A big part of that was because Al really didn't mock the people he was doing parodies of, most of the time.  There's only been four times that he's actually directly poked fun at the artist he was parodying: Lady Gaga with Perform This Way, Nirvana with Smells Like Nirvana, Billy Ray Cyrus with Achy Breaky Song (which he stopped performing on the grounds that the song was actually a little mean), and Billy Joel with the unreleased Still Billy Joel To Me (which he didn't release because he felt that it was definitely too mean).

Al thought that Coolio had given permission to do the parody (it had actually been one of the recording studio's agents), and Coolio has since apologized for blowing up at Al over it.

From what I heard Coolio did give permission - legally speaking.  But it still hit him wrong.  And it may have just been his management that made the decision and he was just screwed.  That happens a lot.

I def don’t see Al being at fault, or Coolio, for that matter.  It’s a matter of taste and decisions we wish we had back.  He may have overreacted, but yes, at least he sees that and let Al know it’s ok.
