There are always those two mechs that end up fighting each other more than once, like Timberwolf and Summoner, or Battlemaster and rifleman, or Griffin and Shadow Hawk. What two mechs do you think make great rivals on the battlefield?
-
Archers vs Warhammers.
-
Mad Cat versus Vulture
Mad Cat versus Mad Cat Mk IV (Just ask Anastasia Kerensky about that one)
Hellstar versus everything that has ever existed in all time and space
Iguan versus Godos
-
Here's another one I've encountered; Penetrator versus Falconer. I've discovered that asking which is better is a good way to start a war.
-
Archers vs Warhammers.
That was my first thought, too. In the first (3025 era) game I ever played, my buddy had a lance with two archers and two warhammers. I decided to go with a "Heavy cav" lance with two trebuchets and two ostrocs.
Yeah, that ended well for me. Not. :D

That is actually how the FedCom Civil War started. Katherine was pro-Falconer and it all went downhill from there.
-
Well, there always is the Shadow Hawk vs. Wolverine vs. Griffin Debate.
I personally prefer the Wolverine myself O0
-
Behemoth vs. Blood Asp
That's a ton of weaponry flying around!
-
The Thug vs. Warhammer is one mentioned in the fluff for the Warhammer.
-
Wasp vs Stinger :D
It's as much fun to watch as a MIT slap-fight.
-
Marauder/Warhammer
? ? ?/Kerensky
Sunday only at the Boreal Reach Stadium.
See the undisputed heavy-weight champeens of the Inner Sphere duke it out to determine who will be the Ultimate Heavy-Weight Champeen of the Universe in this ultimate grudge match between the Black Widow and the Bounty Hunter!

Battlemaster vs. Rifleman? Pfffff. Never seen that one. You'd expect the Rifleman pilot to have some sense and go back to shooting birds.
-
Panther vs. Wight.
^-^
-
Here's some of mine:
Kit Fox vs Centurion
Dragon vs Centurion
Timber Wolf vs Atlas
-
Panther vs. Wight.
^-^
Pretty one-sided for a rivalry. :-P

My buddy has been using one that I gave him to get him in the game. He's gotten quite lucky with it in the past. Twice we've fought, each time one of us comes left victorious, either by his mech shutting down right in front of my Battlemaster, or the Battlemaster has a different pilot because of faction affiliation and was green, and got smacked around. It's odd I know, but it's what I got from it.
-
Victor vs Hatamato Chi (Or any Hatamato) Likely happened a few times.
-
Vindicator vs. Enforcer
A classic rivalry.
-
Wolfhound vs Panther
Dervish vs Trebuchet
-
Wolfhound vs Jenner
Orion vs Zeus
-
Thunderbolt vs other 3025 heavy 'Mechs
Thud wants to know why he never gets to be the hero
-
There's also the all-time classic Panther-Valkyrie matchup, or the Jenner-Wolfhound fights.
Also considering how prevalent they apparently are in the early sourcebooks, Archer-versus-Archer probably happened a lot, as well as Stinger-Wasp-Locust battles in pretty much any manner you like. Two hundred thousand Stingers and even more Wasps than that...
-
Battleaxe vs. Warhammer. That one's explicitly canonical, if pretty one sided.
-
UrbanMech vs Locust. Not as one sided as one would think.
UrbanMech vs the world. It's the Rodney Dangerfield of BattleMechs, but don't say that to its front arc.
-
Hammerhands vs Battleaxe with nether surviving the Warhammer.
3025 Dragon vs 3025 Zeus; while never written in the fluff, I always thought it was odd both mechs shared a similar weapons profiles (AC/5s, LRMs, Lasers) The Zeus has more firepower and armor but the Dragon has speed while both serve as proud symbols of their great house military power.
Centurion vs Dragon; same reasons as above.
3025 Commando vs Panther vs Valkyrie, above.
-
Thunderbolt vs other 3025 heavy 'Mechs
Thud wants to know why he never gets to be the hero
Because nobody likes the Thud.
-
Stalker vs Awesome
Grasshopper vs Guillotine
-
Because nobody likes the Thud.
My favourite 3025 mech.

My favourite 3025 mech.
Favorite among players yet passed by almost every writer as a ride for the main character.

