A Warrant in the Tau Ceti Rangers, Marko Ramius guarded his units dropships and bases for his first entire career, seeing combat in the family Urbanmech several times. In the aftermath of Operation Guerrero he was offered a choice, assignment to a more modern mech or retirement to a militia posting. He stomped his urbanmech off in fury amid mutterings that he'd show them, he'd show them all!!

During the first battle of Sian the defenders were treated to a remarkable sight - an urbanmech, stripped of it's weapons, making jumps unprecedented for the class and performing death from above attacks until is legs broke off. In the aftermath a bemused Chancellor Laio ordered the mech repaired and offered the elderly Ramius a place among the capital's defenders. The winged Urbanmech acquitted itself well in the second battle of Sian, although Ramius's daughter declined to exchange her assigned mech for it following her father's death.

If you just move the ammunition to less stupid critical slots, you make a few canon designs playable again.

There are dozens of designs that ammunition sitting alone in a side torso or with one or two other items. This is suicide.

TIL that for the oldest designs, this was because *all* the heat sinks were on the crit charts.  That rule change introduced some Achilles heels for sure.

I need an acronym that can mean two things. To the military it means "refit units to be better able to fight at range." To the corporation involved it means "pork-barrelling"

I've got a couple Marik units getting light gauss. Which isn't an efficient weapon, but has EPIC range for an inner sphere gun.

The idea is that the FWL gets worried about its militias getting into scraps with units (Including "pirates" and actual pirates) that have significant range advantages. They tender suggestion for easy refits, only for the manufacturer of their shiny new LGR to co-opt the program.

So yeah, if anyone can come up with the acronym, thanks.

Now I'm trying to figure out a civil war era Laio design. Since their special ability is stealth armor, it's hard to do it in a way that both makes sense and doesn't break the 'spirit' of the mech.

That's actually why I don't want to keep him, I'm trying to stay away from optimized designs. Besides, building for the jihad is easy, making a (semi) viable stealth mech with SHS is hard.

D stands for davion. Stealth is a laio toy. They start with their own version (Non-extant) or the base.

To be clear, the 1SH turns off the stealth when it gets close; the stealth is there so it can get to that point. Also, it has 11 sinks.

As the Jihad raged on, assault mechs became rarer and rarer, and units looked for replacements. Even at that point basic Longbows were plentiful – while new construction consisted of advanced materials since the initial Clan invasion, there had never been a widespread upgrade program, and the mech had among the safest of battlefield roles. There was basically nothing that could be done with a 0W, but an upgrade to the 7Q was arrived at independently many times. Sometimes called the Greatbow, the sheer short range firepower was a disagreeable surprise to many those hoping to run under the range of the LRMs.

Sometimes light FF armor was added, other times medium lasers sacrificed for ammo or CASE; in most cases, it was simply a matter of substituting 50 LRM launcherss for 38 MML tubes and five tons of ammo.

A simple one would take the old JVN-10N Javelin and replace the SRM-6 racks with MML-5 racks.  That's it.  Easy refit.  Fun part is that the MUL shows the 10N was used by the Inner Sphere, mercenary and Periphery units up through 3100.

Javelin is already getting an upgrade - the light horse are replacing a SRM rack with a narc pod. Given that MML mechs are plentiful and narc rare, you'll have a bit of a time arguing me into using that one.

But yeah, yours isn't a bad upgrade. Almost as much short range kick and a decent ability to peck away at range.

Rearmed with with salvage from destroyed WOBbie mechs, the Zeus Ram proved adept at hitting the holes made by their principal’s heavy gauss.

Ultimately, the battle that cost Perer’s Fafnir its left Gauss ended a family line that had served the Lyrans for a quarter millennia.

it's a bit light on RAC ammo, but the SHS mean you have to be light on the trigger anyway.

Glad you like it. I figure that there would be a ton of un-upgraded jagermechs around, as the official upgrade(s) are engine swaps to XLs. I figure, fedcom civil war, causing a bunch of mobility checks is just as important as massive damage numbers.

The Triphammer was the personal mech of a minor mercenary who joined the broadsword legion shortly after its founding, and managed to rise to the rank of captain in fairly short order. The means by which he managed to convince the Word to allow him access to an iNarc are unknown, but but he was undeniably effective in utilizing it, always seeming to have the right pods in the ammo bins. Both pilot and mech were killed by Stacy Church herself during the occupation of Outreach.

Triphammer has a rather unique distinction – it is a single heat sink mech armed with advanced energy weapons that nevertheless manages to be over-sinked in most brackets.

Well, how about this?  The Hermes II hasn't been covered yet.

Invasion era, I can see the AC/5 being removed for an ER Large Laser and 4 more heat sinks.  A somewhat desperate update against Clan OmniMechs and Elementals put out by the Combine.

Civil War era, the upgrade kit goes a slightly different route, with the Word of Blake offering to upgrade any Marik militia Hermes II by switching out the weapons for a std. Large Laser (RT), ER Medium Laser (RA), Narc Missile Beacon with 1 ton ammo (LT), and a TAG in the place of the removed flamer.  This is a support variant for drawing down missiles and Arrow IV homing shots.

Jihad era, this one is found in the Magistracy of Canopus.  Replace the AC with a Light version (RT) with 2 tons of ammo with CASE (LT), upgrade the medium laser to a pulse version (RA), and add in a Rocket Launcher 10 in the left torso.  Keeps the flamer for use against Word infantry and battle armor.

Early Republic era, the enterprising mercenary might be tempted by a loadout including a medium pulse laser (RA), MML 7 (RT) with 2 tons of ammo (LT), 2 light machine guns with array (LA) with a half ton of ammo (LT), protected by CASE (LT).

Does that count?

The First drop the Medium Laser for a Heatsink and upgrade the Large Laser into an ER-Large Laser. Both change the SRM 6 into the ammunition effective dual SSRM2. (the first might be even a field refit)
The second sacrifice the M-Las and swaps the armor from 10.5t Standard to 9.5t Ferro Fibrous (if it was Class D...

Longbow bodyguard/Anti-Elemental unit: Trades the LRM-5s for SRM-4s, one ton of SRM ammo, and a medium laser. Alternatively drop the medium laser for another ton of SRM ammo (infernos, fragmentation, whatever).

Probably not as useful for the FWL, but the AFFC would enjoy it quite a bit I think.

Here's a Longbow variant that could be exported to the Draconis Combine. In my mind StarCorps sends the assembled skeleton/chassis to DCMS without MRMs, but includes instructions on how to install them into the arm mounts.

Another model exported to the Combine, this Longbow refit echos the Panther's weapon load. A PPC is mounted in each arm, while an SRM 4 is mounted in each torso. A small laser is mounted in the head. Pilots still need to pay attention to the heat gauge because it's possible to overwhelm the 22 single sinks. (The FWL doesn't have PPCs, but the DCMS never had any problem getting them. Like the MRM-packing model above, StarCorps could simply send this semi-completed frame to the Combine with everything except the PPCs in place.)

Funny you should mention the longbow, I was almost done one. I based it off the -7q, because the 0W has an armour/firepower ratio where LRM boat is one of the few things that make sense.

OK, the light gauss one was kinda neat, but even there it just can't survive in a world with clan er large. It's too much firepower big a target in a package with too little armour.
