This Old Fart is laughing his butt off that some of you kids are JUST NOW seeing what I saw back in' 86, without anyone pointing it out to me. ;D

And somewhere in the fluff in the old Dropships and Jumpships book it mentions a Holovid series called 'The RFL-3N" even! Granted, the show was before MY time a bit, but even I saw reruns of The Rifleman! Even the custom 'Mechs I've designed, either on paper or with HMPro I gave them number-letter designators that were included in their names. Granted, you've got a few oddballs here and there. ::)

Even back 30 years ago (hello TRO:3025 2nd printing!) I thought it was a deliberate choice at shorthand and was more curious about the ones that didn't match the name.

GRF-1N. my brain has been completely compartmentalizing each side of the dash not noticing they used the variant designation to spell out the rest of the word. and now i'm cranky my eyes were opened this way after thirty damn years

Funnily enough, both of them have different designations in german translations, Tarantula being TRN and the Fireball being FBL.

I do wonder if there's any sort of fluff explanation why their code doesn't match their name like with pretty much every other mech
