New Clan AU (Work in Progress): The Dawn of the Clans
« on: 14 March 2011, 02:11:49 »
So, I'm taking a shot at this.  Here's what I have been writing so far...  Clan history is basically the same and this AU starts at the end of Operation: Klondike.  Since that, the programs you all know (like Eugenics) are formed and the Clans start to prosper.  All of the original Clans exist right now and have spread among the homeworlds, desputing territory, and expanding even more.

The Clans still plan on invading the Inner Sphere.  There will be differences in the Inner Sphere as well, they will be all introductory technology as well.  So, instead of the helm memory core and intro of Star League tech, there will be a big decline even further.  At that time I plan on having all Clans invade... not sure how that will end but I promise it will not be disapointing for both sides.

It is important to note the difference in everything is through technology which is all INTRODUCTORY TECHNOLOGY unless noted.  I plan on having this AU as something that you can run while owning the Introductory Box Set and TRO:3039.  There are some differences but the Clan and Inner Sphere essence will still be captured.

History

The Dawn of the Clans takes place in 2833 after the end of Operation: Klondike.  All history before 2823 is true only technology is replaced by Introductory equipment (as defined by the introductory box set, TRO:3039 and Total Warfare).  At this point, all Clans still exist and have spent 10 years expanding beyond the Pentagon Worlds and Homeworlds.  This document is a more in-depth look at the Clans and a supplement to the Introductory/25th Anniversary Box Set and TRO:3039.

The Clan Way
Society (The Caste System and Clan Mentality)

The Clans are the descendants of Kerensky and the true destiny of mankind.  Alexander Kerensky is the great father and his accomplishments are godlike.  His son Nicholas carried on his legacy in order to preserve the Clan mission:  To one day return to the Inner Sphere and restore the Star League.

In order to preserve this goal Nicholas Kerensky laid down the foundation and laws which the Clans must follow.  A vivid caste system was developed, with the Warriors on top of society supported by the other castes:  Scientist, Technician, Merchant and Laborer.

The Warrior Caste is the highest in Clan society.  They are the protectors and rulers of the other castes.  Trueborn Warriors, created by Clan Scientists in the Eugenics Program, make up the Caste with some Freeborn Warriors.  Freeborn are born the natural way, outside of the Eugenics Program, and are mocked by Clan Society due to their imperfection of a natural and chaotic birth.

The Scientist Caste performs all research and development so that the Clans can improve.  They create technology that Warriors can utilize and even work on improving the lifestyles of the lower castes.  These are our scientists, doctors, teachers and the trusted to work our Eugenics program to create our perfect Warriors.

The Technician Caste supports all other castes by repairing and maintaining the equipment they need to operate everyday.  They work on anything as complicated as Warships, OmniTech, to anything like basic noteputers and heavy machinery.  A lot of crew on Warships and Jumpships are Technicians.

The Merchant Caste is in charge or acquiring and manufacturing all equipment that the other Castes need to operate.  They are basically the economy.  One Clan, Clan Sea Fox, has actually placed more of a priority on the Merchant Caste.

The Laborer Caste is the lowest in society, however, they make up most of the Clan population.  They are the muscle behind the Clan operation performing all of the hard labor the other Castes do not.  They build structures, operate in warehouses, and even perform basic cleaning duties.  They are not the brightest but they are still essential in Clan operation.

Despite the importance of the other Castes some Clan Warrior Castes actually look down upon them.  This is usually due to underperformance that may hinder the Warrior’s ability to enter combat.  For example, a Technician who installed an OmniPod wrong and the weapon malfunctioned during battle.  This situation is prevalent in more aggressice Clans like Jade Falcon, Burrock and Smoke Jaguar.  However, some Warriors are very respectful.  This is usually due to superb performance which is why Clan Sea Fox gives so much respect to their excelent Merchant Caste.  Other Clans may have different opinions about the Castes but they all function in the same fashion.

Clan Psychology

No matter what Caste a member of the Clan may reside in they run on the same basic principles:  Might Makes Right, Waste Not Want Not, Xenophobia, Conformity and the Honor Road.

Might Makes Right means exactly how it sounds.  Those who can prove themselves through sheer performance are the strongest and ultimately right.  This is prevalent among the Warrior Caste where warriors battle one another in a Circle of Equals.  For example, using the Trial of Grievance in the Zelbriggen section when one disagrees with another.  This same concept can be applied to the Lower Castes.  For example, one Scientist could be in a feud with another, and in order to prove who is right, they compete in their duties within a specific time frame and compare the results.  No matter what the outcome is it cannot be contested.

Waste Not Want Not is simply how the Clans do not like wasting resources.  Resources can be everyday equipment used on OmniTech, Warriors in the Warrior Caste and even members of the Lower Castes.  Warriors use Zelbriggen as a means to control the losses from war by using the less amount of resources available to secure an objective.

Xenophobia refers to how the Clans view the Inner Sphere.  They are seen as lost children, the reason for the fall of the Star League and responsible for Alexandr Kerensky’s Exodus.  The Clans plan to, one day, return to the Inner Sphere and re-establish the fallen Star League in order to save mankind.

Conformity is what every Clan member does.  It describes how the Clans do not value individuality and personal freedom or free thinking.  Each Caste is joined together to serve the Clans ultimate goal.  Those who disagree with the Clan Way are “unClanlike” or “treasonous” and must be punished.  Nicholas Kerensky has set the stone to save mankind from itself, and anyone who disagrees, is simply going to bring back Inner Sphere practices that the Clans are well above.

The Honor Road is prevalent among the Warrior Caste though some Lower Castes have their own interpretation of it.  It is not enough to simply serve the Clans.  One must do this in a fashion that brings honor to the Clan and the Caste (in which the person resides in) above one self.  It is in place to prevent the selfishness and horrors of war which was prevalent in the Inner Sphere and Pentagon Worlds.  The Clans do not practice deception, being honest, as they are an honor driven society.  Crimes you would find in the Inner Sphere are just uncommon in Clan Space.  In the Warrior Caste, the Honor Road is accomplished while embracing the practice known as Zelbriggen.

It is also worth noting that the Clans all speak Terran English without the use of contractions.  The Clans view contractions as lazy and sloppy means of speaking.  This is done to ensure clear communication among all personnel.

