Id love to see more things like this done. Different constraints, and differing degrees of pressure for those constraints.
So would I.
The year is 3029. The Federated Suns (selected by 1d6 die roll) has set up a board to plan how to apply the new technology. You are on that board for the Department of the Army. The representatives from the Department of the Quartermaster has requested that the board minimize the number of different pieces of advanced technology that need to be produced. They would like you to pick as small a number of advanced components as you think viable and propose upgrades for as many mechs produced or existing with large stockpiles in the Federated Suns as possible with them. The target number of technologies is four, but if you can do good refits for everything with less that's a bonus and going to five isn't an automatic disqualifier if they're all really well used. Star League lostech reintroduced before 3049 and succession wars experimental tech count as advanced tech.
The same technology other than armor in a different size counts as a different thing to produce. Ammo types don't formally count, but if you go overboard on adding new ammo types the DoQM will get grumpy. Also, over-sized engines are permitted. When over-engining things assume they're functioning as the rounded down rating but hide their real rating's heatsinks. Eg. if you put a 240 XL in a Centurion it weighs 6 tons and hides 9 heatsinks, but since it's acting like a 200 rated engine it only needs a 2 ton gyro.
The Department of the Navy expects to be stuck with scraps and will lobby for any army proposal that they think includes components that are good for them. To clarify, in the AFFS the Navy is in charge of ASFs. Anything warship related is not under this board's purview. This is only about components produced for the mech refit program that are also useful for the starfighter corps.
Assume this is an AU where the FedCom is not a full union with tech sharing and military integration. Katrina Steiner and Arthur Luvon had a son instead of a daughter or Dana Stephenson survived Halstead or something. You're just looking at FedSuns designs to refit, not FedCom. Also disregard any preconceived notions about what the AFFS should use. For the purposes of this exercise it's just a list of mechs to refit. If three of your four tech picks are pulse lasers your AU Federated Suns is fanatically obsessed with blinking lights.

In that scenario, the obvious easy answer is simply... DHS for all my friends! They're cheap and hugely effective. Many 'mechs don't need to adjust anything else (looking at you, Rifleman, and all your variants). The ones that can be tweaked maybe gain a couple of extra weapons, or (more) jump jets.

And then Ferro-Fibrous armor and CASE, everything uses standard engines so CASE makes any design that would be destroyed from an ammo explosion retain some combat capability.

DHS works on a lot of machines, but those with 10 HS anyway don't get any weight benefits. LB10 conversions for all AC10 machines would absolutely be a thing, using the extra ton for CASE and an armor bump, or else scrape half a ton of armor off for CASE and the extra ton goes to ammo.
Enforcer gets a nice bump, nothing as extravagant as the -5D but still nice.

Dropped two HS and upgraded the other ten, that plus the weight savings of the LB10 gave me a three ton mass budget. Pulled the SL, replaced it with an ML for improved firepower, then added CASE for two half-ton bumps to the design. Another ton of ammo took half the rest, while an armor improvement overall finished it off - and now it can risk falling on its back and NOT blowing up. Seriously what the hell is with rear armor that can't protect against a five point fall?
It's not the 5/8/5 ERLL/LB10 combo, but it's not a bad stop on the way, and certainly a lot less expensive - for the price of one 5D you can have two of these and some cash left over.
I'd add a conversion of the Centurion, but MML is being weird at me. Simply put, swap the AC for an LB, swap ammo, add two CASE slots (one for each torso, gotta protect the LRMs), and frankly you're done. 20 rounds of AC ammo, 24 rounds of LRM ammo, two MLs, go to town.

So my line of thinking is this. Endo Steel almost always gives you more bang for your buck then Ferro-Fibrous. Double Heat Sinks are a true game changer. LB-10X is another no-brainer for the autocannon nation. Finally, I could have gone CASE or Gauss Rifle for the last one but ER PPC is easier to fit into multiple designs than a Gauss Rifle and I think it edges out the CASE slightly for the ability to snipe at ranges greater than LRMs

In terms of components, DHS first, ferro-fibrous second (easier to add it to existing designs as a field refit), ER lasers and PPCs, LB-10X ACs (Davion, duh...), and finally Guardian ECM. Endo-steel would be a relatively low priority as it requires a new design process from the ground up and can't be added as a simple field refit, as is XL technology. Gauss rifles would be a lower priority if simplicity and streamlined production and upgrades are of a necessity, as are Ultra AC/5s.
For the AFFS Navy, expand that into naval gauss technology, then naval autocannon and finally naval PPCs and AR launchers. Start like the Fox-class corvettes, but rapidly expand into heavy cruisers with massed batteries of naval autocannons and missile launchers. Think along the lines of the protected cruisers of the late 19th century and early 20th century as a design philosophy.
Using the Enforcer as an example of this design philosophy, here's what I would envision such a refit looking like, sans the fluff.

