about to fail a mission. Ghost Bear's Legacy tracks mission failures and this also applies to the Combat Simulator.

Back in my senior year (the year that I revisited GBL), I manage to unlock the Trial of Bloodright missions.  Yes I did the "flee to Dos/exit" method.  I still have my original copy of GBL from my childhood  azn

BTW, have you, by chance, own an USB numerical keypad?

I still have the original CD

Yes the space station, so needed more play testing haha, I liked the Trial of Position, as it was correct IC

I did the Trial of Bloodright, I thought that was a nice way to end

But I enjoyed it greatly, Mechwarrior 2 being my first game, I found the expansion to be amazing

Ghost Bear's Legacy seemed highly influenced by the Jade Phoenix Trilogy, with all the focus on superior officers being unreasonable, Bloodright Trials, etc.

What I remember clearly is that most missions can be solved with either a pair of Arrow IVs or a pair of UAC/5s (with lots of ammo).

Arrow IVS in both GBL and Mercs is an insta-win button regardless of difficulty.

In fact, just as a generalization, missile weapons in Mech 2 all tend to be somewhat unbalanced. LRM spam, infernos, Arrow IVs, they're all clearly OP compared to the other weapon systems except machine gun spam.

LRM spam for the bloodname! Lock on target, get behind a hill, lean back & fire upwards, and you were pretty much guaranteed an insta-kill.

Jeehun Hwang's soundtracks (for that, and for the original MW2) are still magnificent, and evocative.

Almost, in one GBL mission there is a Hellbringer, and in that game it has an AMS that works on Arrows.

You're talking about Raid On Jeanette, right?

Oh yeah, he's a legend, when I listen to them, still takes me back and is perfect, bam right back into the seriousness of MW2 that was the Refusal War and Clan Culture

Loved "Title theme" in the MW2 launcher button, and the actual track in game, other good ones were in the Falcon and Wolf Trials of Position

Falcon Colmar and Sudeten, really immersed you in it. Timothy Seals has done a remix too on all these tracks too, and plus made a few new ones of his own, inspired by Jeehun

Yup that's the one. I love that mission, there's a proper Hellbringer and it can shoot down your Arrow IVs. But this really doesn't stop you from obliterating the hard targets before they even have a chance.

Also what's up with the Incubi/Vixen on that map being so stubbornly hard to kill?
