I think the best battlemech to teach is the catapult since it has medium lasers which is a staple weapon and LRM's which teach the cluster table. What battlemech should I choose to teach against a catapult?

Thunderbolt.

Same tonnage, and you can also teach heat management.

Catapult vs Thunderbolt is a solid match, albeit the jump-jets on the Cat give it an edge. It's more forgiving than the Tbolt, that way.

The ShadowHawk SHD-2H (bv: 1,064) Vs. The Wolverine WVR-6R (bv: 1,101) I'd say would be a pretty decent beginning game.