Clan Trials and Zelbriggen

Nicholas Kerensky felt that warfare was a basic part of human nature and came up with a Trial system as a means to control war and petty conflict.  There are a total of six Trials.  Each of them take care of certain problems a Warrior or Lower Castemen may face.

All trials being with a ritual challenge known as a Batchall.  The Challenger declairs his or her name, the type of trial and the parameters depecting the type of trial.  In most of these trials each warrior will perform bidding for the forces each will use during battle.  Each bid is less than the previous bid where both parties undercut each other until they reach the absolute minimum force they can use to finish the objective.  This method is used so that resources are not wasted and one can achieve more honor.  All trials are also fought within a Circle of Equals to ensure that outside combatants do not interfere and ensure no collateral damage to surrounding buildings or other important equipment.

In individual trials there is no bidding.  This will happen during personal conflicts between Warriors.  The challenged decides if the fight will be augmented or unaugmented.  This means if a MechWarrior chooses unaugmented combat it will be without the use of an OmniMech and will fight in hand to hand combat.  The challenger then chooses the location of the fight which can be basically anywhere.  For example, a MechWarrior in a Trial of Grievance against an Elemental could choose to fight in a zero-g environment, if he or she was challenged in unaugmented combat, to even the odds or even gain the advantage.

The Trial of Grievance is an honor battle between two Warriors that they or their superiors can not resolve.  These types of differences are supposed to be overheard by the Clan Council but this is usually not the case.  If it is overheard by the Council, and the issue cannot be resolved, the Council will do their best to make combat even.  This trial is an individual trial without bidding and fought within a Circle of Equals usually formed by nearby Warriors.  This kind of trial can end in death depending on the circumstances.  A more important Trial of Grievance can happen augmented with a much larger Circle of Equals defined.

The Trial of Position is held to advance sibkin or Warriors who have the chance to earn a promotion in rank.  This trial happens within a Circle of Equals where the challenger will face three other Warriors, engaging them one at a time, and attempt to defeat as many of them as he or she can.  Each kill gives a different rank becoming higher with each kill.  If the challenger is defeated he or she will hold the rank he or she had before the trial.  Sibkin who lose in their trial are transferred to a Lower Caste.  Warriors who wish to challenge their superior an issue a formal challenge in this manor, however, the superior does not have to accept.

The Trial of Bloodright determines the assignment of Bloodnames.  The only way to participate in this trial is being one from the bloodline and by being nominated by a superior bloodnamed warrior.  This task is not easy.  Sometimes, a grand melee will be held in order to secure a spot in the Trial if there is an overabundance of Warriors nominated or unnominated Warriors who believe they deserve the opportunity.  Only the Warriors with the best achievements gain a secure spot with only 32 spots available (one of them being the Grand Melee winner).

The Trial of Possession is used between Clans to settle disputes over resources.  This trial allows each Clan the ability to perform raids against one another for supplies their Clan may require.  Sometimes a Warrior can issue a challenge against another Warrior in his or her unit for the right to use equipment he or she feels the right to use.  More important and fierce Trial of Possessions are for bloodlines in use by other Clans.

The Trial of Refusal is used to settle disputes against Clan Council and Grand Council votes the Warrior or another Council member does not agree with.  The challenger will face each Council member who voted against him or her in honorable combat.  If the challenger wins the vote is overturned.

The Trial of Annihilation is only achieved with a unanimous Grand Council vote which seals the fate of a Clan or Warrior that has drifted from the Clan way.  A Warrior will be killed and his genes will be destroyed.  This has not happened yet, but if a Clan is a target of Annihilation, the Clan will be destroyed in the same fashion.  A lesser form of Clan Annihilation would be a Trial of Absorption which means a Clan that is given the honor of the task will fight the other Clan and absorb all of their assets.

During all of these trials, if augmented, Warriors will adhere to Zelbriggen.  Warriors will declare their targets, from their same class of unit (OmniMech, OmniFighter, OmniVehicle, Elemental, etc.) and fight them without engaging other targets active against other targets.  This can also be done by firing at target.  A Warrior will not use physical attacks of any kind.  Also, Warriors will never retreat from battle or line of sight unless he or she is granted Hegira (which allows a Warrior to withdrawal honorably from the battlefield).  If one interrupts a battle between Warriors already fighting a Grand Melee will begin.  A Grand Melee is no holds barred and all units will fight to the death.  This kind of situation is frowned upon however it can be used to gain an advantage depending on what is at stake (for example, a bloodline).  Warriors will often challenge units outside of their class of unit, and if this is done, he faces the entire point unless the point deems otherwise.  To even the odds while attacking units outside of their class, both weight and unit type, the challenger or challenged will close into an appropriate range so they can effectively engage one another.  This means if an OmniMech challenges a point of Elementals or Vehicles the Warriors will attack one another within their range of fire.

Building the Perfect Warrior:  The Trueborn

Nicholas Kerensky came up with the “Trueborn”  concept to create the best Warriors mankind will ever see.  These Warriors are created from the genes from other Warriors who have fallen in battle by Scientists in what is called the Eugenics Program.  Scientists match the best DNA together, and after a each generation of Warriors, it is believed that they are improved and perfection will eventually be achieved.  Despite this, everyone (except for some Freeborn) looks at the Clan Warrior as perfection.

When a Trueborn reaches the age of 5 he or she is entered into the Warrior training program or “Sibko”.  It is a very harsh and deadly process which was built so that only the best will make it through.  In the early stages “Sibkin” (as young Trueborn are called) learn everything they will need to operate within the Clans along with a basic education (which is well above Inner Sphere High School standards).  Training becomes much more difficult in the pre-teen/teenage phase which introduces Clan military testing.  The weak Sibkin will either die in the process or wash out of training.  Those who wash out of training will be sent to a lower caste that matches their skill levels and talents.  Those who make it through find out which part of the Warrior program they will enter next.  This phase begins after the teenage years right at the beginning of young adulthood.

Warrior Phenotype

Those at the top of the program who show an even balance in strength, endurance, perception and reflexes become MechWarriors.  These are the best and the most respected among all types of Warriors.  They are on their way to achieve perfection and are taught to operate an OmniMech.  Those who fail in this process either die, wash out into another caste, or more than likely wash out into another Warrior Phenotype program.  Those who show a large amount of strength and endurance are entered into the Elemental program.  Here they perfect their strengths and learn how to use Elemental Battle Armor.  Those who show a large amount of perception and reflexes are entered into the Aerospace program.  Here they perfect their strengths and learn how to pilot a basic OmniFighter.

