Personal Equipment of the Bastion
« on: 21 November 2023, 22:51:45 »
Bastion Armor Kit:

The standard uniform of the Bastion is based around an advanced full body suit inspired by the lightweight spacesuits popular among the spacer community, and incorporating the same advanced materials that go into dermal armor implants. This base layer, or skinsuit, is light, comfortable, and allows enough freedom of movement to be worn under standard body armor or fatigues to provide an extra layer of protection from harm.
Additional equipment varies by the situation. The standard duty uniform includes boots, a cargo jacket, and fatigue trousers, though strictly speaking out of combat or duties deemed hazardous only the boots and skinsuit are required by regulations and it is common to "go pantless" by ditching the fatigue trousers (depending on an individual's sense of modesty), particularly among mechwarriors, pilots, and naval crew. Infantry in a combat zone combine the skinsuit with a full set of heavy tactical armor, and all models of skinsuit can be sealed (along with a helmet) against hazardous environments or hard vacuum.
Skinsuits have also proven popular on the civilian market with spacers, participants in hazardous sports such as the racing or dueling circuits, or those who simply like the look or are into the Techpunk subculture. Civillian skinsuits often feature bright or varied colors, "greebles" that are included purely for asthetics, and, unless they are manufactured by firms specifically catering to those who have a practical need for it, weaker and/or thinner materials that are unlikely to provide any of the protection of a military grade skinsuit. While a professional duelist or spacer will want their suit to live up to its repuation, others consider the fashion to be more important than the functionality.

*Skinsuit (Tech base: F; Introduced:3055; $5000 (standard), $7,000(vehicular or naval))
AV: 3/3/4/2 (Torso, Arms, Legs, Hands, Feet); 2 kg (standard) 4 kg (vehicular or naval)
Does not count for stacking when combined with other armor; Can seal against vacuum and hostile environments with helmet attached (48 hour life support); Vehicular suit includes integrated cooling system and can integrate with Bastion Neurohelmet; Naval suit includes connections for additional external air supply (add 96 hours to life support duration but counts as standard armor for stacking purposes when external air supply is equipped); all models include HC satchel battery.
TW: increase total damage divisor of equipped armor by 1 in the same manner as the dermal armor or belter infantry augmentation. Stacks with those augmentations.

*Helmet (Tech base: E; Introduced: 2825; $1200)
AV: 5/6/6/3 (head); 2kg; may be sealed (with skinsuit, 48 hour air supply); Includes military comm, IR scanner, night vision, electronic compass, and range finder; requires HC micro power pack or power from skinsuit (3 pph); +1 to perception rolls, AV 10 vs flash

*Bastion Neurohelmet: (Tech base: F; Introduced: 2950; $5000)
AV: 3/4/4/3 (head); 4 kg; may be sealed (with vehicular skinsuit, 48 hour air supply); Includes military comm; requires HC micro power pack or power from skinsuit (1 pph); AV 10 vs Flash; +1 to piloting (mech or aerofighter) skill rolls, unit gains the affects of the multitrack design quirk.
TW: As per the SLDF Advanced Neurohelmet, save that there is no chance of neurohelmet degradation.

*Tactical Armor: (Tech base: E; Introduced: 2825; $4000/100)
AV: 4/6/5/4 (Torso, Arms, Legs); 6 kg; +1 STR (Carrying/Encumbrance only)
TW: provides a damage divisor of 2

*Boots: (Tech base: C; $50/10)
AV: 2/3/3/3 (feet); 2 kg

*Cargo Jacket: (Tech base: C; Introduced: 2825; $200/10)
AV: 3/4/4/3 (torso, arms); 0.5 kg; +1 STR (Carrying/Encumbrance only)
TW: provides a damage divisor of 1

*Fatigue Trousers: (Tech base: C; Introduced 2825; $200/10)
AV: 3/4/4/3 (legs); 0.5 kg

-----

*Civilian "Fashion" Skinsuit (Tech base: C; Introduced: 3055; $200-$1000)
AV: 1/1/1/1 (torso, arms, legs, hands, feet); 1 kg; may not cover all listed locations depending on style of suit; Does not count for stacking when combined with other armor
*Civilian "Carbonan" Skinsuit (Tech base: E; Introduced: 3055; $800)
AV: 2/2/2/2 (torso, arms, legs, hands, feet); 1 kg; may not provide protection to hands or feet depending on style of suit; does not count for stacking when combined with other armor
*Civilian "Heavy Duty" Skinsuit (Tech base E; Introduced: 3055; $4000
AV: 3/3/3/2 (Torso, Arms, Legs, Hands, Feet); 4 kg; Does not count for stacking when combined with other armor; Can seal against vacuum and hostile environments with helmet attached (48 hour life support); includes connections for additional external air supply (add 96 hours to life support duration but counts as standard armor for stacking purposes when external air supply is equipped); includes HC satchel battery.
*Civilian skinsuit helmet (Tech base C; Introduced 3055; $100 (standard) $200 (sealed)
3/4/4/3 (head); 2 kg; Sealed model of helmet may be sealed against vacuum or hostile environment when combined with civilian heavy duty or military skinsuit; standard model has connection point to install a civilian grade communicator (not included); sealed model includes military grade communicator

