Weird magnetic fields question
« on: 03 May 2023, 12:57:37 »
So here's an odd one, and my knowledge of magnetism doesn't cover this:

I've got a toy AT-TE(a squat six-legged mech, for those who don't know/don't feel like googling it) that I'm trying to magnetize so that it can be used as a fridge magnet. The feet already have holes in them and I've got small rare earth magnets that fit just fine. My question is, will the magnetic field be stronger if I align all six magnets in the same direction? Would it be better to alternate, or does it make absolutely no difference? I've only got the forward pair of legs magnetized so far, and those are lined up the same way.

If you really want to be sure you could always do some science by putting the magnets close to the edge of the fridge surface so that they are easy to remove and see if alignment matters.

It depends on how close the feet are and how strong the magnets are.  If the feet are far enough apart, it won't matter at all.

Does it slowly slide off of your fridge?  I use magnets to hold up my dish towels and a cloth map of Ireland; both, slowly slide down the fridge-wall.

Modify:  Also, I was thinking of a magnetar, a pulsar-star with so much magnetic-force, it would rip a person to pieces: too much magnetism?

I'm not going to dig up enough of my books to do field modeling, so you're getting the simple version. If they're close enough to interact, the fields get stronger if they're aligned. If they aren't close enough, alignment means nothing to the surface you stick them too. Assuming you're putting them in the bottom of the feet, aligning the magnets should produce anywhere from a null effect to an increase in attractive force.

Bear in mind that I'm a geologist, and my magnetic fields are normally a couple of magnitudes off from this. Trust literally anyone else for the small scale induced field stuff.

Long before you get close enough for that, the radiation will have flash-fried then evaporated you, methinks.
