Seibert's Sack of Hammers

Seibert's Sack of Hammers
Reinforced Construction Battalion

CO: Lt. Col. Karl Seibert
XO: Major Ingrid Jung

The Hammers are an oddity in the mercenary trade.  Where other commands focus on destroying objectives, the Hammers focus on rebuilding them.  A quintessential support unit, the Hammers almost always operate in support of a larger collection of units.

Commander

Karl Seibert is a minor noble from the Lyran Alliance's Bolan Province.  Tired of the aristocratic life, a young Karl Seibert ran away from home under an assumed name.  Free of the obligations of the nobility, he followed his love of architecture and studied construction management at a lowly trade school before serving out his military obligation in a Lyran combat engineering unit.
Sickened by the treatment of commoners by noble-borne officers, Seibert setout to change the situation by forming his own mercenary command.  While his natural leadership made recruiting a simple proposition, the need for funds required Karl to drop his assumed identity in order to generate funding.  This put him back on his family's radar, and there is now a reward for his safe return home.  After a botched kidnapping attempt on Galatea, the Hammers now insist that Seibert always be accompanied by at least a squad to discourage opportunistic bounty hunters.

Organization

Line
While the Hammers are trained combat engineers; the unit is a construction battalion rather than an engineering battalion.  This emphasis on construction entails a higher amount of manpower and thus the Hammer's organization reflects this.  This organization means that while the Hammers are listed as a battalion, they are actually a reinforced infantry regiment.

Each of the Hammers' line platoons is comprised of four 10 man squads which gives a platoon that fields twice the strength of a traditional Combat Engineering platoon.  Like all combat engineers, the Hammers' infantry are of at least Veteran quality.  Each squad is split into two five man fire teams led by a corporal.  Squads one through three are transported in CE versions of heavy APC's that exchange a third of their cargo space for a front-mounted bulldozer.  Each fire team in Fourth Squad is transported in a Multi-Purpose Engineer Vehicle.  It should be noted that line platoons drive their own vehicles rather than relying on separate crews.

The Hammers field three construction companies (2nd through 4th); each comprised of 6 platoons plus a 10 man command squad of Elite quality.  Nominally, each command squad is split between two flatbed trucks (TRO 3060) that carry the company's building supplies, but in reality the Company command squad typically operates from one of the CE-APC's in order to free up the flatbeds for resupply runs.  Each Company is based out of one of the three Hercules transports that are the result of Seibert's noble connections.

HQ

In addition to their three line companies, the Hammers sport a HQ company (1st) that is actually a reinforced battalion.  Besides command, this company houses the Battalion's logistic, maintenance and recovery elements as well as a cadre of engineering experts from various disciplines.

First platoon is comprised is Lt. Col. Siebert's command unit, while 2nd Platoon is Major Jung's.  Each is mounted in battered Daimyo command vans.  While the first through third squads of both HQ platoons are traditional CE's, fourth squad is comprised entirely of professional construction engineers with specializations such as architecture, pipeline design and road building.

Third platoon is the Battalion's medical platoon which operates out of a brand new MIT 23 MASH unit.  The platoon is comprised of four squads each headed by a doctor and two physicians assistants.  Typically a squad is deployed with each company while the MASH is manned fulltime by the Hammer's Chief Surgeon and two experienced nurses.  In addition, the Hammers pay a premium to any soldier willing to achieve the equivalent of MRBC certification as a combat medic and almost all fire teams sport a medic.  One medic from each platoon is rotated to the MASH on a biweekly basis in order to further their training as well as provide extra medical support.

Fourth platoon is the battalion’s transport assets and is comprised of a lance of flatbed trucks and a platoon of Heavy Hauler exo-skeletons.  While organizational separate, the battalion’s squadron of orbital lighters and  Mule effectively serve as extensions of fourth platoon.

Fifth platoon is the battalion's recovery team and is comprised of four battlemech recovery vehicles escorted by four brand new Hyena Salvage Mechs.  Siebert recently purchased a lance of Oppies for fifth platoon, but these were liberated from Blakist hands with extreme prejudice, and it is likely to be several months before the Hammers have them operational.

