Tribble 557

Somewhere, sometime in the distant future, Above Terra aboard the Vengeful Spirit.

He was so tired, so spent, so devastated. In mind, body and spirit, his favored son, now no more than a dark shadow of what used to be his physical frame was on the far bulkhead where his last, and desperate, rage filled psychic blast had destroyed him completely that not even his soul remained. The 4 had knows that he would not use his full power against him, had known and used it against him. For as he he had barely used half his power the 4 had instilled in his son such power as to be his equal in that state.
"So much more to do, so much more to have been done, all.... wasted" Barely a whisper but enough that his loyal bodyguards could hear with there trans-human ears. "My lord?" the worry clear in his voice. He could also sens one of his other, Loyal, Sons nearing him but still far to late to help him. He knew he was done, all his plans for the future all but naught. He could hear the 4, there mocking laughter in the back of his mind and even in the Sea of Souls.
This would not be the end of him, no, but he had seen this eventuality and knew that only the eternal throne awaited him now, with its power he may be able to come back from this, but only if placed into it soon. He could hear his Son now, his loud footfalls easy for all to hear. Yes, with him near he would come back. "NO! We will not allow this" He felt the Sea swell with power, "what more could the 4 do to him now? They are spent, just as he, from powering his son against him" he though. "Oh we can do plenty, though we cannot finish you we can still be rid of you and no more shale you bother us here!" With that he felt the gathering power, he felt the 4 use up the last of there combined power. He used what little he had left to defend himself but they did not attack, no, far to late he realized just what they had in mind as there was a bright flash and he felt himself, as if water to a drain, slipping to somewhere .... else. He could just hear his son "Father! Nooooooo.....". He could just make out his sons figure running twords him. What will they do now? He wondered, as his mind went blank and felt his soul and body slip away into the warp and beyond.

   Jumpship Alestro
   June 4, 3015
   New Earth

You could hear the screams down the hall as well as the doctor steadying them all in the micro-gravity. Why could this woman just hold on for just 5 more days until they landed on Earth! The doctor thought. They had no time to travel back ground-side and so were making the jump to Earth to ASAP to get proper treatment and delivery but no, the baby would not wait and suddenly, just as they got the 5 30 minuet warning the contractions had started.
"30 seconds to jump", the captains voice laced with a bit of worry for this passenger. Already he could feel the baby starting to come out despite his best wishes or the danger of giving birth mid jump, he would not abandon his duty's.
"just hold on, breath and push, breath and push" The woman gave me the death glare, "what do you think im doing!" in between clinched teeth and screams. Then just as the baby was about to take its first scream it happened, they jumped.
Normally a jump is supposed to be instantaneous, usually passengers feel like something between eternity and moments for the jump to complete but now, it felt like it went on forever. They could all hear... something in the background, snickering, arguing, maniacal laughter, they did not know but just as they thought they would be able to tell what it was the jump ended and they reentered reality with a bang. He barely had time to blink when he was tossed into a wall, the whole ship seemed to lurch and they could hear the ship creaking as well as a distant boom, probably the battery's dying he thought.
He looked down at his arms and the baby was, oddly, very quiet, just staring at him, with a very piercing gaze. He stared back for but a moment until he remembered about the mother, also oddly quiet but quickly found out why. She was against the far wall, head angled all the wrong way. When the ship lurched she had stayed where she was in the micro-gravity and the wall had slammed right into her head. At least it was quick the doctor thought solemnly. He looked down into his hands again at the baby protectively wondering what to do next.
just as the doctor looked down at him the second time He was coming back to a weak cognition and stared at the giant that was holding him. No this was no giant.. I am... tiny! He realized. He dipped slightly into the Sea and found it calm beyond measure and as the realization hit him that he was not where he used to be He thought to himself. In both sadness at what had been left behind but also in hope in what could be. "I will miss you my Sons and friends, luck to you. For that matter, luck to me as well" and with that last thought he resigned himself to the betterment of mankind in this reality.

This is my first real in depth though, can any of you figure out what or who I was talking about? Points for those who can and how do you think things would turn out this way instead? If you are still lost as to some of the characters just ask and I will answer.

God Emperor of Mankind from Warhammer 40K reincarnating into Battletech?

