Overview:
The development of the original Gyrfalcon was an odd one. Despite being a
standard 'Mech and therefore by Clan norms more suited to second-line service,
it carried a number of advanced and experimental technologies that were
expensive, and difficult to produce and maintain. The reveal of the Gyrfalcon
II, however, suggests that the original was in effect a testbed for
technologies to be applied to an Omni chassis. The Gyrfalcon II represents the
premium application of technology to an Omnimech design, and is designed to be
the 'last word' in Jade Falcon Medium 'Mechs.


Capabilities:
Central to the Gyrfalcon II's construction is its incredible jumping distance.
Capable of leaping 300 meters in a single bound, it is one of the hardest
battlefield targets to actually track and hit, rivalling and even exceeding
most Light 'Mechs. In conjunction with this, a near-full load of 11 tons of
armour means that it will take more than a few lucky hits to put one down:
indeed, in terms of sheer survivability on the battlefield, the Gyrfalcon II
rivals most Assault 'Mechs. This manoeuvrability and protection comes at a
cost, however, as even with an XL Engine and Endo Steel internals the Gyrfalcon
II carries only 16 tons of weapons and equipment. That being said, it is often
able to defeat more heavily-armed opponents through sheer attrition, with its
medium weapons load well-compensated for in terms of its ability to blindside
its opponents with its manoeuvrability. While it carries Standard Armour and
regular Double Heatsinks instead of its forebear's Reflective armour and Laser
coolers (mainly as a concession to available space due to the bulk of its
Improved Jumpjets and to ease of manufacturing, respectively), the Gyrfalcon II
does take advantage of several very recent technological innovations in a
number of its configurations, and represents the next stage in Battlemech
evolution.


The Primary configuration of the Gyrfalcon II is a duelling design through and
through. With twin Large Pulse Lasers tied into a Targeting Computer, it is
capable of confounding enemies by constantly jumping and 'plinking' at range
while enjoying the superior accuracy that its pulse weaponry and Targeting
Computer provides. A pair of Micro Pulse Lasers were added almost as an
afterthought, granting it the ability to engage unarmoured units when the need
arises.


The Gyrfalcon II's A variant is a vicious close-in scrapper. A quartet of
Medium Pulse Lasers deliver effective punch, with twin Streak SRM-6 units
giving it the capability to inflict significant 'splatter' damage.


The driving force behind the Gyrfalcon II's B variant is that of the classic
one-two punch of penetrating and diffuse damage concentration. Its Improved
Heavy Large Laser can completely strip away enemy armour in just a few hits
(with solid slug rounds from the Autocannon providing additional power), with
the LB10-X's cluster rounds quickly capitalising on breaches.


Variant C of the Gyrfalcon II focuses on the multi-range capabilities of twin
ATM-9 launchers. While some regard the Improved ATMs of the Society's weapons
programs to be stained with their dishonour, time and the current cultural
shift for Clan Mechwarriors to be less hidebound has meant that their usage is
gradually seeing acceptance (that said, a subvariant using regular ATMs is
always available for Mechwarriors who still view the usage of iATMs as an
affront). A single Improved Heavy Medium Laser provides additional close-range
punch.


The Gyrfalcon II D's weapons package is entirely energy-focussed, and is both
highly-damaging and resistant to weapon loss. Its main suite of weapons are the
ER PPC and twin Improved Heavy Medium Lasers, however a quartet of ER Medium
Lasers (though not sufficient heatsinks to allow their simultaneous use with
the main weapons) has been added in order to ensure that should one or more
weapons be destroyed, the Gyrfalcon II can still maintain a high rate of fire
thanks to planned redundancy of systems.


An odd variant amongst so many focussed on heavy combat, the Gyrfalcon II's E
configuration is an electronic marvel. With an Active Probe, TAG, and an Angel
ECM Suite, it seems designed to act in support of its Starmates - another
indication of increased openness to less 'clanlike' methods of waging war.
Three ER Medium Lasers provide personal protection and a Laser AMS enhances its
survivability. An LRM-20 unit in the Left Arm appears at first to be the main
'punch' of this design, however reports of the  Gyrfalcon II E in action
suggest that it tends to be used in a support aspect as well, with various
specialty munitions used in a tactical manner rather than for dealing direct
damage. This combination of factors allows the configuration to act as both a
scout and as a dedicated support 'Mech.


The F variant of the Gyrfalcon II is a harassment design. Carrying an ER Large
Pulse Laser, it can reliably deal damage at ranges previously unheard of by all
but the most specialised ballistic or artillery weapons. An ER PPC in the
Centre Torso assists it in dealing with anything that the laser flushes out.


Finally, the Gyrfalcon II G appears to be a testbed configuration designed to
ape the damage output of the original Gyrfalcon. It does this by exchanging the
twin LB-2X cannons of the original for a single Ultra Autocannon. While this
slightly reduces the effective range and the flexibility of the design, its raw
damage at range is roughly identical. That being said, the G variant has not
appeared in combat much since the design's inception, lending credence to its
development more as a proof-of-concept rather than a battlefield mainstay.
