Stackable hexes that are each 1 level high?
« on: 13 November 2019, 09:30:56 »
Hi all,

Would anyone know where to get stackable hexes that are each exactly 1 hex in size (32mm, I think?) and exactly 1 level high. For example stacking 2 such hexes would create an obstacle exactly 2 levels high. (Most likely from a 3D printing source.)

The background: we play Alpha Strike using the hex conversion rules. But we also find it much simpler to use WYSIWYG (i.e. minis) LOS rules rather than figuring it out manually. So if we had the stackable hexes, we could just put the two mechs at the right heights, put the obvious intervening terrain at the right height, and use a laser pointer or eye level view to establish LOS.

Thanks in advance!

Seriously though, get Pink Insulation foam 1" thick, and cut to size, either with a Sharp X-Acto knife, or a foam cutter:

I would suggest Open WarHex

It is fully modular, has terrain rings to put trees and all other sorts of markers around, and is completely compatible with Heroscape tiles.

This image shows some of the board in action, combined with Heroscape, although it isn't stacked very high https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/611616715784323072/615426498614132766/0713191824a_HDR.jpg

This this and this lol. It's easy and fast depending on how much detail you want.

I go with the pink (really purple) foam approach, two will block for most mechs and gives you a lot of flexibility along with detail at a really light weight.  I have a 5 level high mesa that I am really wanting to try out in a battle.

Print a hex grid or mapsheet, and cut out the hexes representing the hill shape you want. Then glue the cutout to the foam.  Hot wire cutters usually don't get hot enough to burn the paper so it acts as a template.

Or better still, if you have access to CNC Mill Machine :D

Don't have one of those handy... but I do have an epilog laser cutter that can be throttled back so it will burn terrain patterns into the surface.

Besides foam, plain corrugated cardboard works well to (it creates an effect that is visually very nice, although pieces won't line up nicely):

And on another note, I was actually working on a 3D printable version:

Thanks all! Will check out Open Warhex and also Pink Foam :)

Great idea to print out hexes for the foam.
