In a previous life, this ruling was made on the boards:

This was asked of me by a fellow Agent and I thought I would come the to experts.  Can a pilot that has been KO's attempt to make shut down rolls based on the heat scale.  Thanks.

They cannot. Shutdown rolls require pilot intervention to perform.

Does the same apply to ammunition explosions from excessive heat?

There is no pilot intervention for ammo explosions. Pilot awake or not, the ammo will decide to explode all on its own, based on the heat of the unit.

If the pilot is knocked out, at least he won't feel anything.