Tribble 558

In 3000 Khan Nadia Winson of Clan Ghost Bear proposed to the Grand Council that the Clans should return to the Inner Sphere. The motion was opposed by Khan Kerlin Ward of Clan Wolf, who proposed as a compromise that a scout force be sent to the Inner Sphere to determine what they would face if they returned in force. After a great deal of debate, the motion was voted on and (inevitably) a Trial of Refusal was fought. The outcome was that the Clans would indeed return to the Inner Sphere. The Crusader faction had won.

The question of how they would return was the next to be decided. A leader was needed and Nadia Winson's prestige in securing the vote made her selection as ilKhan a simple choice. After discussing the issue with a number of her allies, she proposed a conservative and inclusive plan in keeping with the Ghost Bear's usual caution: all seventeen Clans were to prepare a force of around five galaxies divided between frontline and garrison forces in whatever proportion they found preferable. Each Clan must contribute at least five small warships and one large warship as escorts and to carry a reserve of supplies. If a Clan's forces made this difficult they were welcome to activate cached warships and each clan was to provide a pool of supplies and cached equipment into a general pool the ilKhan could disburse in order to support a Clan that had difficulty participating.

While several stronger clans felt this was unnecessarily generous, this tithe wasn't very heavy and the votes of the smaller Clans were valued even if their fighting power wasn't. The only serious dissent came from a hard core of Wardens, primarily the Clans Kerlin Ward was able to strongarm: his own Wolves, the Coyotes and the Goliath Scorpions. These three Clans declared they would not invade, which was accepted as long as they paid the same tithe and agreed not to prey upon the homeworld enclaves of the fourteen invading Clans. All three Clans were noted to be increasing their secondline forces, which they explained as needed to deal with an expected upswing in banditry while the other Clan's best warriors were away. They also allowed some of these units, staffed with their Crusader minority, to be claimed by the invaders - although most of these Crusaders were disappointed to learn they were only going to be guarding supply lines or even filling out homeworld garrisons.

After years of preparation the invasion force set out - seventy galaxies of warriors and eighty-four warships, arguably the largest single military force deployed by any part of humanity since the First Succession War. In 3005 they reached the Inner Sphere and Kerensky's heirs were unleashed upon the Inner Sphere with devastating effect. Despite valiant efforts, the Draconis Combine and Lyran Commonwealth were almost entirely unable to to hold back the Clans, even with covert aid from an increasingly worried ComStar. Coordinator Takashi Kurita died fighting a stubborn and glorious defence of Luthien, inspiring thousands of Combine samurai to fight to the bitter end and millions of humbler Combine citizens to resist in their own ways. Archon Katrina Steiner bled the Clans over and over in scores of brilliant ambushes that ground away their fine edge and the expense of almost entirely destroying the LCAF. After two years of war, the Clans had almost reached Terra, and despite their losses they remained a powerful force. With their supplies depleted, they paused briefly to regroup and await convoys from the Homeworlds.

But these convoys did not arrive.

Waystations ceased to report and HPG connections to the homeworlds fell silent.

Kerlin Ward had known exactly where the bases were and where the convoys would be. And the three Clans had only promised to avoid targeting the homeworld enclaves. Unobserved in the frenzy of the invasion, fast squadrons had ranged after the invasion and in a single month they took control of the key links connecting the invaders to their homeworlds. And it took precious time - almost another three months - for this to become clear, with a Cloud Cobra jumpship arriving to report of mass revolt on the Tanite worlds and a 'relief force' from the Wolves and Coyotes that simply seized and stripped the Cobra's remaining assets on the colonies.

Nadia Winson's native caution might have avoided the pitfall but angry Khans from almost every Clan forced her hand - a massive vote by the Council proclaimed the Wolves, Coyotes and Goliath Scorpions as dezgra. And the Wolves had seized the HPG links, not broken them. Cast out by the invaders they were no longer bound not to assail their enclaves... and their secondline forces had been expanded for two years as the other Clans exhausted themselves. Many of the garrisons facing them offered only token resistance, having been taken from these three clans to begin with or resenting being left behind by their peers. Critical nodes of defense were seized first and resistance could not possibly be coordinated between more than a dozen Clans - especially as their relief were at least a year away.