Out of all the Sibkin who enter these programs only 1-5 make it.  Those who make it will enter their first Trial of Position.  A Sibkin will fight 3 similar opponents who are much more experienced while adhering to the Clan rules of engagement known as Zelbriggen.  The first kill gives Warrior status, the second gives Star Commander and the third gives Star Captain.  After this, the Warrior receives the EI Implant, which improves their skills even more.  Then, the Warrior is sent to the front line to begin his or her military service.

The Freeborn

A Freeborn is someone who is born the natural way between two mates.  While this happens quite often in Clan society it is a boon.  “Freebirth” or “Freeborn” can be used as Trueborn Warrior curses to insult others.

While they are looked down on, Freeborns can still prove their worth to Clan society by entering the Warrior program or becoming part of the Caste they were born into.  The Freeborn Warrior Program is similar to the Trueborn Program, however, it is much more deadly because of how the Freeborn is viewed.  Most of them die in the process

Death is Glory

Unlike the Inner Sphere, death is something embraced by the Clan military and all Trueborns alike.  Those who serve their Clan well, overcoming odds that the normal Warrior cannot, and die, will become part of the gene pool to breed the perfect Warrior.  Death is basically an accomplishment and testament to the Clan way.  Those who have proven themselves will die and make way for new and improved blood by contributing their superior genes to the gene pool.

However, this does not mean that the Warrior is suicidal.  A Warrior has to accomplish many things to receive this honor.  If a Warrior is concerned about survival such great achievements are far from being possible.  Those who grow past the age of 30 are past their prime and are then used train new Sibkin or sent to a second line unit.  If the Warrior survives even longer he or she enters the infantry program which ensures an unwasted death.  Those who survive this long never make it into the genepool unless they have earned a Bloodname or place in the Clan Rememberance.

A Bloodname is the greatest accomplishment a Trueborn Warrior can achieve.  Those who constantly triumph impossible odds, showing their true might in combat without wasting resources, are nominated to compete in a set of trials in a tournament fashion against other nominated Warriors.  This is known as a Trial of Bloodright.  A lot of these Warriors will die in the process but the achievement makes it worth it.  Only one Warrior will earn the Bloodname.  Those who get a renowned Bloodname can become a Khan, saKhan or Loremaster.  Only 25 Warriors can hold any one Bloodname, and when one dies, the Bloodname is up for grabs.

The Remembrance is a poem describing the history of the Clans and each individual Clan alike.  Those who achieve great things can have the opportunity of being incorporated into the Remembrance ensuring their place in history (being incorporated into the Rememberance is basically the highest achievement a Freeborn can achieve).

Enhanced-Imaging Implant

The Enhanced Imaging Implant (EI Implant, for short) is the literal bond between man and machine.  The Warrior is connected to their machine without the strain of a neurohelmet with a completely wireless HUD and balancing interface.  This technology started out with humanoid shaped combat vehicles but has since moved onto most types of combat units utilized by the Clans, such as OmniVehicles and OmniFighters.

The implant is given to those who achieve Warrior status.  Scientists perform a long operation weaving this technology into the body of the Warrior.  When complete, it has the look of a very technological body tribal tattoo, which makes them easily recognizable among non-Warriors.  These are never given to Freeborns who achieve Warrior status because it is wasteful.  After the implant is recieved it takes a few weeks, depending on the Warrior, to recover from the operation.

A Clan machine has two interfaces.  The first is the manual interface (usually with a neurohelment) that every Sibkin learns to use.  EI is the second interface and it is very similar only much more efficient.  Because of its efficiency the Warrior’s gunnery and piloting skills are greatly enhanced (-1 Gunnery and -1 Piloting).  Most if this is due to the in-depth HUD interface which displays a neon green grid over the battlefield including combat units and obstacles.  Combat units will change color on locations indicating the severity of the damage (blue for untouched, yellow for damage, red for severe, black or nothing for disabled or loss of location) allowing for more efficient aimed shots (Can make aimed shots at any time with a +4 Modifier, does not stack with -1 Gunnery or count against normal aimed shots).  This interface makes night combat much easier for the Warrior (No night combat modifier) and even makes targeting much more easier in difficult terrain (Every woods hex or smoke hex creates a +1 modifier but line of sight is determined normally).  The interface also assists with the piloting of the machine by adapting the Warriors reflexes in a way a basic neurohelmet cannot.  As a result, Warriors can perform advanced maneuvers with little risk.

However, this implant does not come without serious side effects.  Hits to the internal structure will cause a damaging feedback that could kill the Warrior.  Ammo explosions are also much more severe.  This is why the Warrior is trained to operate using both modes, so he or she can switch between the two, depending on the severity of the situation.  Also, prolonged use will cause very bad migraines that can hinder performance.  A Warrior should be disciplined enough to use the system to the best of their abilities.

OmniTech

In order to minimize the waste of resources and increase flexibility on the battlefield the Clans have developed OmniTechnology.  OmniTech is applied in various forms, including OmniMechs, OmniFighters and OmniVehicles.  More recent innovations have turned the bays in dropships into Omni facilities so the Clans can transport their units with ease.

OmniPods (Mechs, Fighters and Vehicles)

When an OmniTech unit is produced it is built with a base configuration that includes all weapons and equipment.  The armor and structure configuration cannot be changed because it will damage the machines modular nature.  Only weapons, heat sinks (NOT integrated in the engine already), ammunition and jump jets can be swapped with ease which are constantly referred to as “pods.”  OmniTech reduces the time it takes to repair and refit damaged machines which allows our technicians to work at a much faster pace which better serves the demands of our Warriors.

All OmniMech and OmniVehicle units are equipped with special handles used to transport Elementals during battle.  Also, a system described as “Cellular Ammunition Storage Equipment” (CASE) is integrated with all ammunition pods.  When a ammunition location is hit critically, CASE vents the explosion away from vital equipment so that the rest of the unit can be salvaged in the event of an ammunition explosion.  This means that all damage is dealt to the single location destroying all armor, equipment and internals in its place.  It is weight free and easy for technicians to adapt all ammunition reloads.  Common Clan practice keeps ammunition in locations without vital equipment (like engines and gyros or the cockpit) so that the unit can be salvaged and repaired after battle.

