Design Request for Corvettes-Little Boys This Way!
« on: 05 April 2024, 18:56:48 »
So I asked a while back for a mothership or fleet-tender type vessel to supply a bunch of corvettes on mission.  Not a lot of replies to that-so how about some of the actual corvettes to pair with it?

Some ideas for corvette roles I will award virtual cookies for:

  • Patrol Corvette: Long duration patrols, low ammo consumption, Search and Rescue capability, and ample crew quarters and recreation spaces for those six-month patrols for smugglers or pirates.  Options for light industrial or asteroid mining equipment are appreciated.
  • Point Defense Corvette: Do you see that fighter squadron?  That inbound missile wave?  No, you don't.  Anti-capital weapons can take a break, we're here to swat flies.
  • Strike Corvette: Heavily armed, reasonably fast, ready to make any opponent a drifting wreck bleeding air.  Very little space for anything else.  Skews short-ranged.  Prefer kinetic or nuclear weapons for this role.
  • BEAMbt: Enough armor plate on the nose to tank it's own firepower without thresholding, and a potent NPPC battery in the nose.  Enough engines to get to and from the battlespace, emphasis on long-range bracketed fire as support.
  • Assault Carrier: A carrier that is designed to follow it's fighters in and keep close to them, offering the umbrella of it's ECM and it's weapons to protect them as long as possible, then recover them quickly.  High speed is a must-have.
*Insert support for fashionable faction of the week here*

Laramie Patrol Corvette

Novastar NPPC Corvette

Hornet Light Carrier

Darkstar Assault Corvette

Gaucho Point Defense Corvette

These are all reasonably good suggestions-I'm not sure if the Guancho is fully PDed up to an actual 'immune zone' against say,  or if it can reliably kill a squadron of incoming Aerospace fighters in a single turn if they keep out of the Ultra AC zones, but it's pretty good for it's job.  But, there is one exception where I think you might have missed the brief.  The BEAMbt concept is first and foremost, tanky enough to resist it's own firepower in the nose.  The Novastar, meanwhile, has only 81 forward armor, instead of the 241 needed to fully protect it's nose against even it's fully bracketed firepower-which, you know what, I'm willing to grant you that.  Still, I don't think it adequately fulfills the design brief of "Enough armor plate on the nose to tank it's own firepower without thresholding, and a potent NPPC battery in the nose.  Enough engines to get to and from the battlespace, emphasis on long-range bracketed fire as support."  Still, you earn four E-cookies for good designs and a special commendation for the Darkstar which is just about the platonic ideal of a strike corvette.  If you let that little shit get in amongst anything, it will reap it's dues.

(Side note: the BEAMbt concept comes from a non-Battletech game with a hard-ish scifi air, where one player figured out that she could build about 16 corvette yards for every 1 capital ship yard, and decided this was the most 'action-efficient' way to expand the military.  One Electron Beam, enough tungsten to STOP an electron beam dead on the nose in a shadow-shield that protects all the rest of the ship, and no armor anywhere else.  It has a glacis it points at the enemy, but a half-meter of tungsten is the MINIMUM armor needed to defend against it's gun, so it's very long and skinny, and has potent jink-drives to keep it pointed end-on.  It's actual deltaV is bad though.  Thus far, the GM has refused to let her actually put an ultra-reletavistic electron beam on a corvette.)

A favorite of mine for a little bit of everything Corvette.

CRV-2000 Flower Class-Alternate
Mass: 100,000 tons
Use: Escort and Patrol

Aw, it's a little cutie!  And yea, a bit of everything, probably a reasonablish patrol corvette.  Not quit well suited to any assault role when any capital laser can threshold it from any angle but the nukes are a bit of bite and keep the old SL vessels honest.

I'm glad you are pleased Vehrec, these posts are good for the occasional burst of MegaMek inspiration. I too was pretty proud of how much firepower the Darkstar could generate in such a small package (for a short time at least).

I don't know where you are getting 251, even up close the NovaStar can only do 116 cap max with its NPPCs (or 46 at full bracket). Up close that's a lot to expect a Corvette to endure as it makes even my larger Frigates worry. At the more likely medium to long ranges the nose can take it but the quarterdecks will suffer. Although I supposed you could reshape the armor to add 36 to the nose and some more to the forward quarterdecks at the cost of the aft ones.

