Hex Hills
« on: 02 August 2016, 14:11:00 »
I just finished my first batch of foam hills. I'm fairly happy with the way they turned out. My only issue was when I clear coated them it caused the undercoat of paint the be exposed on some of the edges. I'm sure it's an easy fix if I glue some extra flock on those spots.

All of these, except the level one hill, are based on hills from various BT map sheets.

Very sleek and elegant. What kind of foam did You use? No problems with reaction to paint?

Thanks! I used 1" pink foam from Home Depot and cut out the shapes with a bandsaw. I think the coloured layers of paint protected the foam from melting when I sprayed on the clear coat. One of the hills had a felt spots where the spray caused some melting but nothing major. Not sure why it happened to just one and not all the rest. There must have been a few tiny missed spots when I painted it that left the foam exposed to the clear coat.

Very cool, I'd use them. Good to know the aerosol ( mainly the solvents in it ) didn't melt the styrene in this case.

All of these, except the level one hill, are based on hills from various BT map sheets.

Top right:  Rolling Hills 1 (top right)
Top left & Middle Center:  Battletech (bottom right)
Middle left & Bottom left:  Battletech (top right)
Bottom Right:  Rolling Hills 1 (middle left)

How'd I do?

Ryumyo, just make sure that the painting is covering the foam completely. I had one hill where a few tiny spots that didn't get good coverage and there was some minor melting as a result.

Top right:  Rolling Hills 1 (top right)
Top left & Middle Center:  Battletech (bottom right)
Middle left & Bottom left:  Battletech (top right)
Bottom Right:  Rolling Hills 1 (middle left)

How'd I do?

Those are all correct! In addition, the large two level hill in the bottom right is from Rolling Hills #2