Good news is the lab boys say the symptoms of asbestos poisoning show an immediate latency of 44.6 years. So if you're thirty or over you're laughing. Worst case scenario you miss out on a few rounds of canasta, plus you've forwarded the cause of science by three centuries. I punch those numbers into my calculator, it makes a happy face.

I'd probably give more life support duration to the skin suit since the standard ASF combat flight suit is basically a skin suit and gives 48 hours life support when sealed.

Huh. For some reason I missed that when I was researching. Yeah. I'll tweak it.

EDIT: So edited. The basic and vehicular suits now have 48 hours of life support. The naval version can last up to 144 hours with the external air supply.

EDIT 2: Also threw in stats for the civilian "fashion" version of the skin suit worn by those who want the look but don't care about the practical benefits.

Unless I understand the rules incorrectly, stacking your Skin Suit and Tactical Armor with the Belter Infantry Augmentation could get you to an Armor Divisor of FIVE without a movement penalty.  Please check my math...

It should "only" be four. 2 for the infantry armor, +1 for the skinsuit, +1 more for the belter augmentation.

I see 7/9/9/6 stacking the armor, which gets you three.  Then +1 for the Belter Augmentation... which means I was rounding the wrong way.  You are correct sir!

For the civilian skinsuit, I am now thinking of Evangelion's plugsuits, just without the medical monitoring and resuscitation gear.

That would probably be a good comparison to some styles of civilian skinsuits, complete with the "vacuum sealing" feature to make them skintight.

So I made an update to the first post.

This clarified that the civilian "fashion" skinsuit can still be stacked with other armors, and adds two additional types of civilian skinsuits, the "carbonan" and "heavy duty models"

The carbonan model includes a thin layer of Carbonantm fabric (an AirWeavetm innovation!) that is stab and tear resistant. Not really combat ready, but good for reducing road rash if you happen to be a bike rider.

The heavy duty model is primarily intended for civilian spacers, and it's basically identical to military's naval skinsuit except it lacks the additional layer that makes the military suit more energy resistant.

I also added a helmet.

EDIT: Also I changed the thread name. The next bit of AToW gear I'll probably be posting is civilian vehicles. At some point I'm also going to take the rough notes I wrote for Bastion medical SCIENCE!!! and turn them into proper equipment entries as well.

*Carbonan reinforced clothing (Tech Base: E; Introduced: 2980; add $200 to the base cost of the modified clothing per location protected)
Ever since the introduction of CarbonanTM fabric (manufactured from a weave of carbon-nanotube threads combined with other advanced materials) to the civilian market in the late 30th century, there has been a small but persistent demand for civilian clothing that has been reinforced with this "wonder material", primarily because of its considerable durability and resistance to wear (not to mention the status of being able to afford a carbonan wardrobe) rather than its protective qualities. Those protective qualities can't be completely ignored, however, and security guards or underworld toughs can produce an effective and concealable bit of protection by wearing carbonan reinforced clothing over a similarly reinforced civilian skinsuit or concealed armor.
(AV: 1/2/2/1, protects the same location the article of clothing covers. Does not add to weight, visually indistinguishable from standard fabric. Carbonan reinforced clothing can stack with standard armor as easily as regular clothing)

*Improved Armor (Tech Base: E; Introduced 2975; doubles the cost of standard armor and armor patches)
Incorporating carbonan and other advanced materials developed for standard issue military uniforms into civilian grade standard and concealed armors provides a small boost to their protective capacity. This is most commonly seen with security specialists wearing low profile armor, where the actual protective value of the armor is more important than the deterrence value of being seen wearing it.
(Available in flak, ablative, and Ab/Flak varieties in both standard and concealable types. This modification increases the melee, ballistic, and energy armor values of these armors by 1, but does not modify the weight of the armor. This is not available as a modification of existing armor. Instead it is available only as a complete armor piece.)