Like I said, immunity to it's own guns is my goal with the concept-and I include Threshold Crits in that.  Since the forward HNPPC bay can generate a 24 point capital hit when fully bracketed down, that's the goal to be immune to thresholds from.  And since the original design it's inspired by is such a weirdo, only the nose facing need be so armored-if you point any other part of the ship at the enemy, the idea goes, you deserve the results.

White Dwarf NPPC Corvette
Mass: 240,000 tons
Battle Value: 62,938
Cost: 6,423,432,000 C-bills
Safe Thrust: 4
Maximum Thrust: 6
Cargo
    Bay 1:  Cargo (930.0 tons)     4 Doors
Armor

    Aft Sides: 81/81
    Aft: 81
Structural Integrity: 120
Crew:  24 officers, 69 enlisted/non-rated, 51 gunners

Background - There are few Corvettes that can boast the ability to withstand fire as much as the White Dwarf which is built and armored more like a Frigate at the cost of firepower and patrol endurance. That said these vessels still have no trouble finding volunteers willing to crew them and as long as the nose can remain pointed toward the enemy its weak backside is not a hinderance.

Sooo, I feel like that is a LOT of different corvettes
More than any single faction would likely have.  LOL.
That said.....

    • Patrol Corvette: Long duration patrols, low ammo consumption, Search and Rescue capability, and ample crew quarters and recreation spaces for those six-month patrols for smugglers or pirates. [/b]
    • Point Defense Corvette: Do you see that fighter squadron?  That inbound missile wave?  No, you don't.  Anti-capital weapons can take a break, we're here to swat flies.
    [/b]
    • Strike Corvette: Heavily armed, reasonably fast, ready to make any opponent a drifting wreck bleeding air.  Very little space for anything else.  Skews short-ranged.  Prefer kinetic or nuclear weapons for this role.
    • Assault Carrier: A carrier that is designed to follow it's fighters in and keep close to them, offering the umbrella of it's ECM and it's weapons to protect them as long as possible, then recover them quickly.  High speed is a must-have.

For the most part, these 4, can probably be combined into a single platform "generalist" w/ optimized features.

    • Options for light industrial or asteroid mining equipment are appreciated.
    • BEAMbt: Enough armor plate on the nose to tank it's own firepower without thresholding, and a potent NPPC battery in the nose.  Enough engines to get to and from the battlespace, emphasis on long-range bracketed fire as support.

Meanwhile there are these 2 that I have concerns about.

    1.  What defines "Light Idustrial & Mining Equipment" exactly?
Cargo space?  Docking Collars?  Mech Bays?  Shuttle Bays?

    2.  A Potent NPPC Battery & Enough Armor to tank it's own firepower w/o thresholding are..... Impossible?
I could be wrong, maybe its possible, but I feel like the math is impossible.  10% can threshold right?
A pair of Heavy NPPC is 30 points cap damage so 300 cap armor on a corvette?
And that seems fairly light for "Potent NPPC Battery".  Even for a Corvette.

For the point defense role, I've got this. The regiment's worth of ARTS fighter bays are for launching a swarm of cheap light interceptors like the Trident or Sabre, but it might also fit into the Assault Carrier role?

While I do agree with Hellraiser I think that many Corvettes (which the SLDF classified as <250kt) could be worth it if that is all your industry can support or politicians can stomach. Maybe his faction just has a small procurement budget and urgent need for new ships rather than saving up for a larger more capable generalist Frigate or Cruiser, or they can only fit so much within the cageworks (which would otherwise be making jumpships) without major investment that might take it offline for an extended period. They are also not bad for supplemental works although far from optimal for general use.

That said I find the design constraints interesting and thus cannot resist the temptation to at least attempt to make them happen as best I can.

