Sadly TRO: Succession Wars is possibly the worst product that has ever been produced for BattleTech simply on the basis that is is a literal copy paste of bit of other products that pretends to be a new product.

No it is not but given that the book it replaced (TRO:3039) took the time to rewrite a good cunk of the stuff carried over from earlier books. TRO:SW very disapointing in that it was a through and through copy/paste and generally far inferior to the book it replaced.

And in addition to the text not being even remotely updated, by the time TRO:SW was released, as the OP points out the carried over artwork was just over 30 years old and looks atrocious by the standards set by our own TROs from a couple of years earlier (TRO3150).

TRO:SW was not aimed at new players, it was aimed at making money from existing assets.

It didn't replace TRO 3039. It doesn't do remotely the same thing as TRO 3039. It's a compilation of mech designs intended to complement the battlemech manual, TRO 3039 covers a range of unit types and is intended to work with multiple core books.

I'm not trying to bait you, but we need to keep in mind that CGL is a business primarily.  They release products in order to make money.  And it's not like BattleTech is growing at a huge rate - outside of the box sets and now the Kickstarter, sales appear to be to a small and constant group.

The vast majority of BattleTech products are inside pool to some degree or other, for better or worse.  Every product is going to be made with the expectation that most if not all the sales are coming from existing fans.

note that "illustrated in detail" can also be (and usually is) a figure of speech meaning that it has been give extensive description. which the fluff, stats, and inclusion of info on variants and notable pilots certainly qualifies for.

Would "described in detail" be a better phrase to use if that is the case?
