Solid review, thanks!  I generally liked the movie too, but was simlarly annoyed by the glossing over of important bits, especially the "AF" bit, given my profession.  As I recall, the 1970s version got at least that right.

Yeah, the intel game was big early in the 1970 version, with the triumphant "MIDWAY!" when they got confirmation that "AF NEEDS WATER" in the comm traffic.

How much on the Battle of the Coral Sea did they include?  I was worried with Emmerich that it was going to either be explosion porn or some kind of Baysian 'MURICA FOREVER sort of thing...especially with that "the untold story" BS in the tagline.

At least it's something to give some respect to those who fought.

Taking the two movies together and intercutting them would fill gaps from both...
But the CGI of the ships was gorgeous.  And in all fairness to Woody, following Henry Fonda is pretty tough.  I wasn't impressed with the guys playing Spruance or Rochefort.

I really liked the scene where the Zero pilot is circling his burning carrier looking at his fuel gage.  I'll probably watch this again the way I watch Top Gun, fast forwarding to the flying scenes.

They didn't cover the Battle of Coral Sea very extensively.  Again, there's this balancing act of how much do you cover of what events that led up to Midway.  They struggled with that (and some dialogue in the film.)

I like the name "ammo dump" for the podcast.  just my 0.02.

Also I do want to thank you for your perspective.  I have been a IT PM the last 10 years in various corp environments.  Really sick of it all, many of the same reasons you listed.  Especially when I would say meeting after meeting "project needs  a decision and some action or won't deploy." and then after months of no decisions, people were perplexed and playing the blame game on why the project wasn't deploying on time.  So... next week I hopefully start my new career as a professional pilot. Its probably going from the devil I know to the devil I don't know.  But hey, its a change.  Thanks for helping drive that final nail into the coffin of my corporate ladder aspirations!   :'( ;D :D

I'm not a professional pilot, but I know a few... Best of luck with the career change, and all I can really say is that people are people, and bureaucracies are everywhere...

There's so much weirdness in Snord's Irregulars that being German I'm probably missing out on a zillion US cultural references there. Looking forward to that podcast!

Oh, and as for the title: I like the nonfunctional angle. Ammo Dump sounds too much like an Atlas  hunkering down behind a building. And in BattleTech you're not an old fart until your eleventy-first birthday or something like that... though life being cheap there, many die young. And even at eleventy-one you may or may not count as solahma if you're cool enough. Paul Moon sends his regards.

I could no longer stand by while lesser men and women claimed credit for my work or made my job a living hell.  I didn't help you...you knew the right answer all along.  I merely stated the obvious.

I like Ammo Dump too.

This might be a dumb question; but I have always wondered and never been able to figure it out on my own. However; since the OP probably met the guy:

Are this Loren Coleman http://lorencoleman.com/

And the Loren Coleman who has written in BT the same person?

Thanks!

My review of the movie Midway.

I made this movie a reward to myself after a week of tests and I was pretty pleased; the fake AA-guns were very badly done, however and I feel like the CGI for the Arizona was inaccurate. The deck layout when they are trying to get across to the other ship looks just wrong.

All in all though? It was worth staying out stupid-late to watch and then work the next day. I'll buy it when I can.

They are not the same person, and apparently aren't related either.

The old Leading Edge RPG was more of a traditional RPG.  It was, essentially, a combat system with skills attached.  This new version focuses heavily on role-playing.

Could it be because Clint Eastwood is a proud conservative?

Doubt it. Possibly more likely that there is a big difference between being inaccurate like Argo and impugning the reputation of a real person. If she was alive the producers would most likely be the subject of a defamation suit. I suspect that if she was alive that the bar scene wouldn't have been made.

I think that your impression that the scene was there as a metaphorical device is true but if that is the case then why use a real person? It is sloppy.  The FBI character is a composite so why not make a new character up if you want to use them for a moral lesson?

Of note, her paper is the inly one that didn't settle with Jewell and the only one found not guilty of defamation against him. Making her an even less suitable character for the point Eastwood wants to make.

What an odd coincidence to have the same non-standard spelling of their name