Personal/Custom Variants

Because of OmniTech’s flexibility certain Warriors will create their own configurations to suit their own needs.  With OmniMechs, OmniVehicles and OmniFighters, technicians can perform class A or B refits with almost no time.  With Class A refits a pod can be replaced by pods that match the space freed.  So an SRM-2 with 1 ton of ammo can be replaced by two Medium Lasers, two heat sinks, two jump jets or one Large Laser.  With Class B refits a pod can be replaced by a pod much larger than the original or total space freed.  This means a Medium Laser could be replaced by a Large Laser or a LRM-10 system by a PPC.  In this kind of refit it is even possible to replace dual PPC’s and heat sinks with an Autocannon 20.  Warriors with certain rank earn the ability to customize their machine.

The Warrior can either use the stock configuration or perform only one Class A refit.  The Star Commander can perform any number of Class A refits.  The Star Captain can perform any number of Class A refits along with one Class B refit.  Star Colonels and above can perform any number of Class A and Class B refits.  Certain commanders can allow their Warriors to utilize more customization options depending on the situation.  The Clans do this for logistical reasons while honoring the demand of their Clan and the skills of their Warriors.  So, it is not uncommon to see differences between OmniTech or Warriors utilizing more than one weapon arrangement between battles.

OmniBays (Dropships)

To be able to transport any kind of unit the Clans have developed OmniBays for all of their dropships.  All bays including cargo holds can be changed depending on the type of unit the Clan may have to transport between worlds.  Everything else is fixed equipment and cannot be changed.  These bays are fully functional and operate like their original counterpart.

Battle Armor

Even though the OmniMech is the most important unit in the Clan Military the Clans have developed a more refined form of Infantry.  Clan Battle Armor is known as the Elemental and it comes in may forms.  Each suit comes with a detatchable SRM-2 launcher with two reloads plus a primary and secondary weapon.  The primary weapon is usually an OmniMech grade Small Laser, Flamer or Machine Gun in an OmniPod mount.  The secondary weapon is an anti-personnel weapon utilized by second line infantry formations like a submachinegun or autorifle.  These units are deployed with OmniTech, however, some zero-g configurations do exist known as marine armor.

My goal is to summarize each Clan with a paragraph depicting their style, preferences, basically things that make them different from the rest of the Clans present in the field manuals.  I basically included all of the common Clan practices in my AU and that's about as far as I want to go with it.  It is going to be pretty basic.  I will take volunteers and give credit where it is due as long as you work with the material I posted above meaning I don't want to see "this clan uses double heat sinks" or things of that nature.

Unit Organization and Rank

Per Nicholas Kerensky, the Clans use a base 5 organizational system while organizing their forces.  The first unit is a point which consists of either 1 OmniMech, 2 OmniFighters, 2 OmniVehicles, 5 Battle Armor or 25 Infantry (Each squad of infantry is 5 units).  Point 1 is the most superior of the unit (referred to as the Point Commander) while point 5 is the lowest (which would be in the case of Battle Armor where a point is equal to 5 of these units).  These units have the rank of Warrior.  5 points makes up a Star and is lead by a Star Commander.  2 Stars makes a Binary and sometimes the Clans will use 3 Stars to form a Trinary.  These are lead by Star Captains.  4 to 5 Binaries or Trinaries makes a Cluster which is lead by a Star Colonel.  3 to 5 Clusters makes up a Galaxy which is lead by a Galaxy Commander.  The saKhan is second in command of the entire Clan with the Khan at the top of the totem pole.  Sometimes a Khan, or saKhan, will lead their own Galaxies but most of them have their own Trinary.  Becoming Khan is the highest achievement and honor a Warrior can obtain after gaining their bloodname (a bloodname is also required before becoming a saKhan, Loremaster, Oathmaster and Galaxy Commander).

A Clan Navy works much differently but follows the same principles.  A Point Commander commands a section or a work crew on a vessel.  A Star Commander an executive officer or department head on a vessel.  The Star Captain commands a Dropship or Jumpship.  The Star Commodore commands a squadron of Dropships or Jumpships or a single Warship.  Finally, the Star Admiral commands a major Warship or a star of Warships.

Two ranks not mentioned yet are Loremaster and Oathmaster.  The Loremaster holds all history and knowledge of the Clan.  It is a renouned position that only one Warrior can achieve at a time.  The Khan will appoint a Loremaster once the Warrior undergoes questioning related to the history of the Clan and appropriate combat trials.  Sometimes a Loremaster will lead a  Galaxy.  The Oathmaster does not require combat to become because it is simply the oldest Bloodnamed Warrior in the Clan.  The Oathmaster will administer all oaths and the Loremaster will record them.

Doesn't always have the most recent info, and some say it's not the most accurate, but as you are looking for older, better established info it may be of some help to you.   Plus if anything is not accurate I'm sure that there will be plenty of people that will be happy to correct any errors they think you have made.

I thought the Clans were pretty diverse?  All of them exist right now.  I may take some unofficial Clan ideas though... like Storm Tiger and Stone Rhino.

a couple of thoughts -- on equipment -- feel free to poke large holes in all of this...also, not sure if this should go here or that other thread, so...

for the Hellions --
a bunch of speedy, light and medium things -- Hussar [probably closest to a totem mech for them in this AU, since Stephan Cage was such a fan of it], Hermes, Spider, Assassin, anything that moves at 6/9(/6) or faster...if you're inclined to give them a heavy, the 5/8/5 Exterminator, maybe?

for the Spirits --
(assuming they're still the hardship clan) lots of the very common designs -- Wasps, Stingers, Locusts, PHawks, the 55 ton triumvirate, maybe even the Tbolt, Crusader, Archer, 'Hammer...probably modified with energy weapons...

for the Jaguars --
anything that dishes out massive damage quickly -- Hunchbacks, Warhammers, Marauders, etc...(thinking here on the brutality shown by most of the Jaguars...)

for the Ravens --
this is going into weird speculative things, and is a bit different from the canon, but since ravens are scavengers, I think that maybe ideal mechs (at least) for them would be a fair bit of FrankenMechs -- a Crusader-3R with a Warhammer arm, and goofy stuff like that...(hell, with thoughts like that, maybe the Ravens should be the hardluck clan in this AU...)

for the Bears --
the Victor (as suggested in an earlier post), the Hussar or Hermes to fill the Fire Moth spot, and maybe the Tbolt or Crusader for the Mad Dog spot...

for the Wolverines --
well, the different varieties of Wolverine, probably, and the Griffin and SHawk...