The year is 3008. The Invading Clans, exhausted, stand on a precipice. Behind them they have their hostile brethern and a vast void separating them not even from fresh supplies and reinforcements but from homes that will be well prepared to resist their return. Ahead of them is a rough and ready coalition led by Ian Davion, Janos Marik, Maximilian Liao and the newly elected Julian Tiepolo - determined that they will not follow the Combine into annihilation or the Commonwealth into submission to their ancient FWL rivals by the sliver of worlds still free to follow Katrina Steiner.

And all around the Clans lies their occupation zone, not a proud and shining new Star League but bitter and resentful conquered provinces, barely garrisoned and ready to turn knife, gun or improvised explosive device against any Clan warrior who lowers their guard.

The Crusade is over. Now the battle for survival begins.

The Clans failed.  Of course the Clans failed.  Caste systems do not innovate.  Caste systems imposed on free men breed rebellion.  Laborers murder warriors in their beds.  Warriors slaughter technicians in job lots in retaliation and everything collapses far faster and more completely than in the Inner Sphere.  Space flight was entirely lost.
Only the somewhat more timely than OTL arrival of the SLS Manassas in the late 29th century saved civilization in the Kerensky cluster and saved is a bit optimistic.  There are mothballed ships in orbit and older mechs in non-planetary Brian caches the warriors didn't get around to using up before losing spaceflight, but the infrastructure was all squandered.  Help is needed from the Inner Sphere.  With nothing else to offer they send an expedition under Jaime Wolf disguised as a mercenary unit.

This would focus on the early 31st century from the Dragoons viewpoint.  The disappointment of the Inner Sphere not having what they need, the hope when the Helm core is found, and Holy Shroud III seeking to end the renaissance before it redevelops the civilian and industrial technologies the Dragoons were sent to retrieve.

Tribble 560

Shandra Noruff-Cameron was annoyed.  As if the stress of managing the war in the Periphery were not bad enough, other factors conspired against her.  Other factors like the man across the table from her.  It had been necessary to make concessions to the other Member States when it came to staffing new Star Leage trans-national bodies.  One of those, had been picking an Attorney General from outside the Hegemony, when the first had retired.  And the Free Worlds League had offered a man of incredible record and determination.  But the man was...difficult to work with.  Unpolitical, blunt...no, scratch the first.  He was intensely, fervently, political, and how could he not be, when he had spent the last 20 years fighting corruption and maleficence as fiercely as he had?  No wonder the Marrik family had been glad to see him go on to greater things- he must have seriously cramped their style.  And now he was cramping hers, with memo after memo about the conduct of the Star League Defense Force.  His last memo about General Forlough had contained seven exclamation marks.  She had hoped to help him see reason-but at this meeting, he had refused to listen to hints that he should drop the investigation or at least conduct it behind closed doors.

The man at the other side of the table looked up from his stacks of noteputers (why did he need so many of them?  How much paperwork did he collect?) and frowned at her.  He had frowned at her husband while taking the oath of office, but this was more personal.  "Am I boring you General?"
"No, you're not boring me.  You're exasperating me-you cannot seriously expect the Defense Forces and all the Member State militaries to open their files to you so you can conduct this ridiculous witch hunt."  She thumped the table for emphasis and stared him down.  "Your office's job is to investigate and prosecute crimes-why are you bothering me with this?"
"Six million dead civilians in the Outworld alliance and billions of dollars in destroyed property isn't a crime?"  The man flipped another noteputer so she could see the graphs and text.  "Rape and sexual assault rates through the roof in the Magistracy of Canopus, because soldiers expect a willing populace and aren't getting it?  I've got a list of atrocities as long as my arm against the Taurians, but I haven't been allowed to investigate the actions of our own units.  And there's a full-blown revolution in the Rim Worlds, but I'm inclined to write that off entirely."
"The Ares conventions have been suspended, and we have conducted operations with a firm but fair hand."  She had the same reports-the man had a gruff hard exterior, but he was as soft and naive as anyone she had ever seen.
"You still refuse to allow my investigators access to records or to inspect battlefields, however?"
"Yes.  You're outside your jurisdiction, and perilously close to losing your job.  Mind yourself, Vimes."

