Just for fun, checked how well fuel-cell engines improved it. Optimal weight is a tad higher, which allowed me to increase cargo capacity by 25% and add enough armor to survive a Gauss Rifle shot from any angle (though you have to pray crits don't get you). Those things sure are game-changers.