The Wolverines were the most inventive Clan from the statr. They had the first new designs. keeping that going with no annihilation might prove interesting. they might have become the premier Clan.

Actually I would prefer all posts in here.  You're fine and thanks for the insight!   [rockon]

The Wolverines were the most inventive Clan from the statr. They had the first new designs. keeping that going with no annihilation might prove interesting. they might have become the premier Clan.

I might actually make Wolverine one of the major players in this AU.

Major Powers (at least what I'm thinking unless I get some good recommendations)

Clan Ghost Bear
Clan Jade Falcon
Clan Mongoose - They need some more love
Clan Nova Cat
Clan Smoke Jaguar - Just all out powerful and aggressive, Falcon and Burrock are close behind
Clan Steel Viper
Clan Wolf - Chosen by Kerensky and have quite the shoes to fill
Clan Wolverine

Minor Powers

Clan Blood Spirit - Isolationists stuck on York constantly pushed back by Clan Burrock
Clan Burrock - Constantly at war with Blood Spirit and Fire Mandrill, Dark Caste (or Bandit) ties that help them with getting equipment
Clan Cloud Cobra
Clan Coyote - Up Wolf's butt but they will be another one of the primary innovators
Clan Fire Mandrill - Fractured but still kicking
Clan Goliath Scorpion
Clan Hell’s Horses
Clan Ice Hellion
Clan Sea Fox - Not really a force to be scared of, however, they are strong due to their ties with basically EVERY Clan (merchant)
Clan Snow Raven
Clan Star Adder
Clan Widowmaker

Maybe make the Ravens even more space oriented. Let them act as the Clans principal explorers. They discover exploitable worlds, then let the other fight trials of possession over the right to settle them. The Ravens get a percent from whoever wins.

They also act as referees if squabbles get out of hand by imposing blockades on planets if some Clan doesn't behave.

Remember my earlier post about people correcting the mistakes that they think you are making?  I apologize for this.   I realize that this is your AU, but I feel compelled to point out that the wolverines were the last clan to embrace freedom.

Like a poisonous weed, the Not-named fostered
Thoughts and actions against the Clans, calling them
"Independence" and "Freedom" not realizing
Their every act chained them to the corruptions
That brought down the noble Star League
And set the Inner Sphere aflame
But the Clans survived by condemning
Them to bitter annihilation
Led by Clans Wolf and Widowmaker,
The Grand Council  wiped clean the records,
Obliterating with the warm blood
Of its tragically doomed warriors
Every mention of the Not-Named Clan."
-- The Remembrance, Passage 149, Verse 55, Lines 21-33
It's kinda difficult to change to an authoritarian, caste based system of governance (like Nick was pushing for) with people like the wolverines around.   Even if you choose to rewrite clan wolverine (already adding more work) it's still (to my mind) rather likely that somebody would raise those questions, and then have to be dealt with the same way.  (adding even still more work)

It might be easier, and more plausible to still have the Wolverines be annihilated.  But rather than having their military fight a rear guard action allowing the noncombatants to escape, have the entirety (every man, woman, and if necessary child) of Clan Wolverine fight tooth and nail.  This kind of total warfare could have a significant effect on the rate of technological development for the clans.  Plus, if I recall correctly, the Wolverines were the ones who developed some of the first advanced weapons, the ERPPC i believe.   This COULD make a number of advanced weapons be "tainted" by the stigma of the Not-Named Clan. (this fits the intro tech clan invasion mold reasonably well)

Just a thought...  Again I apologize.

The Wolverines also were the first ones to develop new mech designs, with the Pulverizer and the Stag. Given a few more years to work on their production, they might have had a military force that was seriously better than any of the other Clans. That might have been part of Nicky's worries.

Suppose the Wolverines had won the trial for the Brian cache. How much different would things have been.

Well I started writing up the Clans:

Clan Blood Spirit

Named for the spirit that bound all of the Clans together during the creation of the 20 original Clans.  Clan Blood Spirit is without a doubt the proudest Clan, ironically putting themselves into isolation.  This was not without the help of Clan Burrock who has stopped almost all opportunities of expansion Clan Blood Spirit has attempted.  Clan Mongoose has also been a thorn in their spine but not to the same degree as the Burrocks who have even called for the absorption of Clan Blood Spirit.  As a result, Clan Blood Spirit is the worst when it comes to technological expansion compared to all the Clans.  However,  they are pure with Warrior tradition, having the deadliest Warrior program which creates the highest skilled warriors the Clans have ever seen.  They value everyone in their Clan, signifying the totem that was given to them by Kerensky himself, while accusing other Clans (especially Clan Burrock) of falling from the way into treachery.

Abilities

+2 Initiative while defending
Can force the initiative in any scenario
+1 to all consciousness rolls

Allies

Clan Fire Mandrill
Clan Sea Fox
Clan Snow Raven

Enemies

Clan Burrock
Clan Mongoose

Bloodnames

Boques

Lewis
Keller
Yanez
Pitcher
Cluff

Clan Burrock

Named for the Dagdian Burrock, a centipede like creature almost human in size, capable of spitting a powerful acid which can corrode through solid rock.  The insect burrows deep into the crust of Dagda without a care for the resources around it.  Their Khans, Herve and Nigel Polczyk, are twins and were once part of the Rim World's fighting force against General Kerensky before the Exodus.  Shamed by their past they joined Kerensky in order to redeem themselves.  Today, they are among the most aggressive Clans.  Clan Burrock lives by a credo, “Yesterday's enemy can be tomorrow's friend,” which has been theirs since their creation.  They assist other Clans, Snow Raven in particular, with mining and colonizing expeditions and escorting materials.  Other Clans, like Clan Blood Spirit, are sworn enemies of Clan Burrock who raids them constantly.  The Clan is borderline obsessive (sometimes crazy) when it comes to fulfilling an objective and will stop at nothing until it is completed.  During operation Klondike they had a top heavy force, but now, they rely on light and medium OmniMechs (cheaper and more efficient) supported by OmniFighters, light and medium OmniVehicles and Battle Armor.

