Ah, that's where the quote function comes in handy. Once discussion has moved on and there are a number of posts in between the post being responded to and the response, the response can be misinterpreted as being to those posts immediately preceding it.
When the meaning of the response is clear questions can then be answered correctly, and I don't have to feel like an idiot. ;)