Ferro is very easy to add, but doubles the cost of all your armor losses, so it's not exactly a good budget decision. CASE, on the other hand, is something I should have mentioned. It's light, and can absolutely save money in the long run. Endo-steel is relatively inexpensive but requires a lot of expensive orbital infrastructure. I also agree Davion would never be able to resist LB-10X upgrades across the force. Heck, the AC/10 Rifleman becomes quite decent:

Pretty much. You're overhauling the whole AFFS on paper. Design studies are cheap.
The Navy is in charge of all ASF forces. They will get behind proposals that include components that are good for refitting ASF. They won't get behind mech only stuff like endo or ferro-fibrous and are probably less keen on CASE than the army because so many ASF are pure energy boats.
I'll go ahead and say the Navy is hoping for DHS, the 300 rated XLFE and one good raygun but they don't have the pull to demand them. (Every single fighter Trace Coburn lists as produced in the Federated Suns benefits from the 300 XLFE, though the Corsair and Lightning need to find a ton of savings elsewhere and everything but the Sabre and Sparrowawk benefit from DHS) Other XLFE ratings are of less interest, but not necessarily of no interest. 240s or 245s are good for the Sparrowhawk and Hellcat. 250s or 255s are good for the Centurion and Lightning and as oversized 240s.

No. You can use 2750 standard tech (ie. stuff in the Helm Memory Core) plus blazers and artillery cannons (succession wars experimental tech) with anything but introtech and full size tube artillery counting against the advanced component limit.

I'm pretty sure they do. Autocannons have been stated to be their thing for a while now going back as far as the Hammerhands.

Hardly anachronistic; their primary medium 'Mechs both run AC/10s - the Enforcer and the Centurion. And the AC10-LB10 swap is gains in every direction - less weight, fewer crits, lower heat, longer range, and better ammunition. NOT taking it, except in extremely tight circumstances, is really questionable IMO. Add in the fluff of the Victor being the primary assault for the AFFS, and it never changes the AC20 out in the era. I'd say they're fans of autocannons, especially larger ones, in that era and that it's hardly pandering.
Now granted there are common machines that get the beam gun treatment - look at the MAD-3D and RFL-4D, for example. Even the BLR-1D goes almost completely energy weapons, outside those MGs in the arm. But even the Rifleman has the twin-AC10 version, right from Hanse Davion's own head. Again, LB10 swap.
You know, with the Rifleman and the Marauder examples, it certainly looks like the Suns likes big autocannons but not the little ones - they both pull the AC5s, while things with AC10s and 20s keep them around. Add in the Blackjack swapping its AC2s for energy weapons, and there's definite preference to get rid of AC2 and AC5 in favor of energy weapons, but keeping the larger autocannons - and really working the AC10.

Seriously, Artillery Cannons are dangerous. Area effect weapons do a number on anything that relies on defensive modifiers for survival.
And Blazer Cannons are just plain cool, especially with DHS on the table... ^-^

I agree with most of the folks
#1 is DHS
#2 is case
#3 is 300xls and 240s if they can get them both
#4 is LB10x, ACs have been a Davion thing for over a century, but
once ERPPCs become a thing, the ACs lose a lot of luster
Ferro is ok, but expensive,
Endo I would prefer, especially for most new heavy and assault builds, essentially its only good for new construction, to add it to an existing unit requires literally stripping it to the bones, if your doing that just build new to begin with

Here's what I think the Federated Suns would do with their primary heavy 'Mech, the Marauder MAD-3D. In this case, the -4D. By using all energy weapons, you lose the need for CASE, and replacing the standard armor with ferro-fibrous armor is a relatively straight-forward upgrade. The biggest challenge from an engineering standpoint would be the upgrade to DHS made necessary by the ER energy weapons.