+1 Initiative against Clan Blood Spirit and Clan Fire Mandrill

Don't forget that the Crusader/Warden split didn't occur until much later in their history. If you're writing their history near the begiining, it doesn't exist.

which through the IlKhan Nicholas's Journal from that time period and his personal vid logs which are being denounced by the crusaders and most wardens too, as blasphemy, prove Nicholas was using the Wolverines to bind the 19 clans together against a common foe.   Also from that time period, a journal from a previously unknown Snow Raven Khan, has been found and released by the Snow Ravens showing Nicholas's deteration into a dictator over the clans.   Clan Wolverine pioneered freedom by letting all members of the clan have a say, not just the warriors, they removed the stifling caste system to foster true brotherhood throughout the clan, throughtout the last 10 yrs since the split of clan wolf a tattering of information has been found by seekers all over clan space that refute the "official" history and try to set right the truth.   Clan Woverine will be vindicated as well as those who died knowing the truth but were expendable to Nicholas's plans.

Clan Cloud Cobra:  The Enlightened

Named for a species of snake from terra releaced into Arcadia where it lives on in the planets jungles.  Clan Cloud Cobra is the most religious Clan paying attention to what they call “The Way” which is derived from all religions.  Still, they are a force to be reckoned with, strong with their politics and clear on furthering their own agendas.
Clan Cloud Cobra has a different approach to their Warrior program, teaching them “The Way” as well as developing their philosophical and theological awareness, making them sort of like teachers and even priests.  As a result, each Warrior (and even lower caste members) have different interpretations of “The Way” and it can separate them, though not to the degree of Clan Fire Mandrill.  These inevitably became “Cloisters,” which are lead by exKhans, all varying in religious views.
The Cloud Cobras use combined arms as a way to make up for their very small touman size and lack of OmniMechs.  They prefer their OmniMechs backed up by an even force of OmniVehicles, OmniFighters, and Infantry (both Battle Armor and conventional) though their Elementals are the worst compared to the rest of the Clans.  Their OmniFighters are known to strike first, softening targets so ground targets can finish them off.

Abilities

    * -2 Gunnery for OmniFighters attacking ground targets on first pass

    * +1 Initiative in any scenario

Well, I'm glad to hear that there may well be some small (posthumous) vindication for Clan Wolverine.  It's also good to know that Nicholas was highly interested holding the clans together by whatever means necessary.   Which would mean that clansomebodyorother would probably have to be annihilated.

Interesting work so far FF.  I must confess though, I'm waiting to see how the clan(s) handle the Hyades Cluster....

The Exodus

The Clans start their history back to the fall of the Star League.  After the Star League was officially disbanded, General Aleksandr Kerensky grew tired of war and saw the Inner Sphere falling into a dark age, so he gathered up his remaining forces and followers.  In August 12, 2781 around 6 million followers exiled themselves from the Inner Sphere and started a journey for peaceful life.  One day, Kerensky promised their return, to inevitably restore the Star League and rescue the Inner Sphere from itself.

The Exodus lasted 5 long years.  It was a grueling process that tested the patience and finesse of Kerensky’s crew.  Soon rebels started to emerge announcing their ambition to turn back.  It was here he issued General Order 137 and the infamous Hidden Hope Doctrine (that eventually defined the Clans) which gave a much needed boost of morale.

“Return to the Inner Sphere is impossible for us. Our heritage and our convictions are different from those we left behind. The greed of the five Great Houses and the Council Lords is a disease that can only be burned away by the passing of decades, even centuries. And though the fighting may seem to slow, or even cease, it will erupt again as long as there are powerful men to covet one another's wealth. We shall live apart, conserving all the good of the Star League and ridding ourselves of the bad, so that when we return, and return we shall, our shining moral character will be as much our shield as our BattleMechs and fighters.”

- The Hidden Hope Doctrine of General Order 137

A lot of people were lost in the entire process, but it was not in vain, because on August 24, 2786 they found the Pentagon Worlds.

“To all citizens of the Inner Sphere do I, Aleksandr Kerensky, send greetings.

Know that I have taken the remnant of the Star League Defense Force which has remained true to its purpose beyond the boundaries of the Inner Sphere, beyond the Periphery. I have done this, neither out of disappointment with those whom we leave behind, nor out of spite or disdain, as some will say. No, we have left the Inner Sphere because we love it too much to see it destroyed. In the wake of the Usurper's coup, and the long, bitter fighting that came with it, I fear that my forces would do incalculable, possibly irreparable, harm to our society. We are sworn to ward the Star League and its subjects, not destroy it.

Thus, we have left the only homes we have ever known to place the destructive capability of this armada beyond the reach of those who would use it, not for defense, but for conquest. Perhaps, with the might of our 'Mechs and ships out of reach, the leaders who now grapple with one another will relinquish their dreams of subjugating their neighbors and learn to live in peace with them.

Perhaps, one day, should mankind step back from the brink of the abyss, we, our children, or our children's children will return, to once more serve and protect and guide the Star League in mankind's quest for the stars.

Farewell.”

- The "Voice of Kerensky", September 9, 2786

Each planet was colonized and civilization grew.  However, with each day that passed, Kerensky was losing his grip on his new society.  A civil war broke out which turned into exactly what they basically ran from.  Rebel forces were quick to contest Kerensky’s rule which forced Alexander and his son Nicholas to start a second exodus.  This time, 800 of Kerensky’s followers joined him on the journey (2801).

The Second Exodus

It was not long until Kerensky’s followers laid eyes upon Strata Mechty (translating into Land of Dreams) and started to work hard, once again, to build a new society.  Shortly after, Aleksandr Kerensky passed away and left everything in the hands of his son Nicholas.  Nicholas Kerensky knew it was time to build his own society.  Here, he came up with the Caste System and rebuilt society.  Then, he tested 800 warriors and formed the armies who would return to the Pentagon Worlds and restore what was once his fathers.  He successfully forged what is known as The Clans today (2820).

Operation: Klondike

Together, the Clans invaded the Pentagon Worlds (2822).  They found that these worlds fell to the horrors of war, being lead by bandits, some far from recovery.  Most people accepted the Clans with open arms and some fought back.  However, this did not come without loss.  Nicholas lost his brother, Andery Kerensky, who chose to fight alongside the forces of Clan Wolf on Eden.  His Exterminator suffered several shots to the cockpit which immediately killed him.  Clan Wolf was quick to destroy all enemies involved with this act of barbarism.  To this day, Andery Kerensky is remembered for his influence on Clan culture and through the ritual of Zelbriggen, created by Nicholas Kerensky in his honor.

