The Charger is a wonderful mech.....as a basis to make something better.  Various variants of the Charger along with countless personal mods and not to forget the Hatamoto series.  Took a roomy chassis design, swap the engine and have fun!  It is an extremely versatile chassis....  Heavy scout to full on assault....
yes, the original was a serious disappointment.  I could see it being used as a punishment...  screw up too much, you get assigned a 1A1.  If you survive long enough, you get something a little better.
If at first you don't succeed, make it worth the repairman's time!

Im glad the Challenger variant was made. Im kinda surprised that they've not been seen more often during their time.  I wish the 3050 Revised TRO didn't include a ER Large Laser version of it.

The CGR-1A1 is actually one of my favorite SW mechs - sure, it looks stupid on pen and paper, but when you change your mindset, it becomes amazing: the only relevant parts of the Charger are the head, CT, and legs; anything else is just a damage sponge (with a little critseeking ability). The Charger is not a mech; it's a pair of legs hooked to a reactor and cockpit. Rush head-on into the enemy and don't stop kicking.

It helps that I have experienced a consistent pattern in Battletech: the worse the mech on pen and paper, the luckier it is in the field. I've never once fielded a Fafnir without losing it to failed PSRs, either from firing the HGauss unbraced, taking damage and critting the cockpit or rifles in the fall, or a couple times even falling into double-basements head-first. The Charger, on the other hand, just keeps soaking damage and kicking away with impunity. Once, my Charger had probably lost more than half its armor when it came across a pristine Annihilator. It charged and kicked the thing to death despite every AC/10 connecting every round - it just refused to die. The only Charger I've ever lost sacrificed itself by drawing the fire of two whole lances for several repeated rounds, and still legged multiple targets in the process.

I guess that's one thing people don't appreciate about the -1A1--it is a zombie.  A very low-firepower one, but a zombie nonetheless.

Oh my...suddenly I have this image of a horde (and I really mean a HORDE) of -1A1s rushing an oncoming force in a wave attack, like the Army of the Dead on _Game of Thrones_ ...

That actually sounds like a fun scenario. Defender gets any one mech of their choice, with a veteran pilot. Attacker walks one regular Charger on the board every turn. How many can you kill? >:D

There was rule someone was using where if the Mech isn't able to do more than 5 points damage, it's was in forced withdrawal. Question was raised if the Charger was automatically in withdrawal.  Which makes it really flawed rule! Though it' explain why Chargers in canon lasted for centuries.  ;D

There's a specific exception for units that cannot do that much ranged damage even when undamaged. Such units by definition don't care.

And you give the Chargers the ability to sprint and still make physical attacks if they end up next to a defending 'Mech.  >:D

(I was picturing a wall of Chargers actually, barrelling at top speed towards the defenders' lines...)

I'd go up against that.

Provided I was able to put down a dozen or so 30 point vibromine fields.

I just got the mental image of a Charger with no legs hurtling cockpit-first against the ground at 81kmph. I wonder how much/far it would bounce.

The 1st thing any pilot assigned to a 1A1 should be asking is to strip out  four small lasers for a pair of medium.

Seem like a pretty minor modification to me that should be standard on all 1A1. Its still not much fire power for an assault
mech , but it certainly allot more practical then the small lasers!

Ironically, the 1A1 would probably be pretty interesting in the HBS game, given that support weapons (which Small Lasers are classified under) automatically fire after a melee attack. No-one is gonna enjoy an Assault Mech moving that fast into melee range, which should help remind people what Tabletop rules the 1A1 was originally designed to take advantage of (CHARGE!).

Yes, the Riever.

My take is that the Draconis Combine didn't understand how heatsinks actually worked until some time around 3055.

They still do not understand CASE then . . .

Yes, the Combine's stubborn insistence on packing a mech full of exploding pieces then refusing to install CASE is peculiar.

You jest, but you know there's something to that :D

The Banzai is a strongpoint-storming mech par excellance.  Barring WMDs, there's no mech better suited to storming a bottleneck.

I can totally see CASE-less deathtraps being deliberately designed with similar missions in mind.  "You can stand your ground and deliver until someone reaches you and goes all MY LIFE FOR THE DRAGON on you, or you can abandon your position to our side!"

While it may embrace the samurai's spirit, It's a trade I will make all day long in a campaign. The banzai runs over 33 million...  at a 4 to 1 price point I can do a heck of a charger rush for that price... And if I can a use the CGR-2A2 or the CGR-KMZ Charger, I know I'm taking the other guy with me.

I like the original 1A1 as a great distraction mech to run forward to kick things but has nothing explosive in it so its harder to kill.

The SB is a great variant in L1 era & probably my favorite over all.

The C variant of the basic 3050 model is also a favorite because Jump-5 + MPLs + C3Slave is never a bad thing.

I don't have any experience with the KMZ model but it looks interesting.

The 1L model I only use in our annual X-Mas White Elephant game where its just mean to give that one to someone   >:D

I've never yet been disappointed by the inclusion of a -1A1; either it does nothing, but take shots and be hilarious, or it kills something (anything!) and it's suddenly paid back it's entire BV, though probably not in C-bills. My favourite kill was a full eight-hex charge through a Jenner which was completely cored, and left me having to make a PSR to avoid falling on the floor laughing like an idiot...

(It also helps my regular opponent loves AC/20s, so there's little risk of any long-range fire slowing the Charger down!)

The Charger 1A5 has AC/20, two SRM-6, and medium laser in place of the small lasers.  It also has a smaller engine.  The SA5 has a light fusion engine so squeezes in MASC and extra medium lasers.

But the Lu Wei Bing is pretty obviously supposed to be a Capellan Victor, no?  Has the same movement profile (including jump), and even the design of the head.

it certainly looks like an MWO victor. despite physical appearance, it was designed more as a replacement for the Yu Huang (lines destroyed 3068) and Lao Hu (Shengali Arms lost to FS in the Victoria War). it was like the kid who had to do a project at the last minute and just copied the first picture they saw

I remember the conversation after 3145 Capellan Confederation was released.  The writer who'd designed it said it was supposed to be a Yu Huang replacement and everyone else said it was obviously a Victor, and he said "oh, now I see that."

:'(  It was a Yu Huang replacement, which is why the weapons were selected the way they were.  Capellan Victors were Stealth-armored Gauss 'mechs at that point.