Sixth and Seventh Platoons are the battalion's maintenance staff.  Sixth specializes in working on the battalion's tracks while Seventh has squads specializing in mech and exo-skeleton maintenance.

Eighth platoon is a lance of Crosscut Industrial mechs for use in heavily forested areas, while Ninth platoon is a lance of Dig Lords for trenching and mining jobs.  First Company is capped by Tenth platoon which is comprised of four Carbine Construction mechs which provide roving support to the line companies.

First Company is transported by the Mule-class James Porteous and the modified Overlord-class Ben Moreell.

Overview:

The Omni-vehicles greatest strength has always been its ability to be customized for a given role.  In the two decades
since omni-technology came to the Inner Sphere, numerous custom configurations have emerged to address the needs of
various combat situations, but only recently has that flexibility been used to modify a a combat vehicle to serve in a
non-combat role.  While not the first unit to modify a combat vehcile for another mission, the mercenary command Seibert's
Sack of Hammers earned the distinction of doing so with such a hideously expensive vehicle as the Manteuffel which the
Hammers acquired after a mercenary Manteuffel company was orphaned from its original command.

The Hammers' Combat Engineering configuration is designed with an eye towards bunker-busting and the breaching of enemy
fieldworks.  Towards that end, Seibert's Manteuffels mount a massive Definace Industries Thunder autocannon as a
demoliotion howitzer.  Supporting this large gun is the Manteuffel's B's ubiquitous Series 1 small laser.  Enhancing the
combat engineering role are a bulldozer blade and a rear-mounted lift hoist.  While the lift hoist is intended to help
Seibert's engineers, the unhappy Manteuffel crews typically keep their combat pods slung to it in the hopes that in an
emergency situation, they'd have time to reconfigure their tanks for combat.

MPEV [50 ton tracked Multi-Purpose Engineering Vehicle]

--------------------------------------------------------

The Multi-Purpose Engineering Vehicle (MPEV), is the "Swiss Army Knife" of choice for military engineers.
Far too expensive and under-specialized to see common commercial use, the MPEV nonetheless sees wide
deployment in the militaries of the Inner Sphere because it can passably fill the roles of five to ten
more specialized construction vehicles.

While the MPEV suffers from the old addage that a jack of all trades is master of none, the designers went
to considerable effort to minimize the inherent inefficencies of the MPEV's multi-role nature.  This effort is
best showcased by the MPEV's suprisingly complex bulldozer blade.  The blade is actually comprised of two
seperate sections.  The lower section in capable of independent operation with a fine enough degree of control
to allow it to operate as a grader blade.  Both sections of the blade are also articulated so that the MPEV may
serve as a scraper.  In this configuration, the lower blade section tilts back to send earth into the MPEV's dump
bed via a throat built into the undercarriage while the upper blade serves as the dump bed's forward gate.

However, this multi-role optimization didn't work everytime.  The rear of the MPEV mounts a a large multi-purpose roller.  This system is based around a smooth drum road roller to which can be fitted sleeves that tranform the roller into either a mine sweeper or sheep's foot tamper.  The large size of the roller prevented the designers from extending the track guards to cover the lower rear section of the tracks.  This means that when minesweeping, the roller can potentially fling a mine directly into a track.  Though in actual use this scenario has happened so rarely as to be considered a freak occurance, most commanders are unwilling to risk the potential damage to an MPEV if an actual purpose-built minesweeper is avaliable.

The utility of the MPEV doesn't cease at the end of the workday.  While the decision to use a fusion plant was
made to remove logisitcal issues associated with fuel, the decision allowed the MPEV to serve in two other roles.
First, the MPEV sports a fairly elaborate external power distribution block that allows the MPEV to provide power
for a fair sized encampment The second advantage of the fusion plant is the MPEV's ability to use its excess
power to purify water via the fluid transport system.

Overview:

A common variant of the venerable APC chassis, the Combat Engineering modification involves little more
than mounting a bulldozer in the front of the vehicle and exchanging seats for equipment tie down points in
the troop bay.  While capable of carrying a full CE platoon, most units will instead mount a single CE squad
and utilize the remaining tonnage for the sundry supplies most combat engineers haul around.