Post-Klondike Struggles

After Operation: Klondike (2823) the Clans fell into a time of struggle after they worked on absorbing the remaining survivors.  Most people took the transition lightly but others were more reluctant to change doubting the Caste System that was in place.  Most problems occurred among Clan Smoke Jaguar, the most aggressive Clan, who forced them to adapt or face consequences.  People ventured into the Dark Caste to avoid Clan rule and avoid any ridicule.  Clan Smoke Jaguar was the least tolerant of all Clans who were quick to punish all refuges who dared to defy their ways.  Some of their units went as far as to hunt down all the Dark Caste refuges who ran from them, once part of the Clan or not.

Another similar incident happened with Clan Burrock (2825), where part of their front line forces actually joined the Dark Caste.  Any acknowledgement or support of the Dark Caste is considered unclanlike.   Clan Burrock denied any allegations against them from Clan Blood Spirit and Clan Fire Mandrill (who were saying that the Burrocks were using the Dark Caste to supplement their forces) and offered to destroy all of the units that left their Clan.  The ilKhan of the time gave them the help of Clan Cloud Cobra to make sure that the task was completed.  It took several months, but in the end, Clan Burrock and Clan Cloud Cobra reported that they were both successful.

Other Clans struggled to stay together.  Clan Fire Mandrill split from internal affairs into what they define as Kindraas (2825).  This has really hurt the growth of the Clan, both economically and militarily, and has earned them a lot of criticism from other Clans (especially Clan Burrock).  While they acknowledge the totem that Kerensky has chosen for them each Kindraa operates like a separate Clan.  Rather than deal with the issue, plenty of Clans shrugged it off, assuming that Clan Fire Mandrill will basically doom themselves over time.  Other Clans like Burrock and Smoke Jaguar constantly raided them in this period.

As an attempt to help the other Clans hold together, Clan Blood Spirit started the ilChi program (2825).  This program was developed to improve their image among other Clans while strengthen them as a whole.  Ultimately, this strategy worked for many years to come.  Clan Burrock and Clan Mongoose are the only Clans who actually hate the program and constantly ridicule Clan Blood Spirit for even creating it.  They say it is an unClanlike endeavor and a silly way for Clan Blood Spirit to compensate for their weaknesses.

Kerensky’s Chosen

With Operation: Klondike successful, and the after effects successfully taken care of, Nicholas Kerensky made a decision that shook the Clans.  Since the beginning of Operation: Klondike, Kerensky promised that the one Clan who performs the best would have the honor of carrying on his legacy.  Based on the performance of all Clans during Operation: Klondike he decided to leave his blood legacy to Clan Wolf (2830) making them Kerensky’s chosen and marking them as the strongest Clan.  Kerensky expressed that their strength is what will drive the Clans forward even through the invasion of the Inner Sphere.  Clan Jade Falcon, Clan Smoke Jaguar were both outraged believing that they should hold the legacy, and to this day, cannot stand the sight of Clan Wolf.  Clans Jade Falcon and Smoke Jaguar constantly targeted Clan Wolf, going as far as issuing trials for Kerensky’s legacy, but each time Clan Wolf had defended it (and still does until this day).  Clan Widowmaker handles “the atrocity” (as they call it) in their own way by conquering objectives that the Wolves have failed  at.  This has gone a lot further in proving might opposed to the methods employed by Clan Jade Falcon and Clan Smoke Jaguar.

Expansion:  The Rise of Clan Nova Cat, Clan Burrock and Clan Cloud Cobra

With the Pentagon Worlds secured, the Clans worked on colonizing worlds around and beyond the Kerensky Cluster and Pentagon Worlds.  Clan Nova Cat, Clan Burrock and Clan Cloud Cobra were among the few, and the best at the task, who were adept at securing worlds and beginning mining and colonizing expeditions.  Clan Star Adder stumbled upon a resource rich world and needed help from Clan Burrock.  The Star Adders would set up on new worlds while the Burrocks provided them an escort so they could transport sensitive materials.  As a result, Clan Star Adder made a deal with Clan Burrock, who once hated them, which gave both Clans enormous profit among the other Clans (2831).  Clan Blood Spirit made their own attempts to expand beyond York but this has been stopped by Clan Burrock and Clan Mongoose every time.  Even with the help of Clan Fire Mandrill any hope of expansion for Clan Blood Spirit was hindered.

The Scorpion’s Discovery

During the expansion, Clan Goliath Scorpion created their “Necrosia” potion (derived from Goliath Scorpion venom) as a means to expand their horizons as well, though they were not accepted.  Other Clans were quick to reject them because of these supposed “Vision Quests” they were on, except for Clan Snow Raven, who used their aerospace arm to provide them assistance in exchange for any materials acquired.  These “Seekers” were quick to discover BattleMechs that were lost during the second exodus.  Other Clans jumped in and fought trials to obtain these new units.  Some won and lost, but in the end, the ilKhan Nicholas Kerensky ordered them to distribute this technology because it would improve the touman of all Clans in case of outside invaders.  The Scorpions were hesitant but they eventually agreed with the interest of the Clans in mind (2832).

The Creation of OmniTechnology

While the other Clans have gained the technology from Clan Goliath Scorpion, Clan Coyote were the first to refine it, creating what we know today as OmniTech (2833).  OmniTech was derived from the Mercury BattleMech, which was initially built with modular technology, acquired from Clan Goliath Scorpion.  At the time of the Star League, modular technology was only being experimented with.  This technology was brought with during the Exodus and the Clans assumed it was lost by the Pentagon Powers.  The Clans were quick to hear about this discovery and made all attempts they could to get their hands on it.  The Coyotes were great at defending it but the first Clan to get it was ultimately Clan Sea Fox, a Clan run by merchants.  As a result, the technology started to spread to other Clans.

At the same time Clan Hell’s Horses revealed Battle Armor called the Elemental which was made to support OmniTech and strengthen their infantry (2833).  Once again, the Clans fought trials against them to gain means to produce them.  Clan Wolf was the first to gain the design and created the variants (outside of Laser) we see today (2834).  Clan Sea Fox acquired the design from Clan Wolf and their merchants sold the designs to other Clans.

