Vel Harasser
« on: 01 February 2019, 16:19:16 »
A next generation hover tank the Vel (named after a Hindu God's javelin) is fast, well armed and a danger to anything it can run down.  The design can trace itself back to the Lightning hover tank of the SLDF but the Val is lighter at 25 tons if somewhat slower at 'only' 136kph.
But its armament is formidable with a pair of medium pulse lasers and SRM-6's mounted in the remote controlled turret.  The turret is directed by the Vel's gunner who directs the weapons with a system not unlike those found on Aerospace fighters.  Where the gunner turns their head, the turret will follow, making targetting far easier whilst moving at high speed.
For additional manouverability and control the Val is dotted with pop-up airbreaks which can deploy in a heartbeat, making it able to turn at very high speed.

A worthy clan tech conversion of the Lightning. Great work  I always thought that the Lightning should've gotten a turret from the start, because it makes using its weapons and speed much easier. I already tested it in MegaMek vs some heavier armor (two Demolishers escorted by three Scorpions vs six Vels) and I destroyed all enemies while only losing one Vel. The Scorpions actually did more damage to the Vels than the Demolishers.

Also, I played around with the Chassis a little bit and created a LRM configuration with ER Medium Lasers instead of Pulsers and an Artemis-guided LRM-15 launcher. The ER Small Laser is replaced by two Light Machine Guns for some anti infantry work. They worked pretty well as an support unit for the standard Vels in my second test.

Yes, I did three 1 on 1 matches against a Manticore. The Nerio won two fights and lost one time because the Manticore scored a lucky hit. But the other two times it won pretty easily.

Looks like to great hover for rushing in and backstabbing.

I think that a good harasser alt-config would be ER Large Laser, TC, and 1/2 ton of something else.
