Erinyes? The protomech? or the yardship?

Maybe it's supposed to operate behind the big boy in order to deter backstabbers. (and incidentally attract them itself)

So your forces have Intro Tech, SLDF Tech, & Clan Tech all in them?
I'm thinking you play exclusively in the Republic Era or w/o faction/era limits at all?

It basically comes down to having.....
Anti-Vee
IDF
Medium Lasers  (All kinds)
Long Range Headcapper
Cheese

It's a 5 layer sandwich.

Yup, our 3150 games are open-ended.Typically, I'm playing with SLDF or early Clan tech. I also have no issues snagging Intro Tech MLs or LRMs as they're cheap and effective. I love CMPL as well but I'm conservative with them.  Don't get me wrong, I'll roll out HAGs, ATMs and other more advanced weapon systems here and there. But, I'm honestly a pretty stingy player when it comes to BV. I'll usually take more units or units with better pilots over expensive weapons.

Novel and Sourcebook Reviews / Re: Without Question

Finished it today and quite enjoyed it, enough to give it 5/5 on Goodreads. The Jade Falcons have never quite been my favourite Clan but from Aidan Pryde to Malvina Hazen there's rarely been a dull moment with them, and this novel continued that trend.

Liked both of the main characters and the overall story, even if one of them being blown up by Hasara's treachery and the death of Tomasin were sad moments. Nikita Malthus seizing power and re-instituting Mongol rule had me on edge - thankfully that didn't take. Breaking new ground past Tamar Rising was also welcome, and I'm very curious as to who is in those two DropShips at the end. Hope IKEO has the answer to that one.

Malvina's time at the helm was an interesting (if horrifying) era for the Clan, but IRL the Mongol era needed to end and this book does well at showing us the transition phase to a wiser and better Clan.

Bugsy and the mercs on Antares were an amusing addition, hope to see more of the Lone Wolves.

The re-naming of the state to Jade Falcon Free Zone was a nice touch. Hopefully this and Chistu's other reforms will stick.

I think it's even been mentioned that sometimes those spies are known but left in place because if they are swept up it stops the info flow for a while but then a new one will take over & have to be found out again which generally is not a fast or guaranteed process & involves luck & the spy making a mistake, etc etc, or just bad spy-craft but I assume the IS has methods of collecting data over the border that doesn't just involve some unseen satellites or drive by picture runs.

There is also the possibility that ROM gets one of their agents to 'leak' intel to opposing agencies via various means. One of their missions is to keep dynamic tension between the Successor States and they do have access to a wide range of sources and agents within various empires. ROM likely possesses incredible access to intimate details and do in fact control the means of conveying information interplanetary. As long as they have a reputable scapegoat to source the intel to the agency that got the intel might act on it after only minor consideration (and someone confirmation through their own agents or analysts) even though it might not be perfect and could in fact be doctored.

But yes, valid for the point 'why bother with the newbie?'

All 800 were newbies once.

One of the problems with the Clan system is that it'd only work long term if you elevate people to a new Bloodname based on their accomplishments with some frequency. There's some very obvious incentives to never do this that prevent that policy from happening.

I'm always fascinated by Mechs like this, that are supposed to have been designed for a job they're clearly unsuited for- the Snake's anti-Elemental role being another great example. That one at least had the excuse of being designed by a nation that had no experience dealing with battle armor at the time (and is a great Mech if you use it for tank-parking instead, but that's another topic entirely). This? The Compact knew what they were up against, they knew what they needed to make, and they made a thinly-armored, short-range-oriented Mech that can't realistically do better than pacing the Victors and such it's supposed to act as a 'bodyguard' for.

Which, let's stop for a moment and ask how often you've looked at a Pillager or Victor and said 'I need something to keep my giant-ass asssault Mech safe from harm'. That tends to be the role that assault is supposed to play for other units! Want to keep someone from irritating your Archers and Trebuchets? A Victor is a damned good 'go away' notice. Did the bodyguard need a bodyguard? A designated lancemate, I can see, if they'd gone with that I'd be a lot less harsh, but a BODYGUARD. That word specifically was used. Holy crap.

...Anyway, so for that role, we came up with something that has thin enough armor that Jagermech pilots aren't impressed, a weapons suite that only works at short ranges other than the Gauss (no complaints on that weapon, at least)... it's hard to find a role that this thing really works in, honestly, and sure as hell not 'bodyguard'. I do grant it this- the SRMs are nice to follow up with after the Victor/Pillager/whatever has opened holes in a target, but even then you only have a minute and change of firing before those give a loud 'NOPE' from the ammo bin. Did we maybe overreach a little here?

Let's rethink the bodyguard role for a moment. What is a threat to a Pillager? I mean other than Erinyes, because that's really the only major one. What kills a big assault Mech? Massed fire, etc., yeah, but it gives as good as it gets in that case. Airpower is a great way to get rid of an assault, and we see Pillagers, Victors... you know what, an 'escort' with an LB-10X would be a neat idea, wouldn't it? Drop that Gauss, slap on the clustergun, lose weight enough to get another ton of SRM ammo and some actual armor on board... is it a little bland? Yeah, but it's also not supposed to be flashy. It's weird to think that losing the best gun on the Mech- its only real selling feature, really- is the best way to improve it, but here we are. We already see a Gauss-heavy force coming out of St. Ives factories, so another Gauss isn't what they need- not a bad thing to have, but not a NEED. This? This would be good for exploiting Gauss holes, parking tanks, creating no-fly zones, you name it. THAT'S an escort Mech. Simple, rugged, capable, and focused.

Oh- the original miniature sucked too, to boot. I hear the resculpt in the Capellan lance pack was better, but the one on my shelf (resplendant in tan/orange camo based on the Arizona region's colors) is just wretched. Which seems to fit.

When is the second star League pack coming? We are halfway through the second quarter.

I would say everything is about 2 to 3 months late, mostly because of shipping.

Nice! You can run and fire all of the guns without worry, and jumping is heat neutral with the lasers.
A pair of Vindicators(or the Advocator)+Whitworth+this would be a nice poor man's medium lance

Honestly, I was surprised with how few 'Mechs actually use the 160 and 120 fusion engines, even if they do restrict speed and mass a lot.
The only problem with those engines are that the practical tonnage/speed combos are usually significantly inferior to something heavier/faster without bringing much in the way of cost savings.

E.g. 40 tons 4/6/4 instead of 5/8/5 gains 3 tons of payload (23 instead of 20 w/o armor) for a very significant reduction in mobility. 45 tons 4/6/4 instead of 40 tons adds 3.5 tons (26.5 instead of 23 w/o armor) for ~15% higher cost. There are similar problems with the 120 SFE.

Another great beginning.

My tuppence worth on 'The Regiment' composition is that it could be those from 171st that would have been offered a mercy death. Those soldiers that weren't immediate kills but those the medics could not save.