That 3Dm is a mean one, though I'm not sure - you'd FRY if you tried to alpha, and everything has very similar rangebands. I'd almost suggest swapping the LLs for twin MLs, and the extra six tons into HS if you can to it.
That said, the thing's a mean one and can still unload a lot of gunpower even missing an arm. I like.

I've made two changes to the original post. Firstly, do not include warship stuff in your list. If there's a Fox program without the FedCom alliance it's classified at a higher level than you have access to. Second, please disregard any preconceptions about the faction's preferred weapons. "Because that's what they had OTL" is the one reason for picking a weapon that I do not want to see either here or if I go on to do HTAB threads for other houses. It runs contrary to the whole point of the exercise.
You are also not convincing me that the autocannon obsession is anything other than flanderization from after the canonical timeline jumped the shark. Please stop trying, or at least do so outside the Fan Designs and Rules section. It probably makes the mods grumpy and it certainly sidetracks the thread.

Denied Warships, the Smithforge Industries Design Studies Group suggests a refit and production focus on the following 4 technologies and the following 5 Battlemech Designs. All battlemech designs are produced inside the Federated Suns, can be reliably sourced from non-hostile powers, or exist in sufficient numbers that conversion of existing designs will meet foreseeable need until production can be tooled up. Second, it can be applied to an entire range of Battlemech Chassis meeting all major battlefield roles - reducing costs through mass production and simplifying logistics support and train. Finally, though fragility is an issue, an increase in firepower and armor across the board offsets increased cost by silencing enemy fire before it can be decisive.
2.) The Freezer
Given the history of NAIS work on the Freezer, it is better positioned for massed production and distribution than any other 'Star League' technology. Further, it is the singular most powerful force multiplier for battlemech and areospace fighter forces.
3.) Endo-Steel Structures
While Ferro-Fibrous armor is easier to add, Endo-Steel offers substantial weight savings across all chassis, adds little to battlemech cost, and requires less continuous support once fielded than does Ferro-Fibrous armor.
4.) The LB-10X Autocannon
A winner in a tight run race with the ER PPC and ER Large Laser, it was felt that SOME advanced weapon should be a part of the mix. Of such weapons, the LB-10X is advantageous by sharing a range commonality with the existing PPCs in the force structure, while being a near drop-in replacement for the existing AC-10s. Greater flexibility allows a single machine to address multiple battlefield roles. Finally, the other considered weapon system (ER-PPC), although supported by the introduced freezer, demanded so many freezers that (in conjunction with Endo-Steel above) it proved prohibitive in terms of internal volume.
An alternate design proposal eschewing both Endo-Steel and the XL Engine, coupled with increased DHS useage and the avoidance of ammunition bearing weapons in favor of beams is available for continued analysis if such is desired. Until such time, further design work on proposal 'Zombie' is shelved.
AS-8D "Command Atlas"
The Command Atlas is striking in its visual similarity to its Star League predecessor, with most differences being under the hood. Its name serves from the installation of a full scale command console, allowing a large unit commander to focus on the battlefield picture while a subordinate controls the immediate action of the machine. In smaller units, or where the commander wishes to retain personal control, the second seat and full support of the command console allows the command machine to coordinate fires, call for support, analyze ongoing tactical situations, or otherwise support leadership and coordination functions.
Once combat is opened, the Command Atlas couples the missile launchers of its parent design with a massive upgrade in ranged firepower. The LB-10X cannon replaces the older Class 20, offering increased range to offset the loss in firepower. Two Particle Cannon join the existing medium lasers on the arms, while the aft mounted lasers are moved forward. Oversized cooling shrouds from the original medium lasers serve to disguise the change, leaving opponents uncertain as to which model they face until the 'medium laser' mounts release twin bolts of lighting. This combination gives the command Atlas awesome firepower at extended ranges, and its modern heat sinks coupled with increased energy weaponry allows it to outshoot its venerable forefather at all but point blank range - where no command Mech should be found.

Marauder MAD-4D "Double Marauder"
The upgrade to an endo-steel chassis, coupled with a lighter engine and access to freezers allows extensive weight savings coupled with reduced heat burder. The existing AC/5 is upgraded with the new LB10-X model, and a second, matching mount is placed on the opposite shoulder. Armour is increased to near maximum, and matched ammo bins allow the LB-10X cannon to join the PPCs in making holes in enemy armor, then follow up with cluster rounds to exploit them. In addition, the same cluster technology supported by PPC Fire allows the Doublerauder (so named by the test pilots) to provide heavy AAA support to a unit under fire.
The increased vulnerability inherit in the XL engine is a concern to pilots, but it is felt that increasing the level of armored protection to better that of many assault mechs addresses this. Test pilots have also recommended pulling one or both of the medium lasers for additional ammunition storage - this suggestion is under review.