Civilian Vehicles

Like any advanced, industrialized nation, the Bastion has a whole host of civilian vehicles available to its populace, and the widespread access to mass transit hasn't done much to sate the demand for means of personal conveyance, from cheap scooters or economical family cars to blisteringly fast racing cycles or the thrill of a personal flight rig, the options are as endless as a consumer's pocketbook.
Despite the (apparently) common legend in the Inner Sphere that every Terran car was fusion powered, the standard power source of choice for civilian vehicles in the Bastion are simple electric batteries. These batteries provide sufficient performance and operating range for most day to day use, and can quickly, cheaply, and easily be recharged virtually anywhere in an urban population center. Vehicles intended for performance rather than economy might instead use a fuel cell powerplant, though the day to day use of these vehicles is heavily restricted by the availability of cracking stations in their neighborhoods, limiting their appeal more to the sporting side of civilian travel.
Despite its prestige, fusion power has little value relative to its cost for small civilian vehicles. High end luxury cars might be fusion powered purely as a status symbol, but for the civilian market, fusion power can only be considered ubiquitous for large vehicles or atmospheric aircraft, where the ability to operate long term without refueling is particularly valuable. Rural communities still developing, families in areas where blackouts might regularly occur, or those who are enamored with fuel cell powerplants but don't want to pay at the pump of a cracking station might also make use of portable fusion generators.
Easily the least common form of vehicular power generation on the worlds of the Bastion is the petrochemical based engine, limited to only a few ancient vehicles kept more as historical artifacts or cherished family heirlooms. Even civilian aircraft almost exclusively use either battery or fusion power linked to one or more propellers than the hydrocarbon burning engines more familiar to those in the Inner Sphere.

Small Wheeled Vehicles
While the thick atmosphere of Martin's Landing tends to favor hovercraft, wheeled vehicles remain the most common choice for civilian vehicles for the majority of the Bastion's population. From the humble scooters that are many a student's first form of personal conveyance, through the more exciting monocycles (or fully enclosed three wheeled sporters more popular in the aggressively rainy climate of New Seattle), to the more practical roadsters or family cars, these vehicles are a common sight on urban and suburban streets moving around those who prefer not to take advantage of mass transit or simply enjoy operating their own vehicles. They share the roads with vans and trucks moving around cargo or doing more utilitarian work, and even in the Bastion's many outposts and colonies on airless worlds or moons, environmentally sealed HEUVs form an important part of local transport infrastructure.
A particularly rare site are the handful of classic vehicles that were originally brought to the Bastion with the first wave of colonists. These cherished heirlooms can go for hundreds of thousands of dollars to a collector, however strict emission laws put into place since the colonial period mean owners require special permits to actually operate these vehicles, and even in this case this is limited to designated areas or tracks, and often only specially designated events. Also, with no convenient source of fuel for petrochemical engines, owners usually have to resort to brewing their own at a much increased cost. To keep one of these vehicles in full working order is nothing short of a labor of love by someone with very deep pockets.
Larger civilian wheeled vehicles serve almost entirely in an infrastructure role, moving commuters and cargo throughout urban areas and beyond, or aiding in construction or emergency response.

Hover Vehicles
Hover vehicles fill essentially the same niche as wheeled vehicles in civilian use, and are particularly attractive on Martin's Landing because of the inherent performance boost in the world's thick atmosphere. However, their generally higher cost and the perception that they are harder to operate has kept them from really competing with more conventional wheeled vehicles or other means of transportation in most roles.

Author note: I made a small retcon to the wheeled vehicle section. This changed the heavy truck so that it is slightly slower but able to carry ten tons of cargo. This was done so that it could also reasonably carry a standard cargo container. I also added a fusion powered version

10-ton capacity makes sense.  It's interesting that once you throw fusion into the mix, the difference between wheels and hover goes down so much!

VTOL Vehicles
Some futurists in the Bastion have predicted many times in the past that VTOLs would eventually completely replace conventional wheeled or hover vehicles. While this clearly didn't happen, nor can it be realistically expected to happen in the future, it can't be denied that VTOLs are a versatile and also reasonably affordable means of transportation, and they are particularly popular even for ordinary civilian hobbyists on Martin's Landing (less so on the Colony worlds). Of course, the average citizen can't simply walk into the local dealership and zip out on their new personal flight rig. The licenses to own and operate these vehicles still require a hefty bit of classwork, practical training, and official certification of ability, and the costs for all that training can run higher than the sticker price of a new pilot's first personal VTOL. Despite this restriction, the skies of Martin's Landing can still get a bit crowded by commercial and private VTOLs, along with the police craft up there to monitor the skylanes and the cities below them.

I'm surprised fusion doesn't enter the conversation until the VERY high end...

Fusion engines aren't as efficient (in terms of mass) on smaller civilian vehicles, because they always weigh at least 250 kilograms. So for family cars and the like, they're either going to have to either be bigger or give up something.

Also, in the Bastion's specific case, recharging a battery powered vehicle in an urban area is basically free. So unless you need to go far or run a long time, or want the prestige of a fusion powered car, battery power is just more economical.
