Boredom Workshop

I like designing stuff for battletech. It's what drew me to the game in the first place, and it is what has drawn me back to it. I also have a lot of free time at work and am often bored.

So here is what I propose:
You give me a story, or fluff, or even a design purpose, and I work out a design for you. You keep giving me material, I keep giving you designs. The more detail you give me, the closer to what you want it will be. Feel free to give me projects that need me to do some research first, and feel free to engage in some back and forth to refine a design that is not quite what you want yet.

When I look at them I think Cannon, but could also see them as Thunderbolt Missiles or Arrow IV launchers as well, all depending on how big the unit ends up being. For the Lowtech, I am actually thinking Rifles might be appropriate.

Do you want a lowtech/standard/upgrade version of each of mod 1, 3, and 5? Or do you want a low tech 1, standard 3, upgraded 5? EDIT They could also be a number of other things if I do 1 as a protomech, industrial mech, or Battle Armor; do you want them all as battlemechs?

When you say lowtech, are you talking 3025, or even lower? For standard I assume 3050 inner sphere, if you want that to change let me know. When you say upgrade, how high-tech can I go with it?

Design purpose: VIP protection and riot interdiction.  Less-than-lethal option get bonus points, and so does including ways to make Shielding more effective with damage reducing equipment/armor.

I could probably whip something up myself, but I'm interested to see what you'd come up with.

Do you specifically want a mech or is any chassis type available? Is this for the super rich interstellar corp execs or is this for small time planetary officials?

Industrial/Security 'Mech gets the most points, standard 'Mech comes next, and vehicles are certainly acceptable.  Designer is a specialty firm trying to market a unit of questionable need to governments of... shall we say dubious stability. ;)

Risk 2210 MODs 1, 3 and 5.

Since Risk is a game that lets you switch out 3 MOD 1s for a MOD 3 or a MOD 3 and 2 MOD 1s for a MOD 5, I decided to make them 20 tons, 60 tons, and 100 tons respectively.

I know we talked about the MOD 1 having either a missile or a cannon, and that it looked like a cannon to me, but with it's small size no lowtech cannon felt right for it. This lead it down a different path than I originally intended, but I like how it turned out.

For MOD 1, I envisioned it's line starting off as a light 20 industrial mech designed to deal with liquid spills, and interchangeable with fire departments, equally able to clean up a mess as put a fire out. When converted to combat they filled it's tanks with corrosive acid and sent it to battle. The naturally progressed into flamers in the succession wars, along with a major engine upgrade and resulting speed boost. Finally the latest high tech version upgrades one of it's flamers to an ER Flamer, and the other into plasma rifle, making is a quite dangerous adversary.

The Mod 3, I was working off of a side picture, adn it looked like it had functional arms, but I wasn't sure, so the early version has functionig hands and later versions put replace the hands with weapons. Either way some amount of messing around with the actuators can be done.

The MOD 3 began life and an experimental mining mech, using a large laser to burn drill away at a rock face. It did not perform very well, but was ideally suited to join the ranks of combatants when war broke out. When it came time to upgrade it they simply dropped a fusion engine in and replaced the hands with more large lasers. The latest variant takes this even further, replacing all three large lasers with large x-pulse lasers.

MOD 5 Looks like a Huge Jenner to me, and those weapons pods on it's sides look like SRM 4s. However I had decided this mech was going to be a 100 ton mech and 2 srm 4s just weren't going to cut it. So instead, I tried out a few things and eventually settled on those being cannon pods.

The original MOD 5 was a stage in the development of modern battlemechs, an industrial mech frame intended for combat from the get go. It originally sold mainly to corperations that needed security against bandits at their sites, but when wars broke out, militaries started seeing a lot more value it in the platform.

Armed with 8 AC/2s, it essentially operates as 2 very, very, very long range SRM4s (with some minor mechanical differences). When upgraded to a full battlemech the armament was upgraded by replacing 2 of the AC2s with AC10s, giving it much greater stopping power against opponents. The latest upgrade to the design changes much about it, abandoning the traditional ACs for the new Thunderbolt missiles, arming itself with 8 thunderbolt 10s, makes this mech a dangerous foe for anything that comes in range.

Design purpose: VIP protection and riot interdiction.  Less-than-lethal option get bonus points, and so does including ways to make Shielding more effective with damage reducing equipment/armor.

My first in the series, and Quad Industrial Assault mech, whose rather cheap price tag of under 6mil, is offset by maximum hardened armor, a cockpit with a command console, and an armored critical, three vehicular grenade launchers intended to create smoke screens, or be used for crown control gas (IE tear gas), and four fluid guns, which can be loaded with various fluids to help control a mob of facilitate an escape.

As a quad mech it can maneuver a little easier than a battlemech and can crouch hull down, making this chassis just a bit better for this specific purpose than a bipedal mech would be. The hardedned armor gives it unprecedented protection, even capable of sustaining a clan ERPPC or Gauss Rifle hit directly to the head without fear.

Variants replace fluid guns with LRMs with smoke rounds, able to lay down more cover, or harmlessly clear out crowds. This also gives the mech the option of becoming a bit more dangerous to an enemy force.

For the Savvy buyer we have a higher tech system in a battlemech frame. Lighter and Faster than the Assault frame, and nearly the same cost, the light Riot suppression mech comes equiped with dual MML-3s w/artemis IV with three tons of smoke and tear gas srm and lrm ammunition, and TSEMP to help disable truly unruly enemies, along with 3 grenade launchers able to deliver defensive ordnace in any direction in case the MMLs aren't enough. (the TSEMP is a bit on the high tech end of things, but it can be replaced by other things, like more ammo, or even fluid guns for riot control if you feel it doesn't fit)

The MOD 3 does not have any arms. It's a simple matter to make the lasers torso mounted. The way it was set up, though, 1 would have to have been in the head and the other two in the center torso, but, we can fluff it like the centerline cannon for the Marauder.  O0

I imagine that later MOD 1 options could include various levels of machine guns.