Vimes stood up and looked at the Black Watch guards in the room.  "Well Then.  General Commanding of the Star League Defense Forces, Duchess of New Earth, Barroness of Neuble Downs, Shandra Noruff-Cameron.  I hereby place you under arrest for conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and as an accessory to Crimes Against Humanity."  He picked up his cigar as the Black Watch shifted and raised an eyebrow at them.  "And if you lads try to stop me, it'll be Obstruction for you as well as resisting arrest."

You don't really believe that the entitled, powerful, elite of the Star League, follow the rules that they made, do you? That's for the peons. And anyone thinking differently, will learn they're entirely mistaken.   xp

For anyone else, sure. Vimes got taken off of the Nekekami and Thugee registers for being too essential to the ongoing smooth operation of humanity to risk killing. ;)

What, seriously? I'm stunned that anyone would be above those two. Well I bow to your greater Battletech knowledge. Still, I would be surprised if he actually managed to accomplish much, other than getting some of the smaller fish into prison.

This is actually intended to be Suffer-not-Injustice Vimes, a man similar to his descendant but far, far, more unconventionally named-though he takes his given name of Suffer-not-Injustice incredibly seriously.  Sam Vimes gets born just in time for the Glorious Revolution of the 25th of May to rock the double-planets of Ankh and Morpork when he's 16, sometime around the classic 3025 date.  Anyways, Suffer-not-Injustice is the Vimes known for standing up for his ideals, even when it gets him smacked down hard by the tides of history, and he at least gets to execute a king along the way.  This is a tribble though-I know how this story starts, but not how it *ends*, and you can of course have the younger Stoneface Vimes be the Vimes here depicted.

Tribble 561

Having endured the tedium of negotiating with Michael Hasek-Davion - if his military talent equalled his ego then the Confederation would have been doomed long since - Maximilian Liao prepares to leave Lee for Sian. It's 3022 and the Kaptyen Pact barely has the ink dry. Hopefully Hasek-Davion will be a more useful pawn than Anton Marik, he thinks.

Entering his limousine he's shocked to realise that his guards have all been replaced. MI4 agents smoothly deprive him of his personal papers and almost before he knows it, the Chancellor of the Capellan Confederation is in the hands of House Davion. A cursory check of the data shows that among the data the Duke of New Syrtis has provided are details of military deployments across the Capellan March - useful data for the Capellans since they have the Big MAC rampaging across the Federated Suns right now.

One can imagine Hanse Davion is smiling like a very well-fed fox when he gives his brother-in-law a choice: a trial for treason that would certainly see Hasek-Davion dethroned and probably executed... or claiming it was all an elaborate sting operation and handing the Capellan March over to Hanse's hand-picked agents and becoming a 'special advisor' to the First Prince on New Avalon for the next decade.

Michael, on the other hand, has no reason at all to smile. Nor does Maximilian Liao, who faces interrogation - which will reveal all sorts of interesting things about ComStar and the other Kapteyn states. And after that... well, he could be tried for espionage. Or perhaps simply given to Janos Marik in exchange for... considerations. The possibilities are almost endless.

Tribble 562

Nadir Jump Point, Strana Mechty
Kerensky Cluster, Deep Periphery
24 January 3051

Ranna gestured out of the viewport towards the star that the Dire Wolf had just jumped into high orbit of. Somewhere, millions of kilometres closer to that star, lay an inhabitable world although it was far too distant for the naked eye. "Welcome, Phelan, to Strana Mechty, the home of the Clans."

He blinked. "What, already? I thought it was hundreds of light years away from the Inner Sphere?"

"A little over a thousand, yes." She gave him a reassuring look.

The former-Kell Hound, then prisoner and now Wolf warrior-in-training shook his head. "But we've only jumped twice since Rasalhague. That's... that's impossible."

His companion nodded. "You must remember that our technology has moved on since the days of the Star League. We're no longer bound by the 30 light year limit of the jumpships you're familiar with. The Dire Wolf could have made it here in a single jump but the Veil of the Protector interferes in some way with jumps through it so we had to make a dog leg."

"..."

"Phelan?"

