Soccer practice this morning wasn't any fun, what with subfreezing temps and biting wind to boot.  Could be a lot worse though.

I used to think I couldn't function on less than nine hours.

Basic training and then kids swiftly disabused me of that notion....

Dav

Oh, I can make it on less than eight hours of sleep...it's convincing my brain to fall asleep before midnight that's gonna be a real pain. But hey, I had a job once where I had to be up at 4:45 five days a week...if I can do that, I'm betting I can do this.

Yes. I dunno, like 6" or 8"  snow and cold as hell.
We're at the bottom of the snow/rain line so 1-3" locally.  The cold comes tomorrow.  Yay?

It's cold here, but not crazy cold. Let's see what the future holds...more of the same, it seems.

7AM is civilised? By what unholy standards?! :o

I don't know: when I was more hopeful, five in the morning was absolutely beautiful especially when the sun rose. Now . . . I'd rather not talk about it.

with the number of friends and neighbours I have who have gone to Arizona for the winter, I dare say we do migrate, at least some of us. Me, I'm too busy saving up to go to Texas in the spring to head south now

Not civilised... just more civilised than 5 AM, my usual start.

Woke up at 6.30 this morning, discovered that my house was in an area covered by a high-risk flood warning, and that houses in the estate on the other side of my road were being evacuated ahead of the highest anticipated tide in 17 years as a result of all the rain water in the area over the last week or so.

No sign of water rushing across the streets and the high tide is past now, but I was wondering how quickly I could relocate 20 boxes of comics up a flight of stairs. Two or three more high tides of concern due over the next 36 hours, apparently... but it's looking less likely that the Usk is going to burst it's banks near me. The Severn has just burst it's banks near Minsterworth though, and roads near where I work are badly flooded.

It's typical Welsh weather outside - I'm trying to decide whether a triple sausage baguette and a couple of week's worth of comics are worth venturing outside for, given that I could sit in my nice warm house and try working on that dratted Pacific Rim vid instead...

It's more interesting than optimal, and therefore better. O0 - Weirdo

I'm about to be starting an externship on Monday that will have me getting up at 5:45 AM Monday through Wednesday and then on Thursdays and Fridays I get to sleep in an hour before eight hours of classes. If none of you have heard from me a month from now, I've likely died of sleep deprivation.
I don't know that word, but hearing it makes me glad to be middle-aged.

Meh.  I manage when working or studying on about 5-6 hours a night.  I'm a night owl, I cannot
go to bed at 10pm or something.  It's just not possible for me to go to bed any earlier than say
12 or 1 ish.  But I catch up at weekends, so I manage.

Even so, I shuddered reading that Kojak.

Y'know for all the negatives living in CA has (higher than average taxes on EVERYTHING, Traffic, etc...) working in the garage this weekend wearing sandals, shorts and a t-shirt is pretty great for january. Low here is like 38 degree's. :)

Currently I am thankful for:
1) the Gulfstream
2) Amazon for getting books for my MSc
3) online journal access via remote access from my university's library for my MSc

Oh I am having to use annual leave to do the preparatory reading for my MSc module but I can survive that as I've got no money to go away on my annual leave!

It's in the low 20s F here.  Windchill means it feels like the high single digits.  My HC will probably wimp out and cancel soccer practice this afternoon, which is too bad, since I was looking forward to the whining from our entire team this afternoon after school.  We told them yesterday to bring their warm clothes. >:D

I know we've had lower temperatures occasionally in the past, but this is about as low a specific temp as I can remember recently.  We don't hit the teens much.

It doesn't get that cold usually. The last time it got this bad (wind chills enough to cancel school across Minnesota) was 1996.

The record low in my current city St. Cloud is only -43 F, and the state is -60 F. The CONUS record is -70 F, set in Montana up in the mountains.

Where GS lives, recent record lows are -27 F, where you don't need that feature on a daily driver.

The all time record low in Arkansas is -29F, and that was way up in the northwest corner, not so far from 97jedi in SW Missouri.  The January average low down in the central part of the state, closer to where I'm at, is just below the freezing mark, at 31F.  So the fact that its supposed to bottom out at 17 this morning is....worrisome.

For reference, the state record high is 120F, and the central portion of the state averages a daily high over 90F throughout July & August.  Its glorious.
