A 3 ton Field Kitchen fits on a support vehicle to the tune of 1 slot, and support vehicles are notably and explicitly in the rules text space-inefficient things.  Same goes for MASH units.  LB-20Xs can be pod-mounted, and they take 11 crits at a time.  Hell, an Arrow IV can be pod-mounted.  They can be crewed by support staff and other infantry.

That restriction continues to make no sense.

Kansas City players, or people who are just passing through the area, come join us at the Geekery just off Shawnee Mission Parkway for BattleTech!  Current days are Tuesdays in the afternoon and evening.  I can't make every single week, but odds are pretty good that somebody will be there.

Look, man. The chefs just got tired of spilling boiling soup over themselves while the 'Mech rumbled around the battlefield. I'm not sure what's so hard to understand about this!  ;D

Now I can't get the mental image of the chef from Little Mermaid being some AFFS field chef completely losing his **** over what the Centurion Omni did to his packed up field kitchen.  You thought him chasing one little crab around was bad?

I would agree with the other posters that using heavy or assault mechs to support infantry may be wasteful (putting aside you use what you have situations) . . . they may have infantry supporting them- following along behind to guard the flanks by unloading from APCs to occupy woods or buildings.

The two arms are mutually supporting, but the infantry is what ultimately forces the civilians to acknowledge your conquest so the mechs are considered to be supporting the infantry even if the mech is an Atlas and the infantry is armed with antique bolt action rifles.  The infantry keep the enemy infantry from getting the opportunity to effectively attack the mech.  The mech keeps enemy mechs and tanks from killing the infantry.  An infantry support mech is one that isn't trying to do everything and won't outrun its infantry.

In the modern era any omni can be considered infantry support because it isn't at risk of outrunning armored infantry that's riding on it.  And the BA that can't ride an omnimech tends to also be too heavy for that ultimate infantry role of oppressing or liberating people where they live.  At least if there are any multistory buildings or basements.

Yup. Infantry in cities have two states - "I am eenweenceeble!" and splortched. The big thing is that, properly dug in, it usually takes multiple turns(sometimes several) to change a platoon from the former state to the latter, more time than many players are willing to accept, especially if there's many such platoons on the map, and armored units that also need to be engaged.

Bring inferno missiles and plasma weapons: see how long the infantry are willing to occupy that building while it's on fire.

Regarding the SLDF, the 'Mechs canonically used for infantry support include the Thorn, Sentinel, Vulcan, & Hoplite. All for fall generally within the guidelines we've been describing for performance.

IIRC the 3025 fluff for the Scorpion also had it as an Infantry Support Mech.

Very true, though there are situations where lighting a city on fire might be ill advised. Holes can be fixed, but ashes can only be swept up.

When you're talking about bringing the whole building down, I figure that setting it on fire isn't going to be an issue.  I mean, from an in-universe standpoint (rather than looking at the tabletop rules), any time you destroy a building there's a high chance of fire breaking out anyway.