"If you can jump over a thousand light years at one time," he said slowly, "That's... incredible. It transforms the strategic situation."

"Yes."

"I thought your supply lines must be tying down hundreds of jumpships for months either way, but that's not the case."

"No, it's much simpler than that," she agreed cheerfully.

"Could I just ask though, if you can cross such massive distances, why do you bother fighting from one world to the next? Why not just go straight for the capitals?" The idea didn't particularly appeal to him - he'd rather the Clans didn't bring their war (or their warships) near Tharkad - but logically that would be the simplest way to win their Invasion.

It was Ranna's turn to blink. "Because that's how you war, isn't it?"

"Uh."

"I mean, that's how the Great Father defeated Amaris. So of course that's how we..." She trailed off as she saw him shaking his head slowly.

"Ranna, your people's eugenics must have bred up some incredibly brilliant scientists to come up with such impressive K-F drives," he said. "Did they ever consider including the same genes for intelligence in the warrior caste?"

The sound of his head bouncing off the bulkhead after Ranna punched him was clearly audible from outside the compartment.

I'm just imagining that the Clan scientists are the ultimate spindly nerds and the warriors are the meat-headed jocks. It would explain so much about the Clans. Thank you for this tribble. Really needed a good laugh.

Tribble #563

The year is 2815 and an elderly man lies dying in a palace on Luthien.

Fearing that he may linger in ill-health for weeks or months, depriving his empire of strong leadership, he signs a writ of abdication.

With tears in their eyes, the man's sons embrace him. Weakly patting them on their shoulders he tells them that they are Shiro and Urizen reborn, brothers bound by loyalty and duty, warlord and governor of the great dream of their House, and instructs them to see to their duties. He is content to pass alone so long as he knows that his duties are now in safe hands.

The elder son, by a full decade, emerges from the room as the 22nd Coordinator of the Draconis Combine, the Prince of Luthien and Unifier of Worlds. His name is Jinjiro Kurita, a general of unsurpassed genius. He is known for his ferocity in battle, his ruthlessness towards his enemies... but also for the deep love he has for his family. The Inner Sphere trembles at the knowledge that House Kurita's vast domain answers to this man.

The younger son is more noted as an administrator. He represents his aged uncle - more accurately his father's first cousin Chada. The last heir of the Kurita-Davion dynasty, Chada has adopted Zabu Kurita as his heir. It is already clear that Chada Kurita will not long outlive Minoru Kurita and on that day, Zabu will sit upon the throne of New Avalon as Prince of New Avalon ad rule the Draconis Combine's lesser, conquered, principality.

As the great conflict that will later be called the First Succession War grinds slowly towards a close, the Dragon continues to painfully digest the worlds that were once subservient to House Davion. It is a conflict to which Zabu is far better suited than his brother, calling for patience and flexibility... but it would be impossible without the iron legions of soldiers that have crossed the stars under Jinjiro Kurita's leadership. Those legions must now be replenished with volunteers from conquered worlds.

Compromises have been made. Civil leadership of New Syrtis District - the former Capellan March - is still invested in House Hasek. House Davion's lesser branches have been permitted - for now - to continue to rule over some individual worlds. Not of New Avalon, of course, but Chada has even permitted one descendant of Joseph Davion - the bastard-born Duke of Abbeville  - to survive in office. Some traditional freedoms have been removed but others have been assured, even tentatively extended to the citizens of the Luthien Principality in order to ease the economic strain of thirty years of warfare.

The two brothers look ahead not to the campaigns of the immediate future but further - to the war still to come once the Inner Sphere has begun to recover from the devastation unleashed from the fall of the Star League. Ten warlords are laying the groundwork for a new wave of conquests, rebuilding shattered regiments with the military production of a thousand worlds. The only question is where they will strike...?

The crumbling Capellan Confederation, the wealthy but soft Lyran Commonwealth, the pacifist Outworlds Alliance, the intransigent Taurian Concordat or their only remaining martial rival - the distance Free Worlds League?

The answer, these brothers know, is yes. What limit should constrain their ambitions?

Did the sniper miss on Kentares? Were the Davions still around or were they captured? I believe there are also Kurita-Davions running around too you could have placed on the throne too bud but this is very nice.

