Here's a unit I came up with to play in a solo campaign:

2nd Chancers
 
Unit History:

   In the early months of 3025, the Federated Suns conducted a deep raid against the Draconis Combine with the 1st Ceti Hussars RCT to test Kuritan military responsiveness and disrupt leave rotations for Wolf’s Dragoons.  An Ting and Igualada were the primary target worlds.  Major Seth Baxter was a battalion commander in the Regimental Combat Team’s BattleMech regiment.

   During the raid on Igualada, Major Baxter’s battalion was tasked to hold in place an opposite battalion of the 21st Galedon Regulars while another Hussar ‘Mech battalion dropped behind it.  During the operation Baxter was informed that a pirate raid on his landhold on the Davion world Andalusia had killed his wife and 13 year old son.  Distraught, Major Baxter marched his Thunderbolt out into the open plain that separated his battalion from the Kuritan one.  In full view of both sides, he broadcasted a challenge to the Kuritan MechWarriors to fight him in single combat until his ‘Mech fell.  The enemy took up the challenge and Major Baxter defeated three Kuritan BattleMechs before his ‘Mech collapsed with a shattered right leg. 

   When the 21st Galedon battalion then began to advance to take possession of the salvage and capture Major Baxter, his battalion attacked to prevent this.  However, the second 1st Ceti Hussars battalion in orbit, confused by what had occurred on the surface, aborted its drop behind the Galedon Regulars, allowing the opportunity to trap the Kuritans slip away.  The 21st Galedon Regulars withdrew upon realizing their exposed position, leaving the field to Major Baxter’s unit.

   In the aftermath of the operation, the 1st Ceti Hussars command determined that Major Baxter was no longer fit for duty and relieved him of his command.  Baxter left the RCT headquarters world of Emporia accompanied by Sergeant-Major Jorge Lynch; a retainer of Baxter’s who piloted a Wolverine owned by the Major.  However, instead of returning directly to Andalusia, Baxter and Lynch traveled to Le Blanc, a world known as a mercenary hiring center. 

   There they put together an irregular BattleMech company, including an independent trader with a beat up, old Scout class jumpship.  The MechWarriors and other personnel that had accepted employment in Baxter’s unit was a motley bunch of misfits, cashiered soldiers, failed academy cadets and petty criminals of varying experience.  Major Baxter was open about his intentions to his new unit.  He would discover the identity and location of the pirate band that had killed his family and together they would destroy it.  Since the unit represented a second chance for most of its members, it was named the 2nd Chancers.