There were a couple of notable Thunderbolt pilots: Patrick Kell and Maeve Wolf were both featured in novels. Also Hans Vordel, who is not a main character, but appears in the novels as well.
But I see your point. And it is of note that the Thunderbolt is indeed often absent in the old (unseen heavy) books not just as a hero Mech but also as opposition.
-
Goliath vs. Snowspeeder...particularly when they have those tow cables.
Seriously, though, Goliath vs. Valkyrie, given what happened to Cochrane's Goliaths.
-
Battleaxe vs. Warhammer. That one's explicitly canonical, if pretty one sided.
Along those lines, you also have the Dragon vs. the Shadowhawk and Quickdraw vs. Rifleman vs. JagerMech.
-
You know I am surprised that no one has mentioned the other hammer rivalry: the Hammer vs. the Valkyrie. The Hammer Light-mech was built by Free World Defense Industries on Gibson to compete against the Corean Enterprises' Valkyrie. And this one has a clear winner since the Hammer's production lines along with most of Gibson got glassed by the Regulans, and to my knowledge, no one has resurrected the Hammer.
-
This isn't a classis rivalry but as other people are sharing their own personal rivalries I'll share mine.
My friend Clint used to be a big awesome fan. Back in the day we played ... The only way you can have a mech is if you salvaged it or bought it with c-bills or traded for it. Well I got my hands on a Penetrator. His awesome was full of clan tech that we had salvaged...clan pulse lasers, targeting comp etc. The thing was a nasty beast.
Well I kitted out my Penetrator with a few clan tech things I had salvaged. Just erppc's and some extra HS's. Turned out that was just what I needed. I beat him 12 straight games headcapping him within the first 4 rounds.

I don't reall see that as a rivalry, though. The Hammer was never widely exported outside of the League, and the Valkyrie comprised a hefty percentage of the Davion light 'Mech forces for centuries. Sure, Corean built it, but it was Corean on New Avalon, not Corean on Stewart, so as far as I'm aware, the two were never really placed in opposition to each other.

Pheonix Hawk (3025) vs Maruader (3025)
Throw in a crappy love story, tons of legal proceedures, and you have a great battle. LOL!!!
-
Jagermech vs Loki
And in my experience the Jagermech came out top more often.
-
Along those lines, you also have the Dragon vs. the Shadowhawk and Quickdraw vs. Rifleman vs. JagerMech.
The Jagermech vs Rifleman always made sense to me, the Quickdraw vs Rifleman fluff not so much.
You can kinda connect the dots on how the Shadowhawk inspired the Dragon (LRMs, AC5, Med Laser)
-
My favourite 3025 mech.
Seyla O0
I can remember taking on my mates TBolt waaay back in the day and being utterly torn to pieces.
During the Luthien campaign I am playing, we have seen a lot of Summoner vs Archer battles. The Draconis side has an elite Archer MechWarrior who sits back in cover and rains fire. I have a veteran Summoner MechWarrior who is tasked with jumping through all that terrain to get to him, stick within minimum range and give him hell.
Other than that, Cougar Primary vs Adder Primary. The Cougar has the same average damage potential, slightly better chance to hit with a wider spread of damage, slightly better heat control but slower. The Adder has that PPC knock out punch and targeting capability. Old faithful vs the stylish new upstart ;D
-
Crusader vs Tbolt
Wight owns panther!!!
Orion Vs Zeus
-
Wright owns panther!!!
You mean Wight? Of course it does, it's a heavily upgraded Panther.
-
Wight is a cool mech
-
Even though it wastes too much tonnage on that compact engine. ???
-
I once had a series of interesting battles between a Clan Warhawk/Masakari and a Templar
-
Stalker vs Awesome
Grasshopper vs Guillotine
Never did 'hopper versus Guillotine. Did do the'hopper versus a battlemaster. Didn't turn out well for the bmaster.
-
Archer vs Warhammer is my favorite. That was one my first battle ever in battletech.
-
Thunderbolt versus Loki.
Battlemaster vs zeus,or atlas.
Maruader vs Warhammer though takes the title. my first game
-
Maruader vs Warhammer though takes the title. my first game
I gotta agree with Marauder vs Warhammer .
That's one of the all time classic fights .
-
Yen Lo Wang vs Legend Killer 8)
-
UrbanMech running vs. pavement hex.
Just legendary.
-
UrbanMech running vs. pavement hex.
Just legendary.
ROFL
-
Grasshopper VS guillotine always comes out in a wash for me. can go either way. I do say the Srm 6 on the guillotine , does act as a good equalizer. Now if its a 5n Hopper with the PPC, still equals out.
Shadowhawk VS wolverine .
Falconer VS Summoner. its a jumping slug match.
Centurion VS enfocer.
Wasp vs Stinger
-
Thunderbolt vs Crusader is the one I always think of. It was one of the introductory fights in the 3rd edition book.
-
Never did 'hopper versus Guillotine. Did do the'hopper versus a battlemaster. Didn't turn out well for the bmaster.
Who ever was piloting the battle pimp was a nub.