ComStar? The Clans? Who knows perhaps the Minnesota Tribe won its place with Nicholas' new society and will return at the head of a far different looking Clan force. ;)

Kentares is way too late a divergence point, there's no way the Fed Suns would collectively bare their throats and actively cooperate in the transition of power with the DCMS actions by that date. And that's what would in fact be needed for the FS to be conquered as a whole.

The latest butterfly I would plausibly buy is Minoru paying attention to the reports of how insanely beloved Kerensky was, not voting to remove him, and publicly castigating the other Lords for their shortsighted dishonorable actions. Cue the DC picking up a lot more of the SLDF, and the Fed Suns in turn taking in a lot less, so that among other things even if Cholame happens there's a big enough stick waiting that the Kuritans don't have to be their usual selves.

Earlier there are any number of possibilities, but the obvious butterfly would be Drago and family either escaping, or being confirmed dead immediately.

The Chada Kurita mentioned is the last of the Kurita-Davion descendants.

The rough background I went through was:

Minoru Kurita not assassinated so no Kentares Massacre, no boost to AFFS fighting spirit or demoralisation of the DCMS.

John Davion is still assassinated but Joshua Davion isn't with him. Joshua lives a couple more years and spearheads a third counter-offensive, conveniently timed such that it runs into the DCMS just after they've finished consolidating, resupplying and absorbing replacement troops (the FS intelligence community hasn't been reformed by this point). Like a good Davion prince Joshua is fighting right on the front and he ends up getting killed, which leads to the collapse of the offensive.

The DCMS pushes for New Avalon and arrive more or less the same time Paul Davion is crowned. Meanwhile a second DCMS thrust led by Chada Kurita goes into the Capellan March and runs into a Capellan push for Kathil, which they crush - 'saving' the worlds from House Liao.

While the Davion Guards and best of the other remaining regiments try to slow the DCMS tide, Paul Davion relocates as much of his government as he can. His brother Peter is killed fighting alongside other cadets during this evacuation.

Chada negotiates with House Hasek and offers them freedom to keep defending the Capellan March as long as they don't support Paul Davion. With John and Joshua failures and Paul not looking strong, the Haseks agree and Chada withdraws from the Capellan march in time to help Jinjiro fight for the other worlds in the Crucis March. Paul commits his remaining reserves to try to defeat Jinjiro's immediate command at Antietam and Chada arrives right on his heels, trapping Paul and his troops. For the third time in five years, a First Prince dies and there's another brutal defeat for the AFFS.

At this point the succession is contested - Paul's nearest relative is Mark Rand-Davion, who is barred from succession, then Chada Kurita(-Davion) who is also barred, and then a distant cousin from Beaumont. The High Council assembles to straighten out the succession and Chada puts forward his claim backed by the Haseks and with the additional benefit of some apparently generous terms to end the war with the Draconis Combine.

With hundreds of worlds occupied and the AFFS battered beyond belief, the High Council narrowly accepts these terms and Minoru approves the terms. Chada is First Prince, the DCMS withdraws partially (handing New Avalon over to the new First Prince) and gradually gives civil leadership for the worlds still occupied back (to some extent the DCMS is defending those worlds against the Capellans, which the AFFS can't manage yet. Chada begins reforming the government and spends years restructuring it and promoting compliant officials.

Most importantly, Chada recognises Minoru as First Lord and swears his fealty. After several years he formalises his reforms as a 'new principality' and merges the two realms (much as Rasalhague had joined the Combine ~300 years previous), although mostly the Avalon Principality is self-governed.

That sounds pretty good to me.

Don't I remember something about Steiner and Marik thinking of an alliance at the end of a Succession War? Not sure if that is the end of the 1st or the 2nd but the three remaining Houses may at least think of an alliance to stave off the Dragon and ComStar would probably foster any such talks.

Then again Liao already asked for an alliance with Kurita but was rejected out of hand. Perhaps now they would join the Greater Combine or the Second Star League as a client state. They'd likely ask for Chesterton in return if they hadn't taken it already by force.

So you could see the InnerSphere split into two different blocs at the start of a possible 2nd Succession War.

