Still working on it on and off, but I'm leaving it to fester a little before I consider completely redoing the pic.

I'm guessing that trooper in progress is the result of that 'concept sheet' that had different kit designs from the last iteration of the forums?

That'd be a negative. Completely new, with my own take on some of the gear.

Not exactly CBT, but a character portrait that I'm working on...

Inspired by the FN SCAR?

Before you go any further with this one, I'd suggest brushing up on color theory and taking a closer look at fair complected skin.

The number one mistake people make when coloring a portrait is picking a single fair-tannish color, and then choosing a darker value to shade. 99% of the time, a person is not the color you think they are, and you can't find the color you need in a swatch.

Heh. Actually, the shading tones are not just darker, but evidently need to be more varied. :-[

Hm, I think this is another one those times where I need to just paint what I mean. I'll make more sense then.  :-\

Both! I'd suggest doing them separately, though, if you do digital. Unfortunately, if there's a good way to "glaze" digitally, I don't know what it is.

I won't nitpick too much [yet], but I believe the lighting of the eyes is off. Usually, the lightest part of the iris is opposite the shine on the surface of the eye. Remember, the cornea is convex, and the iris sits under it.

Heh, actually, that's just how my eyes usually wind up being rendered. It's a bad habit carried over from my pencil work that I need to break.

I know, desaturated pictures are in this year, but I just thought I'd map my progress with something more colorful:

Please note that most of what you're seeing is very symbolic and will be replaced as I continue working on it.