Crusader CR4-DB
Arguably the least ambitious and yet most important refit, the Crusader Classic refit used upgraded structures, heat sinks, and engines to par weight. Coupled with an overall 5 ton slimming of the chassis, the Classic serves both as an indirect fire support machine and, once battle is closed, as the fast, heavy trooper/brawler of the force. Its lack of a single high impact weapon system like a heavy energy mount or auto cannon is remedied by the heavy point-punch firepower of surrounding machines, and its own paired heavy battle fists. Increased armor and ammunition stowage serves to improve battlefield longevity, and a pair of machine guns are mounted to address those infantry concerns where use of Inferno missiles is considered inappropriate.
In tactical employment, the Crusader will either lead, dropping back to provide missile support once armor is depleted, or will provide that initial support, moving forward to relieve its lancemates once they are accumulating damage and enemy armor has been perforated.

LCT-IIID Locust "Golden Locust"
The most extreme transformation in the line-up occured at the bottom. It was reasoned that once a mech was opened up to replace small, dense internal bracing and bones with the much larger, if lighter Endo-Steel structures - with all the adjustments required by this - it would be a relatively straightforward matter to use somewhat stronger members and increase the total weight of the chassis.
The classic Locust Design was always fast, and surprisingly well armored for that size and speed. The Golden Locust builds on that, increasing the speed over its parent by 25%, and armored protection by 75%. A mix of small and medium lasers, backed up by a pair of flamers powered off an engine tap, makes the fast, tough bug able to serve not only as deep recon or battlefield scouting roles, but also an able insurgent and dispersed raider design, able to appear over a hillside or out of the woods, close on enemy stockpiles and command structures at speeds greater than any mech (and almost all hovercraft!) currently in service, quickly ignite soft targets and blaze down hard ones, and then vanish over the horizon while a response is still organizing. On a tight battlefield, its combination of speed, resilience, and point blank punching power make it a threat to isolated enemy fire support machines - or in fact almost any machine, as a moments inattention will see the Golden Locust dashing into its back and flaying at thin armor with heavy fire.

That actually makes my point about Endo Steel over Ferro Fibrous. If you're going to be stripping the mechs to their core anyway to install DHS, you might as well retrofit the skeletons
Pulling the engine out only requires the CT to be opened. Replacing the skeleton is a whole other work intensive process where you're basically taking everything apart and rebuilding it. 'Strategic Operations' details the levels and difficulties of refits, and Endo is an E or F (IIRC). At that point, dont bother with a refit and just make it a new factory production.
Ferro may be expensive, but it is the easiest thing to replace into existing units.

It is a mean bastard, just a bit light on ammo for my taste.
Assuming this moves on to the other factions, I think I'm going to personally limit myself to sharing no more than 2 techs between each faction, just for some variety. Otherwise every mech starts looking rather same-y. Course I also went with some really odd choices which helped.

I don't like the SHD. The SSRM2 is a net negative. It uses up 2.5t, has a ton of ammo (that you'll never fire off entirely) sitting in the CT, and only provides two 2pt hits. A pair of extra MedLas work just as well and you will still never overheat it unless you jump and fire everything including the LRMs. And then use the last 0.5t for CASE.

That actually makes my point about Endo Steel over Ferro Fibrous. If you're going to be stripping the mechs to their core anyway to install DHS, you might as well retrofit the skeletons
Not really.
DHS are Class-D & can be done in a bay, no factory needed.
Endo Steel is Class-F & requires a Factory (Just like CASE & XL Engines), even more so, manufacturing it requires orbital facilities for the Zero-G fabrication.
The fact that it has no use in upgrading your Fighter or Tank corps is also a downside.

Getting back to the OP.
If I had to limit it to just 4 technologies....
DHS & CASE since both of those were already being proto-typed Pre-Helm discovery and both do a lot for endurance.
Add to that LB10X since the Suns does like their AC10 machines.
Finally, The ERLL I think since its a nice match for the LB10 in range & the Suns have quite a few mechs that use it. (Phoenix Hawk, Enforcer, Centurion-9AL, Rifleman, Marauder off the top of my head)
