Bombardier BMB-12H (2771 Refit)

I conceived of this after using this 'Mech time-and-again in Star-League-era games. The Bombardier's logistics are not conducive to long-term operations without putting themselves and the ammunition dump in serious danger. Any prolonged engagement would seriously expose the BMB-12D, stripping away whatever justification existed for the cost of an extra-light engine.

My re-imagining is the logical conclusion crews and designers would reach after a combat situation. The LRM-20 racks are too large and under-supplied with ammunition to be anything but a mere annoyance. The large racks are replaced for a more efficient LRM-15 with Artemis-IV fire control, wasting less missiles and saving enough tonnage to add 4 more tons of reloads to lengthen time in the field. The SRM-4, itself a liability due to a perpetually full ammunition bin, is traded for a pair of Small Pulse Lasers, meant to deal with short-ranged line breaches and infantry swarms.

As much as the dual 20s are nice, I can see this as a definite upgrade. The Bombardier has crippling ammo deficiencies in most configs, and any boost to endurance makes it much better. Of course, I’d love to see a ComStar refit in the future, possibly with either an Endo-Steel or Ferro+rear AMS swap for a C3i, probably the former.

Doesn't this refit completely alter the purpose for which the Bombardier was created. It was supposed to be an artillery mech, a Royal model Archer may be a better choice than the Bombardier.

Its description as an "artillery 'Mech" doesn't make sense. A Sniper artillery piece can hit from miles away and the BMB-12D can't even come close to that. But beyond that, its original purpose was (per TRO:2750) to carry Swarm and Thunder munitions to the battlefield and deploy them. With only three tons of ammo... you're not doing that very well. And especially when you consider the $14,000,000 SLD price tag. Downgrading to LRM-15s gives you 6 tons of ammo (24 shots) to work with and a longer rate of sustained fire. That's a more efficient "support unit" than something that needs to withdraw after only 6 turns.

FYI - If it's an "artillery 'Mech" that's not supposed to see direct combat... why waste three tons on an SRM-4 + ammo? The old TROs just made no sense. lol

I would minmax it, switch to 6 LRM5s, gives you 2 more tons, granted its also 2 more iirc

I agree about the SRM's, a small pulse laser or standard medium on each arm and an extra ton of ammo would be better. But the SLDF did have over-specialised mechs like the Sling for minelaying only so the Bombardier fits in with that, however an ARROW IV artillery mech would have been a better idea.

This would be a true "artillery" variant, trading the 2 x LRM-20 and ammo for a single Arrow-IV launcher, 6 tons of ammo, and an onboard TAG for close defense/spotting for its Lancemates. And, as before, additional ammunition is provided to make sure it stays in the field for a lengthy duration and with enough bin space to have a wide variety of missile types. i.e.: fill its actual mission profile of spreading FASCAM mines and dispersing enemy formations (re.: swarm LRM).

Until 3050, no weapon beats the medium laser. I wanted to try something purposely not optimized. Something between "good" and the waste of space that is the BMB-12D. lol
