I'll have the Perseus article up at sometime tomorrow... I need to work myself to mood to finish the article. Just don't be surprised if it will be a bit late even.

I've got the Jaguar article done. Hit a bit of a slow stretch at work and needed something to keep me busy. I can post that if you like.

Sure, why not. I'll get a bit more time to tweak the Perseus article.
Really difficult to get the tone right. My first attempt devolved to ranting... lol.

Might make this a 'Mech of the Midweek then, for the next week.

Is there some particular reason why Svartalfa doesn't have a ProtoMech of the Week article? Seems like it is the only one missing.

Not a clue and I know too little about the Proto rules to write an article about them.

I believe Greekfire was waiting for the recordsheet for the 2 variant to be released so ge could cover it as well.

Ah, very understandable.

I hope we get the RS soon so that Greekfire can also write about it soon, i like reading about ProtoMechs.

Protomechs are some of my favorite units.  It's kinda frustrating how little footprint they have on the game.

Kansas City players, or people who are just passing through the area, come join us at the Geekery just off Shawnee Mission Parkway for BattleTech!  Current days are Tuesdays in the afternoon and evening.  I can't make every single week, but odds are pretty good that somebody will be there.

During one of the Twilight of the Clans Novels, there is a scene where Sharon Bryan steals a bunch of blueprints from a lab or something (particularly on the Proto tech), and then proceeds to essentially burn the remaining data so others wouldn't get it.  So they had left the idea open that this was something that would spread.  But then Protos didn't exactly take off in popularity (in the real world), so I think they just kinda dropped that.

Protos are kind of an odd unit. They were intended to supplement the Jaguars' 'Mechs and the Jags lack of resources to produce 'Mechs in vast quantities. However, Protos have a very high level of technological sophistication that is required for their design, production, use, and maintenance. Typically, anyone that reaches such a high level of tech, has a wide resource base, it's almost impossible to get to that level without the resource base. The increase in resources almost always proceeds the increase in technology. To get to the point where Protos are viable you pretty much have to follow the Jaguars' path.

I would argue this applies to the Clan technologies as a whole really, i've always found the idea the Clans are resource-poor to be very odd given how much sophistication their technology (should) requires.
And perhaps we need to make a thread for discussing this in General Discussion, as this might be a rather interesting topic (as long as people can keep their heads cool).

If he wants to PM for the stats, I can dig those up in the meantime. I'm sure the sheer munchfactor is killing off the folks who attempt to put it into a RS format.

Yeah, the TRO entry said that the first time they were encountered in battle, they were making indirect-fire attacks from woods and the enemy force mistook it for a Kraken 3.

I would argue that the enthusiastic adoption of the ProtoMech by the habitually resource-poor Blood Spirits means that Protos are in fact less sophisticated and easier to manufacture than other Clan military hardware.  Otherwise, why would one of the poorest Clans adopt it as a primary weapon system?

The Smoke Jaguars 'perfected' (hah!) the concept, and once that proof of concept existed copying it was easier than starting from scratch, especially for resource poor Clans.

The fact that EI is still a ticking time bomb and psychological death-sentence limits it to a significant extent, which is annoying because you'd think after almost a hundred years they'd have figured out how to make Protos less self-crippling with "improved EI" or "improved Protomech cockpit" or something.

I'd say that proto's were more a development of necessity.  That they managed to get the system working in so short a time is pretty darn amazing.  And whilst EI tattoos were a time bomb and would probably make a warrior be catatonic or insane by 35, in the Clans thats fine, its a case of  "at 35 you're solhama so who cares about you, just go out and die in a useful manner please."

Except for the part where being Solahma at 35 is the closest thing to an informed attribute as we've ever gotten from the Clans.  Go take a catalogue of Clan characters and you have dozens, frequently the best and brightest, coming into their prime in their late 30s.  Aidan and Marthe Pryde were 38 when the Invasion started.  Ulric Kerensky was 53.  Lincoln Osis was 36.  Natasha Kerensky was over 70.  In the Dark Age, Malvina Hazen is 42 in 3145.  Anastasia Kerensky is 44.

It was interesting when the Clans were introduced.  Since then, it has become less and less relevant until most Clan characters worth caring about are past the supposed Solahma age by a decade or more but are just as if not more dangerous than they were in their youth.

The one thing that I'll point out that all those characters have in common is a Blood Name.  It's always been the case that Blood Named warriors were considered worth keeping around, it's the ones who didn't (AKA the vast majority of warriors) that were supposed to be put out to pasture.  And if they were impressive enough (like Joanna or Horse), they could avoid that fate for quite some time, too.

Bloodname and rank, help stave off solahma for longer. Which makes perfect sense in the "might makes right" attitude of the Clans. If a warrior is able to earn a Bloodname and high rank, they typically have the skills to hold off any challenges related to their age. Lower ranked warriors (having never earned rank or having lost it) have shown that over the years the newer, younger warriors are out-performing them, thus they are deserving of being solahma.