The Mongoose and the Snake

When OmniTech was first created one of the Clans to gain this technology early was Clan Star Adder after defeating Clan Coyote in a Trial of Possession.  The Star Adders were slow in adapting the technology but Scientists working close with Technicians were able to replicate it to their existing BattleMech designs.  A few of these designs were tested while Clan Star Adder defended their colony on planet Marshall from Clan Mongoose.  In the end, Clan Star Adder lost their holding and all of their work related to OmniTech.  This enraged them and they launched a counter assault on the Mongoose colony on Tokasha.  Clan Star Adder won the battle, gained what they had initially lost, and as a final insult they took all of the Mongoose survivors and used them to repopulate the lost Adder colony on Marshall.  Clan Mongoose launched a counter assault, and at this point they were no match, but once they regained OmniTech they hit the Adders with full force.  Unfortunately it was not enough as Clan Star Adder was able to regain the technology once again.  Since this tug of war Clan Mongoose has always had a hatred for Clan Star Adder.  Even after this bold move, Clan Mongoose launched an assault on Clan Smoke Jaguar in order to gain OmniTech, believing that the Clan was much weaker than them.  The Jaguar’s made quick work of them.

The Spread of OmniTech and Enhanced Imaging

With OmniTech upgrades being applied to all BattleMech blueprints all non-omni units were quickly recycled (2835) and old designs were reverse engineered and refined.  Around this time, Clan Sea Fox became a merchant powerhouse, driving trade between all Clans.  However, this made them the target of more conservative Clans like Mongoose, Burrock, Smoke Jaguar and Jade Falcon.  The OmniMech was the first successful application of OmniTech which opened the way for OmniVehicles and OmniFighters.  OmniVehicles were first introduced by Clan Hell’s Horses (2836).  OmniFighters were introduced and perfected by Clan Snow Raven (2836).  In the end all, through a lot of Trials and some influence of ilKhan Nicholas Kerensky, all  Clans were effectively producing OmniTech by (2845)

During the spread of OmniTech an innovation was then made by Clan Jade Falcon shaped what would change the Clan Warrior forever, the Enhanced Imaging Implant (2837).  It was in testing for years before the introduction of OmniTech, and surprisingly, the system easily replaces the cockpit.  Plenty of Warriors died in the process but it was not in vain.  Clan Nova Cat was the first to notice the technology during a trial where Falcon warriors used it to deadly capacity.  They were the first Clan to win this technology but not without serous losses.  Other Clans followed in their footsteps until ilKhan Nicholas Kerensky stepped in to ensure the spread of this useful technology.  The Clan Jade Falcon Khan challenged this decision to a Trial of Refusal (which was inevitable considering their hatred for Clan Wolf), and in the end, the Khan lost the trial.  As a result, the Enhanced Imaging Implant was opened to all Clans who then integrated the system into their Warriors and machines (2840).

The Clans Today (2850)

Still under the rule of ilKhan Nicholas Kerensky the Clans have prospered despite their differences and struggles.  Clan Wolverine, Clan Mongoose and Clan Wolf have become powerful players in Clan space.  Clan Nova Cat, Clan Burrock, Clan Star Adder and Clan Cloud Cobra have dominated all expeditions, mining and colonization duties beyond the Pentagon Worlds and Kerensky Cluster.  Other Clans like Jade Falcon and Smoke Jaguar have kept Kerensky’s Chosen in place.

The credibility of some Clans have been brought up.  Clan Wolverine, while powerful, has been judged by other Clans as unClanlike.  The are slowly becoming more in tune to concepts of democracy, allowing more freedom among their lower castes,  which has doomed the Inner Sphere from day one.  However they have yet to vocalize anything.  Clan Mongoose has become what most Clans describe as crazy due to their conflicts with Clan Star Adder and Clan Smoke Jaguar, which puts a taint on their leadership abilities.  Even Clan Burrock is rumored to have some kind of deal with the Dark Caste because how they have strengthened their touman in recent years.  There is no hard evidence that proves this, even though this is brought up by Clan Blood Spirit in almost every Grand Council meeting, and most Clans believe it is because of constant raiding between the two.

It's fine.  :)

I think I got the dates much better now and I did a better job at portraying what happened.  Still needs work but I think it's getting there.

In other words, I changed the post with the history.

Just so people understand, this is an AU, so things will happen differently.  This is right where I want it to start so I can actually come up with.  This puts Nicholas at about 90 years old I believe and he's going to expire.   *devious laughter*  }:)

So, at this time, I will be writing stuff about the Clans like I intended to.  I want to have the chance to define EVERY Clan before I start striking the hammer.

I can't tell you why I sit here and do this stuff other than I'm having fun...  #P

My love for introductory technology and for the Clans has come together.

Are you really going to turn all those SL mechs into omnis? That ought to shake things up.

I've considered the following:

Having the Star League designs as Clan Specific*
Having the "Unseen" or "Project Phoenix" as 2nd line BattleMechs (along side the non-omni equipment like conventional fighters, conventional infantry, LRM and SRM carriers)
Having the rest as Clan General (even Vehicles and Fighters)

* Each Clan would produce one of these, for example, Clan Burrock will make the Wyvern, while Clan Coyote will make two (I'm thinking Mercury and Highlander)

Mercury was redesigned by Wolverine. Coyote simply redid it after Wolverine went blooey.

Mercury was redesigned by Wolverine. Coyote simply redid it after Wolverine went blooey.

In this case though (since it's an AU that changes everything after Klondike) I would have Coyote with the Mercury so they can create OmniTechnology.

Who redid the Wolverine mech? Turned it into the Conjurer.

Simply not going to happen because this is going to stay as an introductory technology AU.  If anything, I'm considering giving the Wolverines the Black Knight or Crab.

The Guillotine was a Coyote remake. Put that one on your list.

I'll have to give the Coyote the Guillotine as well then.  Looks like they will have the Mercury and Guillotine exclusively to themselves.

Don't forget Wolf Clan's remake of the Orion. They were the only ones using it.

The Orion is going to be their preference (along with the Catapult... don't really know about the other units yet).  Star League?  Not too sure yet.  The Flashman seems right but I think I may give that guy to the Nova Cats.

Don't think the Flashman was ever redone. That ought to be interesting. I always liked the Flashman and Black Knight.

The Phoenix Hawk redo was Steel Viper.

Great Wyrm was Mongoose's remake of the Dragon. Locust IIC was their remake as well.

Lupus seems to be a general remake of the Archer by Coyote.

Maybe you can do something with the Grasshopper. I always liked that mech, too, but it disappeared from the Clans.
