Dropship Mech Bays by MWO
« on: 06 June 2012, 14:41:51 »
I was wondering what folks think about Dropship Mechbays as represented by the MWO animation and the art showing the lay out?  Is it like you always pictured?

For ships like a Union, I imagine a circular room with the mech bays themselves recessed into the walls.  For a Leopard I envisioned the mechs being in more open gantries with access to the front and back, with a small cruciform open area in the middle of the 4 bays.

In each case the open areas would have O-rings mounted on the floor to secure gear, as well as mouting points for complex equipment where necesary.

For the Leopard, I always assumed the mech bays were right behind the roll up doors in its sides. No centralized bay, no airlock. Each mech is literally carried just in transit with only a single large door holding the air in.

Little different for every type of drop-ship but for the most part, yes.

I'm also in agreement with evilauthor on my percieved layout of the Leopard's 'mech bays.  Having a big open space in the middle of the dropship weakens the structure, so the keel/spine needs to go straight down the middle.

Nothing says the spine does not go down the middle . . . its just the top and not the bottom like a blue water vessel.

I was more talking about the open spaces, gantries and operations.  For instance, the Atlas does not walk around the bay, the 'rack' in the cubicle moves it then ejects it.

That's sorta what I was trying to describe, but instead of the bay being walled at that back, like, say the MWDA Aurora DropShip's mini, that side opens up into a very small common area.