Something that had bothered me when I looked at the MOD 1s were the two smoke-launcher like things on either side of the cockpit canopy. I was wondering if I should turn them into SRM-4s at the time. When I designed the MOD 1, I made it 50 tones I think, went with 2 AC/5s and two 1-shot SRM-4s. I also had them a one point slower than what you went with.

I'll post my versions when I can look at the stats.

100 tons cargo (for the Mech)

Function.  Deployed from a Small craft bay, this will carry a Mech to the planet, the Mech then walks out of the Mobile Field Base, does its job, then returns to the MFB, where the Small craft launches back into orbit and is recovered by the carrying Dropship.

Rough math so far:
19.5% for engines, 50% tonnage for Mech, 10% tonnage for MFB leaves 20.5% tonnage available (41 tons assuming 200 ton small craft).

If you have to drop the cargo tonnage for the Mech, I will understand.

I am not really willing to design stuff that doesn't follow the rules, and TO pg 330 says:

Now I am not going to tell you you can't play it however you want in your own games, because you obviously can, and I think you should. You should always play the way you enjoy (tournaments excepted), but I am going to stick to the rules for anything I design.

That being said, you could do 100 ton cargo, use cargo unloading procedures to deploy the mech and cargo loading procedures to pick it back up and leave the repair stuff for when it is returned to the dropship.

Alternatively, with a mech bay, it would be 150 for the bay, 1.5 for controls, 5 for minimum SI, and 39 for a speed of 3/5, for a total of 195.5 spent, and not enough tonnage left to put the necessary crew quarters the rules need by my interpretation, still waiting on official rulings on the matter.

If all you are asking though is what would be an efficient way to spend that weight you have remaining, I would look at either a pair of arrow IV launchers or a Long Tom. You can use it to clear a landing site of your choosing and support the mech it deploys from a long way away. Don't forget to add in the required tonnage for controls (1.5 tons), and minimum structural integrity (minimum of 5 on a ship going 3/5). Armor is probably also another good idea (you can get a max of 3.6*SI tons of armor).

Personally, I don't think this is a very good idea though. It is too fragile, and not nearly as fast as a drop pod. Have you considered using a normal sized dropship and have it designed to carry an equal number of small vehicles as it does mechs, then have the vehicle bays filled with Salvage VTOLs with a bunch of lift hoists, and you basically launch the VTOLs high up in the air carrying the mechs to their deployments, and picking them back up again after? This way the dropship can still stay relatively safe, even it does have to get closer anyway. I am pretty sure that would also be a lot cheaper than designing a new small craft too.

Okay. Finally found them. I have only done the MOD 1.0 up in any form of TRo Design format. Don't know if I've finalized the MOD 3, and haven't even looked at the MOD 5 yet, because the story I'm using them for hasn't reached that stage.

I used standard intro tech (level 1) stats. The caveat is that they're supposed to be cheep, and locally made, thus not front-line quality. The manufacturer cut corners, so there are a bunch of drawbacks attached.

Anyway, the pertinent stats. Everything else is assumed to be standard for tonnage and space purposes.

Write-up:

The MOD 1.0 - Machine of Destruction version 1.0 - is a combat modification of the most popular WorkMech produced by Adam's Metals on New Earth. It was an easy modification which gave the Rebellion the numerical advantage it needed at the start of the New Earth Civil War of 3040. All of the components are locally produced and thus have performance issues and sensitivities to damage which can be exploited by a knowledgeable opponent. The only strength is their ease of maintenance and manufacture, allowing for large quantities to be quickly put onto the front lines.

Drawbacks: (BattleTech Manual Rules are generally in effect for the games I run these in. There are some tweaks and exceptions. These drawbacks are with all that in mind.)

The cockpit is subquality - The MOD is subject to all weather and daytime condition rules. This is suplemented by the use of the BattleMech sensors rules found in the Tactical Handbook. (Front line units, or units manufactured to that standard, do not suffer these restrictions.)

The internals are primitive industrial - The mass savings from not bringing the internal mechanisms and support structures up to front line standards leaves them more easily subject to breaking under severe stress. (+4 to any critical hit check rolls against this unit.)

The Armor is a slight improvement over commercial grade - (There is no BAR to check against.) The mass savings for this armor still leave it prone to failing against particularly damaging attacks. Each location has a declining damage threshold of 1/2 the remaining armor points. This includes the head. Because it is assumed that standard front-line munitions have an armor piercing capacity, any standard autocannon firing standard munitions gets to double its strength value only when checking for threshold breaches.

The Autocannons are sub-quality - even though there are a couple manufacturers on New Earth that can supply high-grade Autocannons, they are nominally on the side of the loyalists. To make up for this, and to get the shear quantity needed to outfit a large army, Adams has resorted to manufacturing its own weapons and munitions. These ACs are prone to exploding if critted and can potentially jam. The jam is clearable during battle.

The munitions are sub-quality - Locally built, the missiles and bullets fielded by the MOD 1s are not up to standard munition quality. They have to fire rounds dedicated to a certain task: Armor piercing rounds to hurt armored units, Anti-personnel rounds to mow down people, Explosive rounds to hurt terrain. When fired at a target that is outside those parameters, they suffer damage penalties.
 
The engine isn't reinforced - Being a low grade fusion engine with over-sensitive safety protocols, any engine damage will shut it down automatically.