Like I said, Kentares is too late a divergence. By that point the Kuritans have been gleefully looting Inglesmond to death for the last seven years while nuking anything resembling resistance. Minoru has already thrown his tantrum and nuked Helm for not having loot. No one is going to believe the Kuritans are going to actually keep their word and not engage in widespread reprisals and atrocities the moment they think they can get away with it, or even just the moment they are mildly thwarted in orbit of a defenseless planet.

You say this as if House Kurita are the only ones using nukes like nutcrackers.

Given what we're told about the First Succession War, it's likely House Davion has been trying to use them against the DCMS... which in the circumstances means they've been using them tactically on Federated Suns worlds as well as hitting strategic targets in Capellan and Draconian space.

And Steiner. New Earth and Rocky saw some of the heaviest fighting of the war as even the Davies tried to get to Hesperus.

Context very much matters. Yes, armies have been throwing WMD at each other willy nilly, but the Kuritans at this point have an established history of continuing to do so against a defenseless target that didn't have what they wanted. And also of looting targets to the point where they can't sustain human life rather than any model of sustainable conquest.

By his past history about the only thing that might legitimately make them think Minoru won't level El Dorado if he makes a state visit and his tea is improperly served is if some enterprising soul managed to quietly abduct Jinjiro or Zabu and their families and threaten to send him back body parts of the terms of the merger aren't observed in every particular.

I believe you are mistaken consequences as Minoru did not butcher people sensely that was Jinjiro. I think u are confusing the two. Jinjiro went quite mad after Minoru was shot on Kentares and ordered that. Not saying Minoru was father of the year but in this alternate drakensis is saying that the AFFS was beaten. The nation surrendered rather than continue to fight. I am sure there is a resistance going on somewhere who ain't happy about it.

And with Minoru as Coordinator and the Federated Suns recognising him as First Lord and his cousin as First Prince, there is at least some reason to believe he won't treat them like Helm where they unreasonably didn't give him the supplies he was there for (not knowing where they were is no excuse of course). Not an unanimous opinion, of course.

And Jinjiro hasn't advertised his... Jinjironess yet.

Tribble no. 564:

"Shiva strike me down if I'm lying but when I heard Kevin Steiner standing up in the Estates General today, speaking with such passion, I almost felt myself waver.  Just a bit.  The man's a brilliant orator, after all, and clearly believed in what he was saying.  He did everything but break down in tears and beg us not to do it, not to dissolve the Commonwealth.  But at the end of the day all he could offer us were words.  Words won't put redundant taxes back in our pockets or spare us the overhead for complying with two sets of regulations instead of one.  Words won't spare us the consequences of bone-heads on Tharkad who value 'sovereignty' more than their subjects' wellbeing - we all remember, for example, the 'Dollar crisis' back in '23.   That type of overmanaging of the economy is permanently in the past, now.  And words won't save us from the Kuritans or the Free Worlders.

No, however eloquent Kevin Steiner was, there was never any real doubt  that we would win.  No doubt in my mind that we would embrace the beauty of a pure League, by, for, and of all humanity.  Yes, the vote in the Estates General was close, 161-160,  but the outcome was never in question.  I'm confident that more than a few delegates switched over to vote with Steiner once they knew Dissolution was going through so they'd have something to bargain for trade concessions with.  Steiner's still going to be a powerful man - he's got holdings on more than 50 worlds, and rules Tharkad outright.  A new age is dawning, golden and peaceful, and even those like Kevin Steiner who dread its coming will benefit.  I don't need to see a fist on a flag to feel safe.  None of us do.  All we need to know are these things...We are homo stellaris, citizens of the Star League, and that means we are free."

Interesting the breakdown of the Lyran Commonwealth presumably into its three component states (Donegal, Skye, and Tamar) could have profound consequences on the rest of the InnerSphere if it actually happens. The Free Worlds League could presumably dissolve into its individual Provinces as well touching off a splintering of the Star League. Rasalhague breaking away from Kurita is a lock and perhaps even the Capellan Confederation could dissolve as well contaminating the Federated Suns as well. Call it a domino theory of sorts. Not only could this cause a Civil War very easily in the Great Houses but it could tear down the Star League. I doubt every House Lord would go crying to the First Lord about insuring their succession which was a guarantee of the Star League but some would certainly. Messy!
