Melee Combat
« on: 08 May 2018, 04:53:00 »
Hi

I`m really new here so please be gentle as I only started playing last month.
When a unit is in melee with another unit can it shoot at another unit ?
If a tank is in melee with a mech can the tank do any damage ?

Thanks for any replies.

You are never required to shoot at the guy right next to you. The tank in question cannot shoot the mech that is B2B with him, but nothing stops him from ignoring that mech and shooting at someone else. Also, the vast majority of the time units do not interfere with line of sight, so nothing stops your tank from shooting through that mech to hit someone else.

(There are exceptions to this, but they're rare and usually require the use of a Special Pilot Ability.)

Also, welcome to the boards, and welcome to the game! :)

Yes. And barring the use of area-effect weapons or some very uncommon weirdness*, there's no real risk of hitting your buddy.

*Swarm missiles would be an issue. Nemesis pods are a thing, but extremely rarely used. In fact, this might be one of the only situations where they'd be reliably useful. Total War/TacOps has rules for missed shots hitting nearby units, but I don't recall if Alpha Strike has any optional rules to that extent.

Keep in mind that a Mech's melee reach extends a bit from the base.

So a Tank can be within the Mech's melee reach, but so long as the tank's base isn't actually in contact with the mech's base it can still shoot that mech.
