Umayyad culture in the Catillian worlds

Did the Umayyads just adopt the ancient Umayyad culture when they arrived or was it a part of them prior to the initial invasion? Because it seems very odd that they would latch onto the enemies view of them.

it resembles the moorish invasion of spain to a certain extent. centuries of intermingling actually created a fairly creolized culture. some of the residue remained even after the reconquista. the universe as a whole isn't socially granulated enough to observe the less savory parts of social integration.

Umayyd and Castilian cultures are like the Japanese culture of the dracs anyway: a distorted view of what they used to be in 1000-1200 in the Iberian peninsula.

Yes but did the Umayyads have that culture already or did they take it because the Castilians described them that way?

They simply took the culture on after the Castilians dubbed them Umayyads. Perhaps for psychological shock but they would definitely resemble very little of historical Umayyad culture.

TTS Valencia talks about the destruction of the Umayyads' history after their arrival. My guess is that they had some superficial things in common with the ancient group(enough for the Castilians to apply the name), and after a few generations of intermarriage with conquered Castilians, Castilian stereotypes were all they had left.

It's possible they didn't even have a name for themselves beyond "Us". By all accounts they were originally a very tiny group, and how many of us folks actually bother to come up with a name for their closest circle of friends and family?

i like to think that the rogue military group that became the Umayyads had a large number of Azami troops, possible even a unit akin to the later Arkab legions. which would both explain why the Castilian's immediately labelled them based on a similar historical group, and why the invaders were so willing to adopt that identity for themselves.
