Weight determination for a Battlemech lance (melee) weapon
« on: 04 November 2019, 10:45:10 »
Hi

Not sure if this is the best forum to post in so thats in advance to anyone that can point me to the right place.

Per Tac Ops p. 288 - says a Lance weighs 1 ton and occupies 1 critical slot for every 20 tons of ‘Mech weight (rounded up to the nearest half ton).

If I read it right, for a 45 ton mech - 45 ÷ 20 = 2.25 which would round up to 2.5 tons.  I notice in the 3055 Upgrade, the Volkh VKH-1's lances weigh 3 tons each. I wasnt sure if the TRO has a typo and I didnt see this in the TAC Ops errata, unless I overlooked it.  I tried to look at TRO entries for other mechs carrying them but not many "base" model mechs carry them .

Thanks

Unless there was a previous errata from an older version of TO it does appear the Volkh is underweight by 1 ton.  The only other mech i can think of right now that has a lance is the Ti Ts'ang, but there are no issues at all with its weight.

it appears based on other canon units not evenly divisible by 20 like the Mantis L (30 tons), Nyx 90 (30 tons), Ryoken III-XP D (55 tons), and Hachiwara 6P (70 tons) that the weight and size of the lance is rounded up to the next 20 ton increment. unsure if that's how it's supposed to work based on the wording in TO, but that's certainly how it's done in practice

That's almost always how rounding gets done when it comes to things that have variable mass, like targeting computers.

Here is the wording directly from TO:

Quote
Lance: A Lance weighs 1 ton and occupies 1 critical slot for every 20 tons of ‘Mech weight (rounded up to the nearest half ton). Lances may only be mounted in a
’Mech’s arms. Installing Lances does not require a hand actuator to be located in the same arm, but arms intended to use Lances must have shoulder, upper and
lower arm actuators.

What I highlighted in red is what causes the confusion.  It sounds like it ought to say rounded up to the next nearest full ton or something to that effect.

Sounds like a rules question that could lead to an errata...

Yup, definitely seems to be a discrepancy between wording and practice

So, should this be cross-posted to BattleTech Game Rules Questions »Tactical Operations, or will it get an official answer from here?