    Toucan Patrol Corvette

The Toucan Corvette is built with long deployments in mind. Thus, crew comfort was a priority during its design: all crew members (including assigned marines,  ASF and Smallcraft personnel) are provided with spacious cabins. Two large grav decks allow for ample space for the Toucan's crew and any passengers. One highlight is the 50 by 4 meter swimming pool fitted in the recreational area. Select sections of the grav decks (like the extensive medical facilities) can be rotated by 90 degrees, so they remain fully usable when the ship operates under thrust. Ample cargo space allows for a large supply of frozen and refrigerated food, plenty of supplies of all kinds and enough fuel to support the corvette and any assigned DropShips for extensive periods of time.

Its weaponry is geared towards combating smaller vessels: four quad turrets of 10cm 'sub-capital' laser and 4 double turrets of 45cm naval-class laser along its flanks form the main part of the Toucan's firepower. Supplemented by two Barracuda and one White Shark missile launcher and a total of 48 large pulse laser it is clear that the Toucan is meant to steer clear of anything larger than it self. Protection is provided by 127 tons of advanced lamellor ferro-carbide armor and a deep network and laser anti-missile systems, that can shield the ship even from volleys of naval missiles.

Perhaps the Toucan's most unusual feature is the 12,000 ton-rated pressurized repair bay located in its 'beak'. Large enough to service most types of civilian and military DropShips, it hints at the secondary role of the class - to allow for salvage and SAR missions. For this purpose the ship is fitted with 20 cabins reserved for technical personnel and emergency quarters for up to 40 rescued spacers. Ample medical facilities and a larger than usual kitchen staff are meant to provide the care and support needed for any vessels in need of assistance.

Sooo, I feel like that is a LOT of different corvettes
More than any single faction would likely have.  LOL.
    That said.....

For the most part, these 4, can probably be combined into a single platform "generalist" w/ optimized features.
An Optomized Carrier/Patrol/Strike/PD corvette would be quite impressive, if you can do all four jobs on one hull.  I do think the patrol characteristics (ammo-free weapons, long patrol times, etc) will conflict with the other three a bit more heavily than you think, but good luck with making one!

Well, light industrial and mining equipment is pretty vauge, but I'm willing to accept anything that is sensible.  Mining mechs, cargo bays for ore or machinery, extra crew quarters for work-gangs to shovel gravel-pile asteroids apart...
2 is a tall order, but I'm willing to let you sacrifice virtually anything and I'm only judging the nose arc-nothing else matters for armor, you can have a tinfoil shell over all five other facings.  Getting 601 points of armor on the nose is also overkill (though appreciated), since I'm willing to offer points for reaching the other Mckenna-duelling breakpoints of 24, 36, and 48 capital damage, so all the bracketing settings can be represented.

Liam's Ghost, the Romanova class is a fearsome PD boat against anything that wanders into it's arcs of fire (960 standard damage if you can get all three broadside large laser batteries on target!  That's plenty to melt entire clan stars with!) and it's naval C3 system and Lithium-fusion battery give it pride of place alongside the larger ships in a fleet.  Gorgon, I love the look of the Toucan, especially the idea of it's nose being this hollow beak that opens and snaps shut again around a stricken dropship.  While it's absolute cargo fraction is low, that 12000 ton pressurized repair bay and the other little extras really put it over the top.

Glad you like it. I could also see the Toucan working as the center of a pocket warship / carrier dropship squadron.

Out of curiosity, what kind of cargo % would you have deemed enough? Because I was struggling to even break past 10% on a ship so small  :cheesy:

I did post the White Dwarf above for the Beambt that can beat a threashold of 24 but only in the nose and it cost that ship dearly.

You're right, I forgot to commentate on the White Dwarf.  It's probably a good implementation of the concept, if not a pure one in terms of armor distribution, since only a third of it's armor is laid into the nose-arc :P.  It might also cost less or have some spare weight budget if it dropped some speed-which, yes, is bad for a corvette, but if you really wanted to...

Note: That's my attempt at shoehorning both the requirement for the carrier and strike corvette into one hull of less than 250k tons. There are a lot of compromises in this one I'm not super happy about - I would have liked for it to be faster or carry heavier guns, for example. But after much fiddling and re-drafting, I think it's the best I can do right now. And anyway, if it would be easy, it wouldn't be a challenge.
